The players, the manager and the board

503

Celtic controlled the first half at Easter Road without really troubling Hibernian.  That control shattered when Nir Bitton and, more culpably, Scott Brown, combined to concede an unnecessary foul then penalty.  The subsequent lack of urgency to follow Scott Bain’s save and daydreaming at the second Hibs goal was typical Celtic season 2020-21.

You were not surprised at the outcome.  Before the game I wrote a piece on Newco’s accounts (it is important and I will pick it up during the week) but I knew when I was writing it there was a more than decent chance we would have to address this matter instead.

The players have first responsibility to resolve matters, then the manager, then the board.  Doubtless there have been several iterations of attempted fixes, but none have been effective. It is not too late to rescue our season but it will be soon.

  1. I’ve seen a few posters ask the question, would Jack Ross be a suitable Celtic manager?

Now unlike some posters on here I can put a likeness for a personality aside and judge on what’s best for our football club. So cards on the table, I’ve met Jack Ross on 5 occasions, he’s a likeable guy, my dad is a close friend and worked with him very closely for 11 months.

My dad has worked with Paul Hartley, Barry Smith, Danny Lennon, Jack Ross, Jim Goodwin and Peter Grant.

He rates Jack Ross as the best Manager he’s worked with.

He’s a great communicator, he instills confidence in his player’s, hes very likeable with the players, although only one player has been foolish enough to cross him in his time at Alloa and definitely came off second best.

However he doesn’t rate him as the best coach he’s worked with, the best coach he’s worked with is Peter Grant.

I don’t know anything about John Potter as his assistant but I doubt very much if he would be a capable assistant to a club of our stature.

Imo if Jack Ross was to be appointed I would only be happy if a top sourced European coach was added to the staff.

So even though I know him and like him I wouldn’t be happy for Jack Ross to be our new manager unless a top European coach was assisting him.

You see its not about personalities and who you like its about wanting the best for the club you love.

But help me if I’ve got this wrong.

The toothless board won’t stand up to corruption, and instead, they engage in collusion?

The toothless manager won’t stand up to the corrupt board, because having previously walked out on the corrupt, interfering board, he has been reappointed, having signed a non disclosure agreement, which demand’s that he will also be toothless?

And the player’s are disorientated, shapeless, and toothless, and have to ‘wear’ an out of date team captain?

And the supporter’s who are the only one’s with the REAL, season ticket, NON renewal power, to effect the changes that are needed to remove all of the above, but, sadly, the Celtic supporter’s post 1994, are also toothless, and for the last eight year’s, they’ve done nothing but, look for someone else to point at?

What part of the above have I got wrong, if any?

What part of the above have I got wrong, if any?

all of the apostrophes you used?

  4. OnenightinLisbon,

Agree. Major mistake by CEO with the calculated shower appointment—- Lennon has allowed standards to slip to the point Celtic look ordinary against SPL dross. A typsy DD went along with.

Paul67 tried to big Lennon up and I posted on here that Lennon would never deliver 10. Lennon failed at Hibs and Bolton. He has cost us 2 CL places against inferior teams with a fraction of our resources and was thrashed by Sparta Prague’s reserve team.

Lennon is done. The poll on the HB is 95 % want him out. He is being used as a punchbag by the Celtic support and he is 100% on his own. Lawwell will be looking after no 1 and if Dermot still has his marbles will remove this charlatan. His screwing up of the John McGinn transfer is 100% down to him no matter how him and mein host try to muddy the waters.

It’s almost cruel to read Twitter on the manager and Lennon probably wants out ASAP as he knows he will be the scapegoat. Lawwell will avoid media during covid and the manager will be 100% the fall guy.

The whole back room staff have to go including the mythical Kennedy who seems to have no relationship with Lennon and from what I hear is digging tunnels under him. He is the defensive coach and only one defender ran into the box at penalty yesterday as CH with hands on hips and RB shot the breeze.

Paul67 if your happy clappers website was to take a stand and call out the Beancounter who is responsible for this mess I would have respect for you. In a way your subservience to someone who throws you a few scraps is to be pitied. Your loyalty is to a CEO who has his head in the cash trough ( another 3mil plus incl LTIP) and probably dividends from preference shares is sad.

