The not-so-new reality

390

A few points you can take to the bookies without losing your money:

If Joey Barton bet on the Barcelona-Celtic game odds of this being his first offence this season will be around 100/1. This ‘news’ has leaked at a time of choosing, not days after the practice started.

Joey Barton is a self-certified rule breaker, but if his induction process didn’t cover SFA rules about betting on football, a large portion of responsibility on this issue lies with his employer. And it’s not their first offence. I know many of the faces at Ibrox haven’t changed since the old days, but rules are not there to be ignored.

It’s palpably farcical to suggest anyone other than a died-in-the-wool fan wouldn’t “prefer to come to Celtic” than go to Newco Rangers, and even then, Scott Allan jumped at the chance to pull on the hoops. We could take our pick of anyone from Murray Park, or a supporters’ bus on its way to Ibrox, for that matter.

The world has changed. No one would pay attention to a St Johnstone player who said he rejected Celtic to go to Perth, claims that Joey did likewise are equally fanciful.  Welcome to the not-so-new reality.

  3. So it would appear the lad Windass has had the mantle of greatness slung on him.

BT have just spoke gushingly about him.

Yep, u guessed it, he gets injured in the warm up!!lol

Could the joke of a zombie club give us any more laughs?

  4. BLANTYREKEV

Hapoel Be’er Sheva last week scored twice without reply away to Inter Milan.

They also scored twice at Celtic Park, but conceded 5. Their players admitted that the atmosphere in Glasgow got to them.

How does an accountant figure out the value of that!?

The away fans get a restricted view area and frankly a pretty poor match day experience. Aberdeen recently asked for additional tickets and were refused.

We could reduce the cost of tickets for away fans (excluding THEM) and thus encourage more to attend, thus improving the atmosphere. We could maybe include the Twenty’s Plenty idea from the Affiliation for away fans, this helping our own away support.

The new club would sell more than the 7000 they are allocated, should we decide to give them more. Certainly you could raise that to 10,000 if you were an accountant!

We have around 50,000 season ticket holders. Brendan is planning on improving the team year on year so we should be back to the MON levels over the next four or five years.

During this time Ten in a Row fever will build as it usually does. That puts bums on seats too.

Something could (should) be done to assist our Irish supporters who have been neglected in recent years and inconvenienced by TV scheduling and so on. You used to hear many more Irish voices around the ground than you do now, I think.

Celtic Park has achieved an atmosphere for being THE Champions League venue of choice. There are companies who sell these ‘Once in a Lifetime’ Experiences across the World and they could purchase blocks of seats in advance and sell on to their clients – so we could become a Tourist Destination. There would be considerable interest in this, given a regular run in the Champions League and an improving team.

At the moment Celtic don’t have the space for this on the night’s there is a market for it because the 60,000 seats go.

On lower attendance games like tomorrow’s – surely the top tiers remain closed and we can have a lower tier atmosphere. For the Morton game last year we were in the top tier and it was 90% empty.

Finally if Celtic Park improves on what it already has – the biggest point of difference we have alongside the fading memory of former Champions – then we have a reason to be kept at the top table.

  5. Ah the magical 28,000 and 37,000.

I can’t speak for 1980 as I was gallivanting around the globe, but at one time the attendance was based on clicks on the turnstile. This of course didn’t take in to account the lift overs, jump overs, priests gate, manager’s gate and Kelly’s gate.

Watergate learnt a lot from the east end of glasgow. :)

Of course when I was wee there were two other motivations for those figures (although the lack of imagination was a weakness in the transparency claims). First was the tax return. Bigger gates, bigger liability.

Second was the 50/50 split with the away team. Smaller gate = smaller weight of brown paper bag handed over to the opponents.

As for putting another level on the main stand. Over my dead body.

I get my season card for 104 because it is there that the occasional blast of summer and autumnal sunshine gives me my vitamin D for the year. Mess with my fitness routine at your peril.

    Hail Hail

Sevco are favourites to win at Pittodrie?

