The overwhelming need for a central defender

267

With the departure of Jozo Simunovic we are short of a central defender, so hearing Brighton’s Shane Duffy has held talks with Neil Lennon is no surprise.  Whereas Jozo was mostly a fringe player, it is unlikely we would bring a 28-year-old on what will be high wages into the squad to sit on the bench.  He is not a ‘project’.

Celtic played some of their best football last season when they had three at the back.  Performance in the defeat that still causes alarm, at home to Newco in December, improved significantly when BItton came on midway through the second half to form a back three with Ajer and Jullien.

The game was still lost, but from that point Celtic’s midfield got a grip on the game.  An extra body in the middle of the park changed everything.  We kicked on and bossed away games at Kilmarnock, Hamilton, Motherwell and St Johnstone with three central defenders, scoring 14 for 1 conceded.  There are lots of reasons we won the league last season but this tactical switch was the most important.  History would be different if we persisted with a four.

I reckon we have enough for Reykjavik at home with any formation, but I would not be happy playing our current back four against Djurgardens.  Duffy, or anyone ready to slot in, asap, please.

So you’re not saying he is ready, well im suggesting he is not ready absolutely convinced just as the manager is because he’s not even given him a place on the bench in a full year.

I actually think we’re agreeing, glad we got there in the end.

Morelos May still be there by the shutting of the window because Sevco are asking for stupid money.

What im saying is that whenever he goes (and he will) Sevco will receive a lot more than 4M.

We will find out eventually the true figure either through Sevco accounts or the buying club, where smoke and mirrors is not a necessity.

Get Shane Duffy in he would be a good signing, well probably a loan but get him.

Just finished my email to the 100 staff in my workplace to take away their passports and for them to let us know their movements on a Saturday and Sunday/days off.

Following the thoughts of some on here, what could possibly go wrong with those new workplace rules and human right infringements I have created? Industrial relations will be at an all time high.

I think we need another list of new laws we can let employers make up, I will start it, as its essential all staff let us know their movements:

    1. Passports taken from all staff

    2. All movements after signout/clocking out have to be called into employer

Feel free to add to the list guys we need to sort this out.

Majestic Hartson…..that’s disappointing about your Bordeaux trip hopefully in the near future you will be able to book and complete another journey to that beautiful city .Missed out on south of France trip myself last month…..most annoying but not .uch we can do about it being more mortals and not footballers or political ‘advisors.

  5. Surely the SPFL would have to get agreement of Clubs to implement any proposed sanctions? They also serve who only stand and wait…

Agree……seems its ok for a united/independent Ireland but not for Scotland. Surely to god people must see a better way than the westminster crime syndicate. An independent country is the only way. Wether you support, like it or not the SNP/Yes, this is the route out. Then we can build our own socialist labour party or whatever to challenge and change democratically at least if anything for the future of our children.

Could be a classic Champions league encounter tonight…expecting a Bayern victory but with Messi in your team you always have a chance.

Hoping Duffy signs over the weekend…we could do with a hard man in defence especially one with Celtic in his blood.

  9. I love hearing the transfer gossip in here. My only source and I’m very grateful.

I also have to say that every time I read, ‘I’m hearing…….’ the picture that comes into my head is Whoopi Goldberg’s scam seance in Ghost. And that makes me smile still more!

  10. As much as I think Duffy would be a good signing. He did choose Brighton over us when leaving Blackburn.

One thing that has been good is the “Eat out to help out” scheme have enjoyed a few nice restaurants at half the normal price…unlike just now sitting in Cafe Nero with a £3.05 coffee in a paper cup…still gets you out of work for half an hour.Maybe Celtic could get so.e quality defenders for half price between now and the 31st of August.

Hail hail friend. I agree about the dodgy unionists’ posts and their distortion of stats to make.their sneaky and obnoxious points.

Remember back in the day, the political stuff was more knockabout. E.g., your fetish for Annabelle Goldie. Seems like a different epoch.

Anyway, hope you’re still swinging it good and hope we can meet up at a hoot soon.

  14. Anyone think that Aberdeen and Celtic will have their postponed ties awarded to the opposition , if you dont wise up, what is not clear is who will get the points for this weekends game between the 2, im sure something will be concocted.

  15. There was a home game (cant recall the opposition) just before the independence vote . The Green Brigade started the chant ” Stand up if your voting Yes ” . It quickly spread round the whole stadium . Looked like at the very least 60% were on their feet.

  16. I’d sell Ajer this window, not because I need to batter his reputation but because that’s a model we have bought into and I think he’s at the right time to move for decent money.

    ___

You could also point out that Fraser Forster chose to leave.

There is as always, a massive financial hurdle to get over with EPL players. I can only imagine Shane Duffy will end up a Celtic player on a similar arrangement to Forster.

Duffy is on £40,000 a week and would no doubt arrive at Celtic as a top earner. Our problem is, West Brom and West Ham are sniffing around.

  18. Why would Brighton loan to us when much needed cash would come via 2 EPL teams? Duffy I’m assuming would be a 1st choice at either of those teams and probably get a pay rise in the process.

    I don’t see it myself.

    ____

I’d agree. But he shouldn’t be allowed to leave for a penny less than the valuation.

It’s all went quiet anyway. The local press in Leicester say he isn’t a target for them. AC Milan have signed Simon Kjaer on a permanent deal and have the starting CB for the national team Romagnoli. That leaves them with 5 CB’s total.

There’s also been a change in management since Ajer was first linked with them. Transfer rumours often confound any logic.

We will see how it pans out but Neil Lennon hasn’t said anything different since no bids or enquiries for our key players.

  20. This Anthony Joseph from Sky Sports is the one who’s reported we are in talks to send Boli to France and we’re looking at Barry Douglas.

He was first onto the Ajeti to Celtic story and reported it as a done deal. The deal at that stage seemed to be done between the clubs but not between Ajeti & Celtic.

He also reported Ajeti was in Scotland when Neil Lennon said he wasn’t. Obviously the deal was close and talks ongoing.

Seems as if he’s the type to jump to conclusions but he must be in the know to a certain degree.

I have to say the Barry Douglas deal doesn’t excite. He’s turning 31 in a few weeks so we’re more likely to see his decline than anything else. Is a journeyman really going to be a massive upgrade?

  21. TIMALOY – agree on Douglas 31 – hardly long term improve on Jonny Hayes 33; Meanwhile we inexplicably missed out on Rosenborg’s proper LB Birger Meling, who went to Nimes for EU 1million. Smashing player.

  22. FAVOURITE UNCLE on

Is it BARRY DOUGLAS the football player or BARRY DOUGLAS the concert pianist.

    Askin for a dear pal.

  23. I think Barry Douglas would be an excellent signing. Great experience and is a natural left back . To compare with Johnny Hayes is laughable

  24. ST TAMS Jonny was deemed the most reliable LB we had last year; I found that laughable back then.

  25. I thought Johnny Hayes did a pretty good job last year. Featured in all our best wins and had the heart of a lion. I am beginning to to realise that there are a number of Celtic fans that I have got absolutely nothing in common with.

    Any new Defenders yet?

The SNP will never get Independence in Scotland, reason being, there are too many Voters in

Scotland, who do not want to see the break up of the Union, & that is a fact.