It would be good to know what you really think…honestly.

Ps don’t mind Lawwell having LTIP if business goals are delivered which includes CL qualification

Pps. Anybody can deliver cash and ebidta but FTSE 100 investors want more these days esp sustainability

Yeah you are right Paul Kersey, the Chickens have certainly came home to roost.

For far too long now, the Board have rested on their laurels, that’s for sure, with

the mind sets of, take zee money, & count zee money, & look @ the Balance Cheats,

sad but true. Their needs to be big changes, if we are going to move forward in

the right direction, or it will remain in a rut, sad but true.

  6. geebee1978

Neil Lennon was already a coach at Celtic when he took over as caretaker manager from Tony Mowbrey, and had been Captain under Gordon Strachan. Not over qualified I will agree, as was proven in the Scottish Cup semi-final and in the SPL the following season. Produced a very good team after that though.

  7. Huddle

    :-)))

In fairness, though,in `don`t` and `they`ve`, Paul used used the apostrophes correctly :-))

We need someone who understands coaching, tactics, and fitness – something that we were told was lacking after Lennon’s first stint and seems to be lacking now.

Someone on here mentioned Sean Dyche who has certainly run his course with Burnley and probably needs to avoid the mistake Eddie Howe made which was to hang around for the inevitable relegation and see his reputation take a battering.

People will talk about a style of football and the “Celtic way” but he has had to cut his cloth and has made a team fit, organised and motivated enough to comfortably survive the most competitive league in the world.

He’d be a huge step up although I fear it may be too late to save the 10.

  9. Don’t shoot the messenger, but there is word in Ireland tonight that WGS is in tomorrow until end of season

    Can’t argue against that

  11. The board were contented as the chants of HWG10IAR belted out from the stands and social media was full of ” Can you see them coming”

    HH to all.

  12. You are right Lucky Cody.

We have a so called CL Standard Stadium with Disco/Night Club Lights

However, not only do we not have a CL Group Stages Team on the Park/Field,

We are now struggling in the Europa Competition, & also Domesticaly as

well, it has now become embarrassing, to say the least.

  13. CAMBHOY on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 9:11 PM

That thought has crossed my mind – his son is obviously already here.

The problem with a short-term appointment until the end of the season is that we have primadonnas who aren’t sure if they want to be here. I’m not sure playing under a manager who they know will be off soon will really get much of a rise from them.

Unless WGS wins the cup and gets the job full-time in the showers :)

  14. ` there is word in Ireland tonight `

As requested, I won`t shoot the messenger Just what does ` there is word in Ireland tonight` mean ?

Where in ireland and by whom ?

  15. As one of the significant proportion who suffer from anxiety/depression, I’m a wee bit disappointed that there’s little reference to Neil’s mental health in the massive number of contributions here and elsewhere on the web. Neil has done a real service by acknowledging his mental health issues and I sincerely thank him for that.

For moths now, Neil’s body language, body shape and general demeanour have suggested something to fundamentally wrong but has anyone commented? More critically, has anyone reached out to Neil? Are we honest and aware enough in the 21st century that mental health is an illness, not a weakness?

For clarity, this is not a defence of Neil’s performance. On performance alone, Neil (and the coaching staff) should be replaced immediately and applications invited with no premium awarded for Celtic-minded or Irish heritage – these are bonuses, what matters is football credentials, vision and the authority to manage and motivate a squad.

Neil is a Celtic hero and he is damaging his legacy by continuing in this manner with strange selections, tactics, intransigence and negative communications. Yes, he should go but have we done enough to check exactly how he is? He won’t want sympathy but he could have responded to appropriate investigation and support.

Wouldn’t want to see someone coming in to work with Lennon – completely undermines him and also wouldn’t solve the problems Lennon is perceived to have with the dressing room.

It’s Lennon or a clean break.

Didn’t Phil say recently that two English-based managers had been approached?

  18. Rafa Benitez is the-man to go for.

Out of our league you say – probably – but he’s currently the favourite for the Derby feckin County job so if we can’t make more appeal than the team bottom of the English Championship then we truly are fecked!

  19. SID1888 on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 9:35 PM

I get your point but aren’t Derby on the verge of a takeover that could potentially make them one of the richest clubs in England?

