The not-so-new reality

390

A few points you can take to the bookies without losing your money:

If Joey Barton bet on the Barcelona-Celtic game odds of this being his first offence this season will be around 100/1. This ‘news’ has leaked at a time of choosing, not days after the practice started.

Joey Barton is a self-certified rule breaker, but if his induction process didn’t cover SFA rules about betting on football, a large portion of responsibility on this issue lies with his employer. And it’s not their first offence. I know many of the faces at Ibrox haven’t changed since the old days, but rules are not there to be ignored.

It’s palpably farcical to suggest anyone other than a died-in-the-wool fan wouldn’t “prefer to come to Celtic” than go to Newco Rangers, and even then, Scott Allan jumped at the chance to pull on the hoops. We could take our pick of anyone from Murray Park, or a supporters’ bus on its way to Ibrox, for that matter.

The world has changed. No one would pay attention to a St Johnstone player who said he rejected Celtic to go to Perth, claims that Joey did likewise are equally fanciful.  Welcome to the not-so-new reality.

  1. Very very sad that some on here slagging off PL for his remarks about Joey.

Definitely a sign of something, but I am at a loss to know exactly what.

    Pathetic.

the guardian article uses ‘the old firm’ and discusses ‘rangers’like it’s not up the creek without paddle – hardly covering itself in journalistic glory

Gross misconduct isn’t in the eye of the beholder. It’s in the eyes of the law.

Equally,I think that TrifCo need to be very sure of their ground here.

  5. Honestly I find it amazing that the very same people who constantly criticise Celtic and PL for not speaking up when the media put the boot in, are now slaughtering PL for publicly rubbishing reports that Celtic tried to snatch Joey Barton from under Rangers’ noses.

I’m glad I have to go out or I might drown in the sea of hypocrisy.

PL doesn’t often react to hunspeak unless it’s something outlandish. Even then , he reacts with an ironic humour, such as his ‘another galaxy’ beaut.

    No harm in it.

PL was quite correct to give his recollection of events, others are equally entitled to ask why he hasn’t commented on other aspects. As they have asked before.

Far more importantly, things are getting interesting at Celtic.

The company’s been accumulating cash for 4 years now, firstly paying down debt, then increasing liquidity.

At end June 2015, Celtic had net £4M cash in the bank, and £18M due received from trade and other debtors. Despite what was a very poor year trade-wise, we’ve got more liquid assets than a year ago.

Now, factor in a couple of things:

    1) Increased revenue from domestic match attendances – season book sales. Add £6M to turnover.

    2) UEFA Champions League – Add £20M to turnover (comparitive to EL)

    3) Pre-season International Champions tourney – add £5M to turnover

While there are of course costs incurred in these events, the margin is in the order of 90%. You can drop £28M to cash from this.

Between June 2015 and June 2016, we’ve got a bigger wage bill given the summer signings, some netting off of player purchases and sales, and we’ve got a January transfer window to plan, fund and execute.

I’d say we’ll see more departures than arrivals in January, lots of peripheral first teamers punted, and if we’re lucky, Brendan will land one or two significant targets. Let’s call it a £5M net spend window, for the sake of this wee ramble. Gross wages will be unaffected.

What you’re (we’re) looking at come June is up to £50M of liquidity in the business.

That is, were Celtic so inclined, there’s that sum of money in the business to invest in a ‘project’ without resort to debt.

What’s this project? Does it even exist? Was this done solely to provide a buffer against an emerging Sevco XI?

What’s clear is that this position has been arrived at in a planned manner. It comes as no surprise, and indeed, is probably a little disappointing to the Board as they might have expected an additional UCL group stage windfall in the period.

Think about that: There will be virtually a whole year’s operational costs covered by the liquidity in the business.

And it’s been planned for. Why?

Answers on a postcard to the usual address.

Entirely unrelated, both the Chairrman and the CEO specifically referenced “seeking to improve the football environment in which the Club operates” in their statements issued with the accounts, explicitly European football.

“The Club continues to work with clubs and all those involved in football governance to identify means in which to improve the game in Europe.”

Indeed, the CEO stated: “The Board and I have that objective as a priority. We continue to work tirelessly on seeking to improve the football environment in which the Club operates.”

Taken at face value, the Board’s priority is European-level change in the environment in which Celtic plays. Note: Environment. Not competition.

A changed environment, and entirely unrelatedly, £50M to hand.

If the BBC have gone to the trouble of contacting Lawwell then it’s definitely game up for Barton.

Normally they would be reveling in something like this. Probably put on a 3 hour special about how “Rangers” got one over on Celtic.

  14. On the subject of the turnaround by Scottish journos re: St. Joey of Barton, I found this comment by Richard Wilson at the end of his – ahem! – “analysis” of the situation to be so telling :

The finances are very interesting in light of the cash that will be earned this season. You raise a good question, why are we stockpiling cash? What is the rainy day/opportunity our board has their eye on?

Ernie thinks it could be to get through the lower leagues of Englandshire. That’s an idea.

Are we about to splash cash for the next few transfer windows to make absolutely certain we have consistent and consecutive CL group stage participation? I have been banging on about the importance of that in terms of coefficient, profile and not getting “left behind”. Imagine the balance sheet in 3 years time if we achieved CL group stage qualification 3 years running. Would we continue to stockpile cash?

That’s just a wild guess. I can believe either scenario…I could believe other credible suggestions…but I really don’t know. As you say, interesting.

For all my criticism of PL over the years,I’ve always congratulated his stewardship of the Plc.

My problems have always been with how those results have been achieved-IMO at the expense of the football operation.

IIRC,the original plan under Fergus was that they were to be a symbiotic relationship. Success on the pitch would lead to improvement in income via ticket sales, matchday footfall/spend,sponsorship and TV

This would enable the Plc to generate the sums to fund further improvement on the pitch leading to further improvement on the above.

That cycle was broken, then discarded. To the extent that the football operation clearly funded the Plc.

Now you tell us that soon the Plc will be cash-rich to the extent of c£50m. Well, bloody marvellous.

    And I mean that.

I just wonder where we would be if Celtic had broken the habits of a lifetime and built on a decent team instead of breaking it up to suit the needs of a Plc worst-case scenario.

For the avoidance of doubt, planning should take into account worst-case scenario. It should only ever be used as a last resort,i.e. firefighting.

The thing is, there is no real way to make absolutely certain of CL qualification playing ties over two legs unless you are spending Arsenal or Man City level wages. You’re essentially playing two cup finals in which the break of a ball or a bad refereeing decision can cost you dearly. We have won five league titles in a row because the margin for error over 38 games is reduced but we haven’t exactly mopped up domestic cups, despite being heavy favourites in almost every competition.

    So I don’t think its that…

Good analysis. Who’d huv thunk that a football board could be wise enough to build up cash reserves and liquidity for a future project, eh?

It’s an interesting concept and it will be interesting to see how the next couple of seasons pan out in terms of how the CL progress and accompanying revenue is used.
