The overwhelming need for a central defender

267

With the departure of Jozo Simunovic we are short of a central defender, so hearing Brighton’s Shane Duffy has held talks with Neil Lennon is no surprise.  Whereas Jozo was mostly a fringe player, it is unlikely we would bring a 28-year-old on what will be high wages into the squad to sit on the bench.  He is not a ‘project’.

Celtic played some of their best football last season when they had three at the back.  Performance in the defeat that still causes alarm, at home to Newco in December, improved significantly when BItton came on midway through the second half to form a back three with Ajer and Jullien.

The game was still lost, but from that point Celtic’s midfield got a grip on the game.  An extra body in the middle of the park changed everything.  We kicked on and bossed away games at Kilmarnock, Hamilton, Motherwell and St Johnstone with three central defenders, scoring 14 for 1 conceded.  There are lots of reasons we won the league last season but this tactical switch was the most important.  History would be different if we persisted with a four.

I reckon we have enough for Reykjavik at home with any formation, but I would not be happy playing our current back four against Djurgardens.  Duffy, or anyone ready to slot in, asap, please.

  1. Not the window for projects. Duffy would be our best signing in years. Fingers crossed it happens.

Celtic have completed the signing of striker Albian Ajeti. 4 year contract. He joins from West Ham in a £5m deal.

  4. Seems Ajeti was on 50k a week at West Ham, cracking record with Basel, a good team in a good league. Griffiths or Eddy’s replacement?

Truck driver just reversed into Argyle St Celtic shop and wrecked the frontage

Seen that, think just the signage damaged and no one hurt thankfully. Serious questions for the driver.

    Are you a hun?

  7. Looks like that driver turned wrong way out of Mitchell Lane and tried to reverse turn. Wonder how he gets out now; probably need the polis to close the four corners and let him turn there

  8. Duffy in and Ajer out would be a sound bit of business. Would rather see El Hamed in a back three than Ajer and if I remember rightly, we also have one or two very good youngsters for these positions, no? Who got the call up against Hamilton last season and played really well?

Must be time we gave Soro a run as well in place of Broonie.Paid 2.5 million for him and hasn’t had a sniff.

“One of the many examples – N’tcham, he has been the shadow of the player he could have been for us because of the “business” side of the game.”

    ————————-

You’ll have to explain that one to me. How is the business side preventing Ntcham from performing or being played? Is he on a bonus structure whereby he gets another million if he starts 10 games in a row?

“I’ve got a different philosophy in life from most Scots and part of that is looking at things holisticaly.”

I’ve no ide if most Scots are or aren’t holisitic but, personally, I have always found it a boastful word which rarely lives up to its billing. I’m satisfied if someone is thorough or comprehensive.

“Now it was convenient for the business to let Lustig think they were taking up his extension option until they decided who was replacing him and from a business perspective that makes sense here’s what I think…”

    ————————————

It was convenient from a football sense too. We don’t want players protecting themselves as they prepare to land a contract elsewhere. Your argument was that treating players like we treated Lustig would prevent players from wanting to come. We have signed a wheen of players since then- none of them are overly sentimental when it comes ot self interest.

“Why is the squad always managed for the convenience of the business, it’s the tail wagging the dog?”

Why did you stop beating your wife? In short, I don’t accept the implicit assertion. In BS management speak, befitting the use of the word holistic, there is a symbiotic relationship tp be had from a proactive integration of the multiple spheres of activity involved in running a modern go-ahead fitba outfit.

  12. The driver has tested positive for covid so all Celtic shops and online sales have been suspended for 2 weeks.

  13. No matter how many at the back, but we simply MUST play 2 up top and we need real pace in the team.

Heard we were sniffing about looking at Wilshire, great player but very injury prone.

    KINGLuBO

  14. El hamed for me right side jullien Duffy if he can play left side, Ayer as brownies replacement long term he is no centrehalf

  15. Duffy certainly won’t be bulied by the huns. Definitely would be a good signing.

  23. Does anyone know if Luca Connell is playing in midfield or defence for the 2nd team? Everyone was raving about him when he signed and he was considered ready for Ireland call up.

  24. Denia

I saw him on TV against Hibs he was fantastic, great passer left footed reads the game well played central midfield, he isn’t the biggest but from what I saw he is a very good footballer.

  25. The 4231 has not worked for a long time. To often the wide players in the 3 need to drop back and so pick up the ball 30 yards from their own goal, criminal to have our wide players spending so much time in their own half. It takes players to long to get up the pitch, the high position the fullbacks take to support attackers exposes the 2 centrebacks when we are on the front foot.

My preference would be a 343 with more emphasis on pressing teams at the top, keeping forwards high up the pitch and getting our attackers on the ball earlier.

    Says it all really.

There are so many in our support who believe that it would be sweetness & light for our 17% in an independent Scotland. That the huns with their “butcher’s aprons” and Rule Brittania, would have been well trully f***** and would never again look to exert their influence & beliefs on Scotland, despite the fact that would then be a much bigger fish in a smaller pool.

Catholic education would be dispensed with swiftly on the premise that “we are a small poor country who has been robbed by Westminter, therefore we cannot afford a separate schooling system for Catholics.

Apart from the fact that Scotland would be de facto bankrupt for at least ten years, who do they think would be holding the ‘whiphand’ in all institutions- could I suggest that even if we were to ‘punch to our maximum weight (17%)’, we’d have some 87% against us.

SNP his succeeding in conning many for their vote, will they also rob them of the religion, culture & heritage?

Some contributors to this site & others have recently stated that they would choose independence over 10iar, “any day of the week”. Father forgive them for they know not what they do….I certainly couldn’t.
