The overlap-ers are back

143

Kieran Tierney’s cross for Liam Scales to score Celtic’s fourth goal on Saturday encapsulates why Brendan Rodgers wanted the player back.  Meeting a ball first time and sending a cross into the danger area sounds like an easy thing to do, but how many times have we seen promising moves crumble when the cross hits the first defender, clears the penalty area or goes out of play (looking at you, Daizen)?

That goal is an early indication of what we have discussed a few times recently.  Celtic will pivot away from the inverted fullback system to the overlapping model.  Kieran and Alistair Johnston (who is also naturally an overlap-er) will be asked to get crosses into the box.

This impacts who you need in the box (more like Adam Idah, less like Kyogo) and changes the shape of the midfield.  It will be an interesting watch to see how this progresses between now and September.

My old man was at that game in the old Ajax stadium back in 1970. He said his pal and him got chased. He also said then it was the first time he had seen the Israeli flag. He only realised that is what it was because his pal was Jewish and he told him. The irony of him being Jewish and being chased out of the old Meer stadium was often spoken about. Worse than that they beat us 3-0 with all the goals coming in the final 30 mins I think. Apparently not big Billy’s finest game. According to them anyway.

To be fair it was a phenomenal Ajax side in a phenomenal Dutch era. We might have given them a better game a year later if we had beaten inter and we had evolved with probably a stronger team.

  3. I was at that 1970 game in Amsterdam. Surreal experience. Five hundred British soldiers stationed in Germany arrived in the centre of the Celtic support and support us they did. One of them, a Hun from Bridgeton wore his Rangers scarf they all had bottles of whisky/gin/vodka either them which they shared with the Celtic supporters. Skirmishes after the game with Ajax fans. We played well but totally collapsed in that last half hour losing three goals.

That game was moved from the old Ajax stadium to the Olympic Stadion to accommodate the large crowd. The Dutch fans were desperate to see how Ajax would do against Celtic and Celtic had a very large support at the game.

  6. Benji Harry Kane Nygren.

Very similar movement and style….Obviously Nygren is better👍🥴

  7. Looking at the draws today, the huns will be in a spot of bother if they go out against the Greeks. Their Europa draw looks more difficult than their Q3 CL draw.

Thanks AT. Painful memories. Great Ajax team. We beat them 1-0 in the return leg at Hampden in front of a 91000 crowd. They were very comfortable in that game though. Very tall team with great physiques and skilful with it.

  20. Anybody get tired about stories about Celtic phoning clubs to ‘Express an interest.”? What damn use is that?

You just give information to the competition when someone at the selling club blabs. Just get the cash on the table equal to our evaluation, “Here’s our bid. Take it or leave it. You have 7 days to respond.”

I’m reading now that Antwerp state we have never bid or even been in contact about Balikwisha.
