The Patrick and Leigh Show

782

Whenever Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts were on the ball last night, Lincoln Red Imps sensed danger. Both could control instantly, control with little space and disorientate defenders. Leigh and Patrick aside, the rest had an excellent first half. Passing was crisp, accurate and fast.

The shape of the team, with variously Lustig, Brown, Tierney and Shevchenko operating in a moveable back three, allowed players to find space between Red Imps’ 5-4-1.

These games are not about impressing anyone, they are about getting into the next round, but the tie was over by halftime, allowing Celtic to step the pace down, and Red Imps to show that they were more than they appeared to be in the first half.

Stiffer tests lie ahead, when more will need to perform at the levels of Patrick and Leigh.

In the 80s, we were away to Dynamo Kiev in the afternoon after losing at home. Mark McGhee put us level on aggregate. We then had a second goal ruled offside before Kiev equalised late on to send us crashing out.

Was it not old Oleg Blohkin (sp) who got the decisive goal?

No announcement as yet for game on Wednesday, but it will definitely be live, almost certainly BT Sports.

  3. WITS – as a very very occasional contributer to the Bookies Benevolent Fund, I will also be looking in for any tips. I always seem to arrive late to the party when you get winners! Usually what happens is that I see guys posting ‘WITS, yer a legend’, ‘WITS, thanks for the tip, paid for my long weekend in a Tuscan Villa (which I bought from the winnings’, so I bet on the tip for the late race at Dungchester or Ainstow, or Cheltendowra or some place, and spend the rest of my evening wondering what I could have spent my 50p on that I just donated to the retirement fund for Paddy Betfred and his buddies.

So today, I’m betting early and often. I’ve my 5p coins saved up all week and I’m going for it.

Just a bit of fun buddy!

Astana have scored 13 goals less than the 2nd place side in their league. Defense is their strong point.

  6. This week quite few nations’ coefficient took a battering as a result of teams getting dumped out of CL and EL:

Hungary – Ferencvaros & MTK Budapest out

    Serbia – Partizan Belgrade out

Sweden – Norrkoeping and Haeken out

    and of course

Scotland – Hearts and Hibs out

I know the man who organised that trip to Budapest. Great Celtic man who passed away a couple of years ago. Also, the wee bhoy who presented Liz with the flowers is Sean McKenna, a family friend, who still lives in the Motherwell area. He was best friends with my wee brother and I used to take tgem both to Celtic games.

    Great memories.

Trouble is that their style of play is the type that tends to cause us problems. Having said that if you look at how they defend you’d be amazed that they have conceded so few goals.

Galway is where he is the Man. I’ll find it hard not to join in then when he is Tipping – Hopefully many reports come back that I shouldn’t bet on his Tips prior to then. ;))))

  12. I think next Wednesday is the sort of game where a 0-0 draw would be great. 1-1 even better.

I know, that keep it tight then hit you with the sucker punch style, eg. Maribor. But I see us hanging in there next week and the following week going forward I think we have the firepower to really hurt them. Although we should have scored more against Lincoln RI the movement up front is already much better than in the last two seasons, which bodes well.

Don’t get me wrong, i think over the two legs we will win, but I think we should be prepared for a nervy away leg.

    When is it anything but?

  16. BMCUW –

Took a cheeky txt from a Jambo acquaintance Wednesday night, slagging us for getting excited about beating a part-time pub team.

Took great pleasure in returning the compliment last night. Gave him it with both barrels. Best bit was, I txt him when they were 2 goals down with about 20 to go. He read it as he was walking along the road, having walked out after the second goal.

    Karma’s a bitch innit?

  17. Every time I think of the Maribor shambles, my mind goes back to the first-leg. We absolutely battered them despite the 1-1 scoreline.

At one point, at 1-0 up, big Virgil headed a corner straight for the empty net, only for Callum McGregor to block it. As he tried to get out of the way, it deflected over off his shoulder. We should have came back with a victory that night. Maybe even a 2 goal lead.

Yep, with our away record you never take anything for granted.

Team selection will be telling, I do think we’ll score over there.

We All have concerns about the defence. All the Bhoys are getting up to speed though.

I have no idea about the Khazakstanians and how they play the game. I’m guessing they are a Money team, I really don’t understand why Celtic are playing them tbh, play them we Must and I reckon the Support being so Fresh and IMO Revitalised, will be that Mega 12th Man.

‘In March 1976 Celtic had to ‘adopt’ Roy [Aitken ]in order for him to gain entry into communist East Germany to play against Sachsenring Zwickau in a ECWC quarter final game as he was only 17 years old and not considered an adult by the East German authorities’

  26. In 1966, Celtic were drawn against Dynamo Kiev in the quarter final of the now defunct European Cup Winners Cup.

Celtic won the first-leg 3-0 at Celtic Park. The trip to the away leg for the official party was a nightmare.

The Soviet authorities refused to allow the game to take place in Ukraine, let alone Kiev. On the Sunday before the Wednesday game, Celtic still didn’t know where they were flying to.

Eventually, after Celtic contacted UEFA, who threatened to eliminate the Soviets, the club were informed that the game would take place in Tbilisi, Georgia. A completely different Soviet state.

Celtic had to fly to Moscow, then a second flight to Georgia, arriving on the day of the match. The players had a light training session before being sent to bed in the afternoon.

It is remarkable that, under such circumstances, Celtic drew 1-1 and progressed comfortably to the semi-finals.

Article today on Scotsman site interviewing the Karagandy boss who reckons we’ve no chance v Astana.

Isn’t it curious how the Scottish media consistently seek out views from the opposition so that they can pen an article writing off our chances.

You would almost think they favour the opposition!

    I know it’s a ridiculous notion.
