The Patrick and Leigh Show

782

Whenever Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts were on the ball last night, Lincoln Red Imps sensed danger. Both could control instantly, control with little space and disorientate defenders. Leigh and Patrick aside, the rest had an excellent first half. Passing was crisp, accurate and fast.

The shape of the team, with variously Lustig, Brown, Tierney and Shevchenko operating in a moveable back three, allowed players to find space between Red Imps’ 5-4-1.

These games are not about impressing anyone, they are about getting into the next round, but the tie was over by halftime, allowing Celtic to step the pace down, and Red Imps to show that they were more than they appeared to be in the first half.

Stiffer tests lie ahead, when more will need to perform at the levels of Patrick and Leigh.

One of my favourite excuses for Celtic not signing players in advance of CL campaigns is the old “we’re after quality players who aren’t short of offers from elsewhere and who need to be guaranteed CL football before they’ll come to Scotland” line

So let’s see how that has played out in the past.

2008 – we automatically qualified for the CL. Who did we sign in the summer? Maloney, samaras (loan converted to permanent signing) and Loovens. Yep – they would have had plenty of other options from other top European teams at that time. I doubt it.

2012 – after securing CL qualification we signed Efe Ambrose, miku (loan), lassad and lubos kamenar. A stellar cast of top drawer players who were clearly inundated with offers but just waiting for Celtic to qualify for the CL. Supplemented in the January window – when we had reached the CL last 16 – by rami Gershon, tom Rogic, viktor noring and Colin mccade.

If those were our stellar CL signings, god only knows who would we have signed had we ended up in the Europa league.

2013 – after securing CL qualification we signed Bitton, pukki and max oberschmidt. Again, hardly guys likely to have attractive offers from across Europe and who were in a strong enough position to say to Celtic in July “well thanks for your interest, but I have lots of other options so I would rather string those other teams along until I know of celtic’s CL qualification fate”.

Remember – pukki was frozen out at Schalke and Bitton was in the Israeli league. I’m sure they’d have jumped at a move to Celtic earlier in the window.

The issue is that our board do not want to commit until they know whether it is CL, EL or no European football in any given season. That often isn’t cleared up until a couple of days before the transfer window.

And often at that point you are left only with risky signings – the guys that no one else wanted or took earlier in the window, guys that their own parent club want shot of for whatever reason, in short guys who are unlikely to make the grade at Celtic.

Think of the business we have concluded towards the end of the summer transfer window in recent years. Ambrose miku lassad kamenar oberschmidt , Bitton, pukki, scepovic, Guidetti, Blackett, christie, simunovic. How many of these guys would you term as a success at Celtic? Very few I would argue.

We should have started preparing for this CL qualifying campaign in summer 2015. Instead we assembled the usual troupe of projects and loan signings, most of whom are nowhere near the Celtic first team one year later.

Signing players isn’t a straightforward business. But if you leave things to the last minute or overload the squad with inexperience or temporary loan players then you’re asking for trouble.

It’s not really the way a supposedly well run football club should be going about it’s business. Especially one so dependent on European qualification.

  24. Surprised at the level of vitriol directed against Celtic plc and the signing saga from fans/supporters who arent in the know. Very strange indeed.

  25. BOB O’BALDY

It’s nothing to do with a cheap headline in the daily record, it’s knowing two months ago we could be in a situation where we have one fit and reliable central defender. We should have been signing a central defender a month ago, not to meet a deadline tonight for one game.

Surely there must be a central, defender that is better than Ambrose, Mulgrew, Boyata that would be available at the right price.

A simple answer the question asked – “do you think that a business turning over ÂŁ40 to ÂŁ50 million per annum awarding a CEO a remuneration package of ÂŁ1 million per annum is consistent with living within your means?” will suffice.

I don’t need you to tell me that CEO remuneration is set by the board, you were championing the club living within its means, and rightly so, I’m asking whether the CEO getting 1 million Gbp a year is consistent with that given the size of the club’s revenues.

I wasn’t asking about who set the wage levels. But you knew that anyway I’m sure.

    ====================================================

Some excellent points which , for me , underline the importance of caution in signing players.

We have a new striker who MAY prove to be able to do the business.

I agree , the back door is the priority and hopefully we can play for some time to close it.

I really don`t fancy the Kazhak gig .

A real tester for Brendan in every way.

  31. the glorious balance sheet on

    Macjay 1152

No, I don’t fancy the Kazakh tie either. I think Astana are a useful team who have plenty of advantages re a formidable home record, plastic pitch and oppressively warm temperatures. They also have a team full of recent CL experience from last year, where they proved a tough nut to crack in their group. We have only Forrest Lustig and brown of Wednesdays team who have CL group stages experience.

    Some grounds for optimism –

    1. 2nd leg at home,

    2. The time difference – game at Celtic park kicks off at 0045 am Kazakh time, finishing around 0230 am if settled in the 90 minutes but well towards 3.30am if extra time and penalties are required.

That surely will work against the Kazakhs. I think it was a big factor in us scraping through against Karagandy with the decisive goal in the 90th minute of the second leg at pushing on for 3am Kazakh time.

By the by – when Karagandy beat us 2-0 it was a huge shock. Big splash on the UEFA website, the talk of the football world. If Astana beat us 2-0 next week no one, either within the Celtic support, or the wider football world will bat an eyelid. That speaks volumes about how we have been poorly run in recent years.

  32. From what I have seen of Toure he is every bit as capable of a clanger as Efe?

We don’t know what physical condition Charlie Mulgrew is in?

Would he be able to play? Is the risk worth a new contract?

We saw what happened when Kris Commons got a new contract.

BR might not want him (CmMcG) around for 2 years on the back of possibly playing next week.

    Who knows?