I’m guessing any move for Rafa would hinge on that going through otherwise they can forget it.

  20. MAJESTIC HARTSON on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 9:41 PM

Don’t joke about things like that, please. This weekend’s been bad enough 😲

  21. Funnt that malky mackay just resigned

If the strachan rumour is true, has he been brought in as th number 2?

  22. Clunks,

I think Malky Mackay’s timing is interesting too.

That job must have been a decent number, and could have made a good name for him, so why quit when the SFA have just got their biggest boost in years?

Obvs there could be a good, sensible reason, but who wants to hear about that now 🤷🏽‍♂️

    :)

  23. Wasn’t Malky Mackay turned down by Crystal Palace for being an awful racist and anti-semite before making a pig’s ear of a job at Wigan?

Not sure of the role he did with Scotland but not sure if he’s the kind of person or coach we would want.

  24. *CQN PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2020-21*

    RESULTS FROM GAME #21 – HIBS 2 CELTIC 2 (Edouard(pen), Laxalt)

Apart from the first 20 minutes of the second half I actually thought we played pretty well yesterday. However, in a season such as this when it’s 10IAR or bust then anything other than a victory tends to overshadow the actual performance. As such, it can be hard to become detached from our disappointment and try to nominate the 3 players that played well. But I am glad that 28 of you (beating the previous all time low participation figure of 31) managed to do so.

The votes cast for each player are as follows (with my own choices asterisked) –

    Bain: 5

    Frimpong: 0

    Bitton: 2

    Ajer*: 18

    Laxalt*: 28

    Christie: 17

    Brown: 1

    McGregor*: 7

    Rogic: 0

    Elyounoussi: 0

    Ajeti: 0

    Edouard: 4

    Griffiths: 0

    Duffy: 0

    Ntcham: 0

So the players receiving points for the Hibs game are –

    Laxalt – 5 points

    Ajer – 4 points

    Christie – 3 points

    McGregor – 2 points

    Bain – 1 point

*Diego Laxalt has now played 8 games for us, been Man Of The Match in 5 and runner up in 2. In the game against Motherwell he was ‘only’ 4th best. Fast becoming Jobo’s favourite player*

And the overall table is now –

    1st – Christie – 36 points

    2nd – Laxalt – 35 points

    3rd – McGregor – 34 points

    4th – Frimpong – 30 points

    5th – Ajer and Elyounoussi – 23 points

    7th – Ntcham and Rogic – 16 points

    9th – Duffy – 15 points

    10th – Brown – 14 points

    11th – Bitton and Griffiths – 12 points

    13th – Taylor – 10 points

    14th – Barkas – 9 points

    15th – Ajeti – 8 points

    16th – Edouard – 6 points

    17th – Forrest– 5 points

18th – Bain, Elhamed, Klimala and Welsh – 4 points

    22nd – Jullien – 2 points

    23rd – Turnbull – 1 point

    24th – Bolingoli, Dembele and Soro – 0 points

And so it’s back into Europe with an away trip to Sparta Prague on Thursday evening with a 5.55pm kick off.

    Hail Hail!

  25. No Bobby Does It Petta on

A tourist is backpacking through the highlands of Scotland. He stops in at a pub to get a drink, and the only people in there is a bartender and an old man nursing a beer. He orders a pint, and they sit in silence for a while.

Suddenly, the old man turns to him and says, “You see this bar? I built this bar with my own bare hands, found the finest wood in all the land, gave it more love and care than my own family; but do they call me McGregor the bar builder? No!”

    He points out the window.

“You see that stone wall out there? I built that stone wall with my own bare hands, found all the right stones and placed them just so, through the rain and wind and snow; but do they call me McGregor the stone wall builder? No!”

He points out the other window.

“You see that pier on the loch out there? I built that pier with my own bare hands, drove the pilings against the tide and the sand, plank by plank by plank; do they call me McGregor the pier builder? No! . . . But you shag ONE sheep . . .”

    I’ll get ma coat.

  26. Philip Cocu…. Is available…. He was much touted on here as a messiah……. Lasted 15 games in Turkey and has now taken Derby to the brink in the championship….. But the experts would have had him in a flash… Tactical genius apparently…
