The news is not the headlines, it’s the ABC figures

303

Why the disbelief that a Tom Boyd comment on Celtic TV on Saturday is still occupying news inches on Tuesday?  Tom did not indulge in profanity or prejudice; he merely made a partisan comment on an in-house broadcast channel.  But here’s the thing, he did so on a quiet news day.

Had Celtic lost to Dunfermline on Saturday, Tom’s profound musings would never have been reported, the 24-hour news cycle would have been filled by more important matters.

The football news industry, of which we are all consumers, requires stories, even when nothing of note happens.  The pressures of being a staff reporter at a media outlet, which is perpetually downsizing, when your job is to deliver a story people want to read and there is just no story to tell, should be clear to understand.

This is not justification for throwing Tom under the ink barrel, but it should temper our engagement with the process.  For reasons that escape my memory right now, we do not have a game tonight or tomorrow, so we might have to wait until Thursday before Ever-Green-TB gets a break.

Until then, the news is not the headlines; it’s the ABC circulation figures, which are again heavy with red ink.  The Record, which sold over 500k copies per day when CQN started 15 years ago, shipped 110k last month, a 78% fall in unit sales, the same is true elsewhere.  This is why Tom Boyd became a multi-day story.  It could be anyone tomorrow.

  1. BSR @ 9:26 PM,

Well, my feeling is there is something amiss at Parkhead.

Lenny is all over the place.

Hibs had a great start to last season under Lenny then imploded.

He needs a special type of support, if Celtic PLC are going to place him as manager knowing the history, they have an extra duty of care towards him.

Hanging BR out to dry was one thing, he got done over and came out swinging, he got put on his ass.

    Doing that to Lenny!?

    That’s a different ball game.

    But here’s where I am.

After BR went, I said to SFtBs let’s see where we are in June.

Knowing so many players were leaving and wouldn’t be replaced.

He argued we should wait until the transfer window has ended.

I said fair enough (we did have a huge opportunity to rebuild).

So for me that’s where we are. I’ll be making a huge apology to SFtB at the end of the window or not.

As we are already, unnecessarily out of the UCL, even if things go swimmingly from now to then my apology won’t be abject.

It gives me no pleasure being the”cynic”, far from it.

Yet as I’ve said many a times, my expectations have been managed.

I’m going to have a great day at the old firm derby.

Win, lose or draw I’ll be having a blast in good company.

I’ve seen the light and done with my soul searching in this regard.

    Hail Hail

  2. That was murder.

How one of these teams put us out,and we were fearful of the other is baffling.

If anything Cluj done all the pressing 2nd half, but irrespective who goes through I doubt they will achieve a single point.

  3. glendalystonsils on

Look on the bright side…..one of those two teams will take our hammerings for us that we would have got in the CL groups-)))

  4. After watching that tonight I’m convinced that Slavia were there for the taking. Had we won last week we would have been buoyant and up for the tie. Celtic Park would have been sold out and bouncing, but we are where we are with a team that appears to have lost its way and no chance of a sell out (apart from the Board) on Thursday – over to you Mr Lawwell.

  5. Go tell the Spartim on

I know we all want to vent our spleen, rightly so and principally towards PL

But he doesn’t give a flying ….. what you and I think, is thus and always was thus.

As Jim Royal would say “Celtic supporter my arse”

  6. GreeninbingleyinOslo on

Just watched that. Two third-rate sides.

Depressing to think that one of those teams put us out, and we were fatalistic about playing the other one.

    Cluj and Slavia. Christ almighty.

Despite Lenny making a cant of it against Cluj it would be almost impossible to legislate for the individual errors made.

  8. Pog

Definitely no chance of a sell out ( well not in the way we mean !) but, having looked at the seats sold graphic, I would say the attendance will be close to 50,000.

    Goodnight,

On the plus side we now know how crap we really are on the European stage and it’s a wake up call alright. If the likes of Cluj can defeat us over a two leg tie any of the top six in Scotland can beat us on their day.

A boot in the baws isn’t pleasant but if it stops der Hun from pulling a fast one it will all be worth it. I’d sacrifice European success any day of the week as long as it means keeping our foot on their scum squirming throat.

  10. Generally not a fan of loans but would take Ibe, Armstrong and Benkovic. We could really do with Armstrong’s drive and experience. I know he is not perfect but you know what your getting. Add Meling and one other right back and we will be ok until January. A host of players should be loaned out, Ralston, Morgan, Miller and Kouassi.

  11. Choose Life, Choose Celtic…………..

As someone else said earlier – I’m all in, gladly.

I hope we do the 9, then the 10. We’ll enjoy it, they’ll combust and we’ll have laid a historical marker for those that come after us and on behalf of those who came before us.

    HH to all Tims.

  12. Getting close to the ole quotes…

‘We tried right up to the last minute…..’

‘Transfers are more difficult than ever before..’

