The ‘next game’ being all important is seldom true

Celtic have the best squad in Scotland, so with a hugely important League Cup semi-final ahead on Saturday, we should rest as many players as possible for tonight’s game against St Mirren.

St Mirren are a point above bottom-placed St Johnstone and in a clutch of five clubs within two points of the automatic relegation spot.  St Johnstone are only team they have scored against in their last five outings.

If the plan is give Ryan Christie the chance to reprise his League Cup semi-final exploits of last season, he should be rested in favour of Tom Rogic, who needs as much game time as he can get anyway.

Christopher Jullien played through an illness on Sunday, he too should be rested, Nir Bitton is more than capable of filling in.  This could also be the game for Greg Taylor to make his Celtic debut, allowing Boli Bolingoli to catch his breath.

Odsonne Edouard is one booking away from a Europa League suspension, so there is a reasonable chance we will start one of the later games in the group with Bayo in attack.  If this is in the post for the young Ivorian, let’s start him tonight.  I know football managers like to talk about the ‘next game’ being all important, but this is seldom true.

Clearly points mean prizes and as experience tells us, we’ll need to keep winning and score as many as possible. Lest we forget……………….. The ither mob will be helped above and beyond the kall of duty.

The accumulation of dodgy decisions will become hidden in plain sight.

The 9th and the 10th are priceless.

A footballing sage, I think it was Kevin Keegan, once declared that; “You cannot choose the trophies you win”.

Never a truer word said but alas not appreciated on this fine blog, where many apparently believe otherwise.

Tant Pis! Lenny surely knows better, he should by now. Not so much Choose Life, but choose a team capable of getting the right result. The most important thing right now is three points against St Mirren, let’s achieve that first.

We definitely don’t want there to be a trophy winning celebration in Sevconia this season (ever in fact) so to that extent the League Cup is vital, 2 games to win it – maybe we should prioritise. Can you imagine the hullaballoo that would accompany a sevco trophy win – think triumphalism reborn – why shouldn’t they have a victory parade thru the streets of Glasgow to announce that they’re back – yip thats what we would be up against.

Seen your post last night to one of our more inconsistent contributors – another well said mate!

  10. No game is a certainty, a Red Card, a biased Ref, 10 men behind the ball , inspired Keeper etc etc. Over the years we have all seen frustrating games where we have dominated but just couldn’t put the ball in the net.

St. Mirren have played 10 games so they have played all the other teams bar us and have only conceded 9 goals. That is less than 1 goal per gamr.

So an automatic goal fest is far from guaranteed.

The priority tonight is win 3 points, if we start knocking a few in all the better but for the moment it is just win the game, Saturday will take care of itself.

Delighted that James Forrest has signed a new contract. At the peak of his career & in the form of his life, he has earned it.

Its great to be a Celt!!

  12. i’m getting the impression that some on here don’t realise the enormity of us winning 9 and then 10 league titles , this should be our only priority , the rest is secondary.

  13. Ron, Winning the League is always the priority every year. There is absolutely no point in even talking or thinking about 10 in a row.

Our priority is winning this year’s League & that’s it.

  14. The advantages to having a big squad is that you have options when your best players players pick up injuries

Otherwise why break up a team in form?

Minimum changes tonight please, players love playing matches, if they are tired taper the training accordingly

    B-)

  15. UEFA fines are now a complete farce. They are becoming the norm rather than the exception for competing teams.

If we want Parkhead to be non atmospheric and soulless then fine, if not we must factor fines into the ticket pricing.

    HH to all and COYBIG.

PS : Still can’t find a regular competitor in UEFA competitions that hasn’t been disciplined.

  16. I suggest that we just try to win every domestic game. That will probably get us another treble. Hope to see some of you at CQN Corner pre match

“St. Mirren have played 10 games so they have played all the other teams bar us and have only conceded 9 goals. That is less than 1 goal per”

Below the sevvies there are no teams that are actually scoring goals. 3rd & 4th have a goal difference of +1 & the rest have a negative GD.

Personally I would like to see the strongest team possible for a league game as goals could be important this season. Any mass changes I would prefer in the league cup

  18. UEFA and SFA corrupt as feck

    Who cares what they think?

Let’s get tonight’s game won and keep momentum going.

  20. Great news about James Forrest. One of my favourite players at Celtic Park. Is it just me or is there something brilliant about shouting ‘Jamesie!’?

  21. CELTIC: Forster; Bauer, Jullien, Ajer, Taylor; Brown, McGregor, Christie, Elyounoussi, Forrest; Edouard.

Subs: Gordon, Elhamed, Bitton, Hayes, Morgan, Ntcham, Rogic

  22. Obviously I don’t know if any of you caught PM (the programme not the Westmonster Honeyminister) on Radio 4 tonight, so there was a wee segment from 44 minutes in that may interest you if any of the following apply :

You have an antipathy to orange walks ( anywhere will do but Glasgow Specifically)

You don’t have an antipathy to orange walks and you feel that they are the highlight of the year

You believe that they are anti-catholic

You don’t believe they are anti-catholic

You like Jeannette Findlay etc etc

Anyway here’s the link to the programme. Just move the time slot to 44minutes.

  23. Morgan in the subs no Sinclair.?

Very Happy with that team. A case could be made for the tricky skills of Frimpong if The Buddies are parking the bus but great to see Bauer & Taylor start.