    ———

They do have two days more recovery time than Aberdeen. Not sure that would make enough of a difference to get the win. Might go with a draw if I was a betting man!

    Burgh,

the story from the SMSM is what is giving me the most laughs.

QOS – 7 straight victories including scoring 13 goals in their last 3 games.

2nd Rangers last 7 games – DLDWWWD (includes league cup games. Last 3 games they have scored 2 goals.

I can see a cup shock tonight. It might take Queens to extra time to win the tie.

  8. Winnings there is something disconcerting about your post. It’s all about revenue and not about the club. A bit like the board.

But perhaps I am the Luddite.

We should at least drop the old more than a club nonsense if we are in fact now less than a club?

  9. On Saturday I did a small obligement for CQN’r Alisdair MacLean and his son

in return he made a very generous donation to our favourite charity Mary’s Meals.

Thank you Al was a pleasure to meet you both.HH

  11. As ?long aslawell and co get all the freebies on match days ,the main stand will never get upgraded,we just have to do with the dookits, that give us the rotten pies ,in the front stand, talk about taking the single fish, lawell and treat us real Celtic with contempt,

  12. People need to understand that bookies prices are determined by the level of bets being placed. If more money is being placed on Rangers than Aberdeen, Rangers are favourites. It doesn’t necessarily mean the bookies starting point is Rangers to win.

  13. Many Thanks, to Embra & Newrad for the Heads Up re Benalmadena Celtic Bars, I will make one or the other of them tomorrow night.

Blanytrekev outlined the rationale an accountant would employ in looking at this.

I was seeking to put the financial reasons to this fictional accountant.

Even then I think supporting our away support via Twenty’s Plenty and support for the Irish fans coming over to Celtic Park are worthy of praise and not criticism.

FERGUS went from 0 to 60 in a few years. How hard is it for this soon to be £80m club to go from 60 to 80 and maybe as a result £100m club. Or is that a better point for the accountant?

  15. Aberdeen could play Sevco an hour after their match finishes on Thursday and still win comfortably. The Sevco are awful. Really awful.

  16. Interesting reading about the finances of the club and ideas on how to improve it. I remember the days when Rangers(dec) had tons of coverage in the Record after signing a Nike and Coca Cola deal whilst on the same day we were getting second hand light bulbs from the old Hampden floodlights. That was the first time I really thought that we might never win the league again.

Aye,we could have done all that stuff you mention from 2012. Damn right.

Obviously the plan was to scunner the punters to the extent that they effed off in droves so that we could rebuild the main stand to bring the capacity to three times the average attendance.

They got it half right. Fair play.

    AULDTAM

That’s not quite true in the case of advanced odds, such as football.

Especially as there are only three outcomes.

If you check overround in a horse race,130% is not unusual. Many more outcomes.

150% is common in a dog race-6 traps at 4/1 will do that.

    Football-106-112% is the norm.

The bookies anticipate the weight of betting in certain cases. They cannot leave themselves open to a deluge on a ‘name’

They’d rather deal wi a trickle.

    Esp wi accumulators.

Even now, people will pick the lowest prices on the coupon in an acca and spout the mantra…

‘Ffs,nae wunner ye canny get a coupon up!’

Hence also the expression-he went doon like a Settirday coopin.

Though that might be only in Kilwinning.

Only watching this Hun game because I’m giving my tropical tank it’s once a year deep clean. No cutting edge to the Hun, think only one shot on target resulting in the goal.

Fish returned to the tank guppies going mental, may just watch them instead of the second half!

Excellent post, but consideration and acknowledgement should be given to all Celtic supporters who have to travel

    HH.

Ps: it would be interesting to ascertain the demography of participating Supporters at Parkhead .Is that allowed?

    HH.

  22. BMCUW,

i agree with the gist of your post but 6 dogs at 4/1 gives you 120%.

the worst over rounds you will see are at Shawfield dogs, sometimes as high as 180% and above at times

  23. Forget extending the main stand. Build the fan’s café first. More people will frequent the café than extra fans will attend matches. It will be cheaper to build too.

    FACT.
