The purpose of loaning players

252

Motherwell, a team who have won plaudits for playing out from the back this season, based that strategy on Celtic loanee Stephen Welsh (25) in central defence.  Who saw that coming?  The player spent the second half of last season on loan at Mechelen, where he was a first-team regular.  He also played more football in that 5 month period than during any season at Celtic.

This term, Brendan Rodgers preferred to develop Dane Murray (22) but Martin O’Neill has now recalled Stephen, to help compensate for the Cameron Carter-Vickers shaped hole in the squad.  The move will shore up resources for the champions’ title push and be a loss to the Lanarkshire club.

Neither Rodgers, O’Neill nor Wilfried Nancy rated Manchester City loanee Jahmai Simpson-Pusey.  Simpson-Pusey joined Koln last week and got his first 90 minutes in the Bundesliga on Saturday – that’s more time than he played for Celtic.  It’s not often three managers decide against a player and get it wrong.  Welsh is never going to reach Carter-Vickers-level performances, but he should return a better player than he left.  This is the proper purpose of loaning players, not simply to get them out of the building.

  1. I always read Keith Jacksons collum on a Monday morning.

What he said about Jota yesterday is 100pc actionable and slander.

To save you looking it up he wrote….The word from inside Lennoxtown is that Jota is unhappy and ” not keen to put his boots back on “.

The boy has a serious injury.

I know the Scottish press is anti Celtic but that is a disgrace from a seasoned journalist.

  2. The debate slowly petering out.The outrage being taken over,by disbelief. This just cant be happening again.Surely not.We go into tomorrows game with chewed nails, jangled nerves.Pity the first player to make a cockup.

Mr Ilic sounds like he’s exactly what we need . A lyndon Dykes with goals and ability instead of tattoos .

You can bet we won’t be signing him at the prices quoted though .

Just one thing Lyndon , if you do find yourself in a Celtic jersey , please wear a scarf .

  8. Its been lost in the hysteria but there is some good news about Saracchi and Ihaenacho:

Martin 3 days ago: “It shouldn’t be too long now for both of them. They’ve been on the grass. They are training on their own now. They are not too far away.”

I think Celtic did try to sign him a few years ago when he was at Bristol City.

Unfortunately, he saw Bournemouth as a better option.

That’s what we are up against.

  10. …..he interviewed 2 Palestinian banned Doctors whilst others shuffled on by, this time only 1…..

MON risking his legacy shielding these pricks as well…….

    ————

“I don’t have any impediments from board level”

    (Martin O’Neill, 13 January 2026)

    ———

    Risking his legacy?

    Really?

Perhaps in your eyes ONIL but not in mine.

    I’ll happily defend MON’s legacy.

    His impact was generational.

Only Jock Stein had a greater impact as Celtic manager.

The period since Jock left Celtic can be justifiably split into the pre-MON and post-MON eras.

He took on a financially doped opponent with the media, league officials, SFA officials and referees in their pocket …

    … and swept them aside.

And he took us to a European final.

Martin is more pro-board than some on here clearly like.

If Martin O’Neill is to become collateral damage in one’s hatred of the suits … because he doesn’t feel the same way about the suits?

    … says nothing about Martin.

But says something about the hater.

  18. Some people are happy to take a Celtic manager’s interview and infer what is said…that’s fine

Some person is happy to take that inference and make it a quote, to rile up the support. Some person is a sh*t-stirrer disguised as a reasonable poster.

    You don’t belong here

  19. @Lurkin..good spot..

If Anyone here gets to 80 ..

Then they have ..children ..grandchildren ..great grand children

A million nieces nephews godsons .god daughters…etc etc

    Big ups..to Fav Unc….

  20. Where’s our replacement for Kyogo, where’s our replacement for Kuhn, where’s our replacement for Idah, executive?
