The PSG shakes and £600k from the Foundation

57

If you are anything like me, you will have a nervous disposition ahead of tonight’s game against Paris Saint Germain.  Both Champions League games against them three years ago were competitive, Neymar, Mbappe and Cavani competed to score the most goals.  We gave PSG their biggest win in the Champions League while recording our heaviest European defeats.

At the time, there was a pragmatism among many in our support, acknowledging that we could not compete with PSG, but while that may be true, that otherwise great Celtic team did not have the ability to shut up shop the way Neil Lennon’s side from earlier in the decade did.

With little over a week until our first league game, this is another important opportunity to get some energy into the legs, so Neil can be forgiven if he does not defend his 18-yard line, time for that will come soon enough.

The Celtic FC Foundation today announced its spend on pandemic-related matters has topped £600k.  This astonishing figure has helped low-income familes, socially-isolated people, the elderly and unemployed, the homeless and refugees, as well as NHS staff.  Projects across Scotland, England, Ireland and New York have benefited.

All of this took place while the Foundation’s usual income generating activities were stopped.  Without things happening on the park there would be no Celtic, but the Foundation is the best of us.  Through it, you and me achieve things that we would never be able to do otherwise.  It also links us all the way back to the impoverished streets of Glasgow in the late 1880s, when Br Walfrid first suggested a football club be formed to raise money for The Poor Children’s Dinner Tables.

As long as the need is there and the money exists, the work of the Foundation will continue.  Since the start of lockdown I have donated nothing but that will change today.  There is an article on the club site with details of how to donate via Paypal, text, Facebook or online.  I would also like to do something soon for the Foundation on CQN’s name.  As a community, we know the drill when others are in need.

Pretty sure Neil played vs Atletico in Europa in 2011, Barca and Juve in 2012 in CL, and Barca, Milan and Ajax in 2013. We also played Lazio under Neil last season.

UEFA stat for our 0:5 defeat at CP show we had 7 attempts, 4 on target whilst they had 10 attempts and 6 on target. We had 1 each off target

In the 7:1 away leg defeat, they had 23 goal attempts with 10 on target whilst we had 7 with 1 on target. Each had 10 pff target.

It must be another game you are remembering

    Big Jimmy …

A famous Celtic player from the early 20th century (might have been Patsy Gallagher?) used to walk to Celtic Park on match days wearing heavy mining boots.

That way, when he took them off, his football boots felt light by comparison and set him up nicely for the game ahead.

I’d guess Neil Lennon wants PSG to be our “heavy boots” tonight?

    :)

Sempre Losing 12goals against PSG in two games!

I remember away in the mist of time (1960) watching the Scottish Champions, after getting a lift over, losing 6-3 at home. They lost 6-1 in the first leg for combined score of 12-4.

Their conquerors lost 7 to Real Madrid in the final! I have always wondered how many the Huns would have lost by in the final

*Aye me tae at the time, back then still in primary we used tae roll our shorts up showing the white lining and with our white shirts on we imagined we were Real.

Loved them back then and hated Barca for putting them out the following year, unknown tae us the Barca hero in the 1st leg at the Bernabéu scoring 2 including a late equaliser could have been a thorn in our side 7 year later if he had stayed injury free.

Cheered on Benfica that late May night in the Final, we just didnae know the politics at the time. 11 year ago I happened tae be in Madrid and took the stadium tour including having my photo taken with their Big Cup, still find it hard no tae like them.

On the open bus tour we passed the Estadio Vicente Calderón and Mrs. TT asked why I didn’t visit that one, I gave her the old Phil Collins”No Reply At All”.

Your now comparing different era’s going back 8 or 9 years, Lazio are nowhere near the level of that PSG team of Neymar, Cavani and Mbappe. They also left out their main man at home, only playing last 20 mins.

If I was being picky i could also say the twice we reached Europa last 32 Zenit and Valencia were considerably better than Copenhagen.

My main point though is if NFL does go on to have an overall record than BR (i have my doubts) then that should be hailed as a magnificent achievement not a tool to snipe at our ex manager who totally transformed our club, giving us our best ever season domestically an invincible treble.

BR will always be a hero to me, i judge a man by his incredible achievements not his occasional failures because every manager has them eventually.

TIMHORTON If I remember right it was in the Sunday Mail. That’s when reporters were reporters and not the rubbish we have got now.

If ever a profession let itself down its definitely the profession of journalism in Scotland. How they can look in the mirror and say ‘”I am a Journalist” is beyond belief”

    * I was at a Billy Connolly concert several years ago in the Massey Hall down in Toronto, when the subject of Scottish sports journalist came up he replied “freemasons with laptops”.

  7. Today’s starting line up v PSG ……

1960 European I was 14 and of course supported the mighty Real. Was in the Hun end and many around us were supporting “The Germans” until Real took over.

19 years later Myself and young family moved to Madrid for work. Office was roughly 1/2 mile from Bernabeu so supported Real. After 1974 there was no way I could support the red/white and blue of Athletics. Real are my team and used to meet Laurie Cunningham quite regularly. Lovely player, sad ending

*I was 12 then and in the quali, many of my generation still have a liking for Real, politics or no. Amazingly as I come fae a wee place that had more volunteers for the Abraham Lincoln Brigade per head of population than anywhere else in the UK.

*I had a daughter teaching over there which prompted the visit, took in Seville but only because we had played there shortly before, took in the Catedral de Santa María de la Sede, which surprisingly to me contains the remains of Christopher Columbus, who didnae discover America, he never set foot in it and his son Ferinand, went up tae Granada with the Alhambra which is well worth the visit and even flew over tae Marrakesh where believe it or not I saw a young lad wearing the hoops sitting on a camel. Given the current climate I widnae go tae the latter now.

The most surprising aspect of Neil’s tirade against LG was that Neil himself was looking way way out of condition, I’ve never seen him with his belly as big as that. OK, we don’t need Neil to score goals, but still, not a good example to set, he needs to have a word with himself.

RTB – just a gentle reminder, Jock was overweight … but he delivered.

A manager can be “not trim” and successful.

    The two are not related.

    A “professional” footballer cannot.

    Non-negotiable.

All about opinions and am happy to have mine shoved down my throat by anyone …..

…. who can show me an overweight professional swimmer, gymnast, middle distance runner or cyclist.
