The rare advantage of playing in a weak league

130

Dundee United sit third in the league, having overtaken Aberdeen with a win at St Mirren five weeks ago, but that victory was their only respite among five defeats in six games.  They assisted Hearts’ climb up the table, resolved Newco’s away win blues and allowed neighbours Dundee a win which was badly needed.

Their schedule has them play four of the other top five teams in consecutive matches, starting with the champions at Celtic Park tomorrow.  United will work hard to contain Celtic, but the games which follow against Motherwell, Hibernian and Aberdeen will go a long way to determine if they qualify for Europe next season.

Brendan Rodgers will only every talk about the next game, taking your eye off the ball can be fatal in football, but with a Champions League tie in Munich three days later, the manager will surely rest some limbs tomorrow.

We play in a weak league which has little to offer apart from the ability to rest players at home against teams in poor form.  Ralston, Scales, Schlupp, McCowan, Yang and Jota should all start tomorrow.

  1. I assume Jota and Schlupp will get an hour each as they are likely to start on Tuesday? (at least I think they should start on Tueday).

  2. How did the Finnish keeper do last week ?

We can’t risk any injuries, especially to Schmeichel.

  3. Can’t disagree with any of that, Paul. The league is done and while our chances in Munich are slim – we have to try and maximise them. Rest the starting team.

  4. A wee birdy tells me that the council are goig to approve another standing section for celtic park, but also that matchday parking rules are to be put in place 9only residential permittings approved)

I agree , we can afford to rest a few before the demands of Munich . I’ll be particularly interested to see how Yang does with more game time, which should help him to feel less marginal . He seemed to regress after showing some flashes of early promise , but he has looked like a player in his last couple of performances . Same with Schlupp , who seems to be settling in nicely , while the likes of Anthony and Liam will not let us down domestically.

  6. lets all do the huddle on

so the hibs cup game kick off still hasnt been confirmed?

when you think about that is out of order. its been 4 days since the draw and there are only 4 games that they need to work out so what is keeping them?

and why is no one communicating as to what the delay is?

I agree with the football coaching legend Clement should be allowed the job he started at The rangers, their total sinking into obscurity

  12. I’m not a financial expert or clued up in employment law but, how does £1.2 m pay off a guy who has a contract with 3 years to run and earns (according to keevins) £2.5 m per year ?

Surely the remainder of his contract is worth considerably more?

  13. vale bhoy on 14th February 2025 1:49 pm

there will be performance break clauses to acheive the length of contract.

he only gets the full 3 years if he is hitting benchmarked targets.

MON talks about it , he wasnt expected to win the league first season, but did have to in year 2.

This season, i have the feeling, he was expected to win a cup, beat celtic sometime, run us close in the league, and get to last 16 in europe.

losing to queens wasnt in the plan.

what is it that queens keep on beating them either for tax or results.
