The pragmatic, substance over style, Neil Lennon

140

Brendan Rodgers thrilled us for two and a bit years, but the one persistent issue many of us had with him was his tactics against vastly better European teams.  His first experience at this level, a thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City, flattered, but subsequent losses of five goals at home and seven away were humiliating.  Brendan was a purist and not willing to send a team out prepared to clear their lines.

His teams suffered only one setback against Newco amid scores of four and five, so it is unfair to hold the mistakes made in December’s reversal against him, but we both know that the manner of Sunday’s win would never have happened under the previous regime.

Neil Lennon is above all a pragmatist.  Substance over style, tracksuit, not tailored suit.  He has significant challenges ahead in the Europa League, and if he ever wants to face a tier one club, he needs to get through a Champions League qualification campaign, but if and when he gets there, his team will not be shredded as easily.

    Morning all.

Quiet on here this morn. Good luck to Scotland later, but no really that bothered what they do these days. The SFA have throttled my interest in International Football.

Jobo Baldie, I hop you and yer better half enjoy your week in the Balearics.

Hope Scotland can win later, be good for the nation to have the buzz of qualification for a major tournament again, particularly as a co-host. Hard to see qualification ahead of Russia though who are banging in the goals. I believe there is a back door chance of qualification as well though, not sure how that works, or who are potential opponents?

    “Light the fire”.

Love the sound of that and it brings many happy memories to mind.

Including rolling up newspaper length ways and tying it in a knot, then placing them in the grate, adding some firewood, then some coal.

Apply lit match to paper and hey presto!

  6. A cautionary tale.

I received a letter yesterday, thinking it was a scam, to inform me that my car was not on the national Motor Insurance Database. To my horror I discovered that my insurance company had failed to contact me regarding my renewal, due in May, and that we had been driving the car without insurance since then.

I take responsibility for not checking but have become so accustomed to receiving reminders that I falsely believed my car was insured. The company admitted they had neglected to send out my renewal notice. I’m now insured with Winston Wolfe at almost half the premium.

Moral of the story? Don’t rely on others to keep you informed.

  7. Hunderbirds are Gone on

The death of Robert Mugabe, took my mind back to 1980. I got to meet, and befriended a Zimbabwean student in some of my Politics classes at Strathclyde. Cleo, for that was his name, invited a few of us to a party to celebrate Zimbabwe overthrowing white minority rule. There was about 150 attendees at a pub in Bath Street (Tavern in the Town??). Great night, apart from a bit of unpleasantness from three blokes, who weren’t happy that there was four white people at the party. First time I had encountered racism as a victim. Made me realise that there are good guys and w***s, everywhere you go. It’s why I dropped the Scottish Nationalist tendencies I had in my teens. Cleo was mortified, and to be fair one of the antagonists did apologise to me on the way out.

Took Cleo to Celtic Park, game against Aberdeen I think, he was blown away. If he is still alive, there is at least one Celt in Zambabwe.

The potential opponents are not known. Currently, it’s Norway, Finland and Serbia. But if for example, Serbia qualify in the regular group it will be Romania instead.

Kouassi should play against Accies. Why not?

    =======

We should be picking as strong a team as possible to ensure victory. Don’t want to do anything to increase the chance of throwing away the advantage gained last weekend.

Koussi – we don’t know if he’s good enough, and he hasn’t played under Lenny so any cohesion middle to front built up over the last 8 weeks will be gone.

Anyway, he is nowhere near starting a first team match. If he impresses he will maybe get a place on bench soon and get a chance to come on, and take it from there.

I take your point. Overall I just think Lennon should be working with the group still at Lennoxtown and preparing them for Hamilton.

If James Forrest or Callum McGregor plays 180 mins for Scotland in four days they will need a rest before Rennes.

We can start Brown, Ntcham & Rogic against Hamilton but I’d like to see Kouassi come on to relieve Brown after 60 mins (all things going well). Brown is 34 and getting something away to Rennes could be crucial for qualification.

Start Griff up top as well.

This is Hamilton Accies, one of the weakest teams in the league. If we can’t rotate against them then we can’t rotate against anybody.

They are weak but its an away game not on a great surface, I agree get the job done then rest the likes of Broony and anyone else who needs it.

I think most are ok right now though, any involved in internationals will have 5 days or so before club duty again. Its through the winter before the Jan break players might feel it but I think we’ll be fine.

I just think throwing Koussi straight in would be a mistake and that he should work up to a place in the squad then earn his start.

We are hamstrung with who we can start in defence but we should opt to give chances elsewhere. Griff should start. Ntcham should start. Rogic should play some minutes. Enyounoussi should get his debut (especially if Micky has an injury).

Agreed. No problem with rotating middle to front with established players and high profile, talented loanees like Elyanoussi.

Is Rogic back with us after the international break?

  18. Jobo enjoy your visit to the lovely Santa Eulalia with Mrs Jobo. If you are hiring a car you could do worse than head north to the cracking wee resort of Portinatx, abt 45/50 minutes drive through the hills. Alternatively there is a bus, no.20 or 21 I think, but check the return times, especially at this time of the year.

  23. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Hopefully CQN can cheer me up.

    I’m really worried.

On Sunday my team comfortably beat some impostors and I felt GREAT.

On Monday, said impostors brought back a guy who worked for them last year. They won nothing and his most memorable moment was punching our captain, receiving a yellow card and being called out by the MSM for a “shove”

    But I am really worried.

On Tuesday, I was reminded that our CEO was actually the devil.

    It got me worried.

On Wednesday, the MSM told me “The R@ngers” ( secret PIN is 5088) are coming.

    And it got me worried.

On Thursday, the MSM 100% confirmed that OE was leaving next week. Forget all that transfer window spin. He is OFF.

    It got me worried.

So far, Friday has been awful. I’ve reflected on Monday to Thursday’s events.

    I’m seriously worried.

    Can anyone cheer me up?

If you can, please don’t resort to spin and trickery like reminding me about Sunday’s result in an actual football game or showing me the league table or a link to our first team squad for 2019/20.

    Anyone? Everyone?

    :)

    Hail hail
