The players, the manager and the board

503

Celtic controlled the first half at Easter Road without really troubling Hibernian.  That control shattered when Nir Bitton and, more culpably, Scott Brown, combined to concede an unnecessary foul then penalty.  The subsequent lack of urgency to follow Scott Bain’s save and daydreaming at the second Hibs goal was typical Celtic season 2020-21.

You were not surprised at the outcome.  Before the game I wrote a piece on Newco’s accounts (it is important and I will pick it up during the week) but I knew when I was writing it there was a more than decent chance we would have to address this matter instead.

The players have first responsibility to resolve matters, then the manager, then the board.  Doubtless there have been several iterations of attempted fixes, but none have been effective. It is not too late to rescue our season but it will be soon.

So Christie wants a “different challenge”.

How about him learning how to hit a dead ball?

Absolutely agree. His return on investment in dead ball situations is poor. No sense of depth. Overhit after overhit. However, bearing this in mind, why are all attackers so central when they have zero chance of an effective header? Why no one deep in the far post area? If this is too difficult to coach, the problem is bigger that we already think.

    True. Almost but not quite.

Should we wait until it is over before action is taken?

  4. Need to build the MF round McGregor, Christie and Turnbull, Elyounoussi and Rogic too inconsistent

  5. Ive always supported NL & the team & very recently have questioned some things but I do & continue to do that with people I can trust.

Not interested in some of the accusations here from posters who know hee haw about me or how I support Celtic.

Dont mind respectful dialogue but not some of the other distasteful stuff.

In general I think we all want the same thing for our club but the way some go about it leaves a lot to be desired.

It has let NL down by bringing him in when it was not the best thing to do for either party?

Shamefully / lazy / self serving leadership from the Bonus Thief in Chief.

Why was he deemed not good enough in 2014 and yet by 2019 he was so good that the other CV’s weren’t even read?

You mention Rodgers in relation to the board.

You are aware that Rodgers publicly criticised Lawwell for not signing the players he wanted, and signing players he didn’t want?

    You slipped up there Peter.

Basically saying that they know they’ll get lots of possession but it’s making sure that it’s productive possession, keeping the ball moving and not just going side to side and they work a lot on this on the training ground.

I wonder what we work on….

Again … I totally understand some posters (just some) having reservations about our manager, and sometimes totally understand why …. but (always a but) why is it so absurd to some that other Celtic fans still back the manager ?? If the posters that still believe (hope) the manager continues to deliver trophies why can’t those posters who think he won’t not understand this ….

I think we need to look beyond this season as it now out of our own hands. We should be looking the future and asking is Neil Lennon the man who can take us forward ?

    Hardly unique in that regard.

It’s pretty much what everyone does. The only exceptions, in relation to Celtic, that I can think of are Paul McStay, Neil Lennon and Stan Petrov.

    Agree entirely, Paul.

If you’re going to panic, panic early.

Now is the time for leadership and the board must act before it’s too late.

  19. Armstrong signed a year extension and got us 7m, neither Christie Eddie seem to want to do likewise

  20. Lennon lost a lot of respect from players, remember he picks them to win games ,when we lose he is quick to criticise them, not once but a few times ,that’s not good management,so he needs to resign immediately ,Then hopefully we get a decent coach try and pull back Sevco and if we can that would be great,Then us Supporters should all get together and demand that DD P l ,I B ,WH McD and others on the board resign there positions ,if only

  21. They really do get every break going at the moment- sheep have half a team out, two deflected goals and a soft penalty.

People say Covid hasn’t effected them but it has – their opponents are regularly weaker by it….

I don’t think many of us on here agree on much :-)

I struggle to grasp the fact that so many fans/supporters seem to have chucked it … we have drew away to Aberdeen, Hibs & Killie … and beat at home by Rangers … it’s mid-November (with a season that started late) and we have had an unfortunate fixture pile up … we have played 13 league games and won 9 … but … I agree it could be better

Pretty sure two first team Benfica boys also tested positive and miss the Europa tie against them on Thursday … not trivialising a global pandemic but this virus must be a Hun :-)

  24. I think it is valid to question the players if one or two appear off form. However the entire squad seems poor.

We cannot and should not replace the entire squad.

For me, we absolutely must replace the cobbled together management team. We should have acted sooner. Every dropped point makes this season a harder sell to prospective new managers.

No more shampoo appointments, please. Professional this time, Celtic

  25. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

If you’re waiting for the players to save the season forget it. They’ve downed tools and are talking to their agents.

Our captain and talisman is finally done. He’s been magnificent for us for so long, but time has finally got the better of him. The penalty and his reaction to it yesterday summed up it’s the end for him.

Lenny won’t save it either. He’s the very image of a man past caring. He’ll either stay till the bitter end or go with a fat pay off and hold court in Tennants when it re-opens. Either way he’s past caring.

Big Pedro will go at the end of the season whatever happens. Another one with no personal investment in the future.

All the ingredients for collapse in fact. No leadership at at any level. No stake in the future. Escape routes all prepared.

Time to hunker down and become emotionally prepared for the ‘55’ jamboree.

PS I do wonder what the Board’s actually for. Apparently not the abysmal, heartless team performances or abysmal, inept managerial performances. Nor it seems to combat the serial financial doping employed by our sworn rivals.

Perhaps they’re only here for the prawn sandwiches and to collect the fat bonuses? That they do excel at.

  26. Ernie I get Mcstay Petrov and Larsson too but Lennon I would like tobe educated on if you will ?

  27. It all started at the Ferencvaros game. Lennon criticised the players and said some of them didn’t want to be here.

Every one of those players are still there. 2 days later he tried to retract what he said.

Should never have got the job in May 19 and what has happened this season proves why.

He must be replaced now. But personally I think it’s too late

  28. WG @ 2.21

Their luck will run out — yes in 12 months time when it doesn’t matter.

They are are busting a gut this season because nothing else will do.

We are jogging our way towards a fat well paid irrelevance.

Oh how we joked in the past that their grandchildren would have season tickets at CP.

Well not any more — the bigot pound is all to easy when you know you have no talent.

  29. paolosboots FC before PLC on

My tuppence worth is that the board never interviewed for the position and having received £9m? from Leicester were in a position to hire a top quality manager, instead under Lawwell we went for the cheap option, Lennon, Willo Flood instead of Fletcher, Deila, missing out on John McGinn yet £3.5m on Klimala.

So asleep at the wheel imo, however in times like these Desmond seems to get involved and he needs to. If we throw 10iar away then it will have been our own doing. I can see the whole top tier being shut and sevco possibly reaching the CL group stages and as someone else said earlier its game on then. Is that what the Board wants? 10iar would be a legacy for Desmond et al but decisions need taken now. I can’t see many managers who have the knowledge to hit the ground running at this time. Kennedy a disaster and over his head imo, Keane poor man management, O’Neill his time has come & gone, Eddie Howe maybe a name for the summer. Right now the only name i can come up with is Gordon Strachan. He knows what it takes, took a central defence of Caldwell and Mc Manus to last 16 of CL , “twice” and clawed back was it 9 straight win to win the league, He is more than familiar with the team and could take us to the end of the season. Not sure if the football will be pretty but Lenny looks clueless and i don’t think i’ve enjoyed one game this season so far tbh