    ‘Agents working against us…”

    ‘Fax machine f##’

‘Campbell is on the phone to….’

They picked him, and told us it was no contest whether they’re behind him, or hiding behind him

only time will tell, the sale of KT was inevitable, but the money received should not be portrayed as

needed to keep the lights on after CL exit.

Hello again all you young rebels.

Lots of negativity on most Celtic blogs at the moment and just like myself

who’s normally a happy clapper i can understand a lot of it.

Why we keep undermining our chances in any competition by a lack of

investment, action, good forward planning etc. i cannot fathom.

Spoke to one of our coaches last night at training, a big Celtic man with twin

bhoys who both wear the hoops, he’s heading back home to the U.K as his

wife can’t settle, so i said ” never mind you’ll be able to watch the Celtic ”

His reply ” Wouldn’t give them the money ”

Now regardless of whether you think a Celtic man should talk like that it’s

a sign of a general discontent amongst the support about recent inaction.

They need to take heed and god help them if they don’t speak up in support

of Tom Boyd with this campaign of hate from the usual vitriolic scources.

    The natives are extremely restless.

“So we are being sold an aspiration rather than a commitment.

It is a play with words that resonates more with a English grammar student than an ordinary Celtic supporter”

I don’t know what a “play with words” is but the difference in using the phrase “aim to improve” and “will improve” is a real and meaningful difference; they are not interchangeable. It is the difference between a wish and a guarantee.

As I said- Hang PL (and anyone else) for what they did do or say but don’t hang them for a mis-quote or a false memory. That’s not fair.

  16. Chairbhoy

    You are not alone.

Nobody has the patience to wait till the end of the window to evaluate where we are. Many, many posters were stating we will just sell and we’ll not buy anyone.

And those posts are still there today. We bought a Ligue 1 CB for £7m and a LB from Austrian football, who was wanted by his coach, for a couple of million and a Dud Duhan Dud (who actually looks a reasonable addition to the squad). We now dismiss this spend because they aren’t looking very good or good enough.

I, too, have said that those posters who said they only wanted a moderate spend, would be clamouring for another go if the player, bought at the moderate spend, turned out to be a bit of a dud.

We have only had these players a matter of weeks and we are clamouring for their replacements. I think we need to give them time and see if they can be useful as a CB and a wing back (Mbombo does not convince as a LB and I’d prefer Hayes at the moment).

Having said that, I still expect signings because we are obviously short of numbers at the back. We have plenty of midfielders, 3 strikers (plus reserves), and 2 adequate keepers.

My worry is that we will buy Scottish next, having been criticised for buying dud foreigners recently, and that McKenna plus Taylor will cost almost as much together as Julien and Mbombo, and will prove just as unpromising.

When the new players are bought, all those who said we were not going to buy anybody will forget they said it and will wait a few weeks to change the criticism from “Just buy someone!” to “Buy better players!”.

All of this is driven by the understandable disappointment and anger at our needless dismissal from the CL. Buying players, whilst necessary, will not lift this gloom.

The only factor that will change it, gradually, is winning matches. Starting with achieving Europa qualification (whether Sevco make it or not) and starting to beat all Our Scottish rivals and develop an, even more, healthy position in the Scottish League Table.

    Nothing else will do it.

  17. SFTB

We have signed 3 players and lost around a dozen. It is nowhere close to being acceptable.

We have spent 12M and brought in 25M despite having by far the most money in our history.

Madmitch was ridiculed by happy clappers for suggesting we would have a 4M surplus. The view was Celtic would be spending some of the vast reserves. Good to see your leading the backtracking just in case.

Your constant pro board posts are pathetic, just like the people you keep sticking up for.

    Spin it all you want.

Tierney is our best player, Boyata and Lustig both played over 30 games, Benkovic nearly 30 games.

Only in August you could say Julien has missed a chunk, Bolingoli and Hatem have missed games, your point is??

  21. KT wasn’t even in our top 3 players, he missed most of last season

I’m saying that out of the dozen only 4 players were potential first picks and each of them had injury problems and missed chunks of last season. Ironically Lustig was the fittest of the bunch :O)

My point was that last season’s winning team isn’t that weakened by the dozen players you mentioned leaving.

  22. The Huddle

Problem is last seasons team although winning a treble needed strengthened.

So far with two weeks left we are weaker.

KT was Celtics best player, regardless of last season.

  23. KT has never been Celtic’s best player, he might’ve gone onto be but he never reached that level.

Of course last season’s team needs strengthening, just don’t need scare mongering about us losing 12 players when our first 11 hasn’t weakened by much.

But yes, that first 11 needs to be better

The reason fans are so low just now is that the driver has been asleep at the wheel.

Knowing what we now know of how poor Congerton was/is – is a reflection of our club without a plan or scrutiny of its ongoing operation.

My thoughts return to the same thing – think where we’d be if these things had been fixed and expidited with clinical professionalism?
