The rare joy of Swedish football

1341

I’ve only seen a Swedish team play live on two occasions, the national team, at Hampden, twice. The first was in 1977. Kenny Dalglish was still very much a Celtic hero at the time but back then I was captivated by Ronnie Glavin, who, for me, provided as much thrill as his more celebrated team mate.  Ronnie was subbed early in the second half but it was Joe Craig who made the headlines after coming on as a late substitute to make his international debut.

I was far back in the Celtic end but memories of Dalglish crossing from the right wing and Joe stooping low to head into the net from close range – his first touch of the ball – remain vivid.

I’ve a few great Swedish football memories of TV coverage: Gothenburg in the 1986 European Cup semi-final against Barca.  The Swedes were 3-0 after the first leg but wilted in Catalonia and lost out on penalties.  The neutrals were disappointed.  Gothenburg fared better the following season, edging Dundee United in the Uefa Cup final (I was disappointed again).  Heady days for both.  I recall cheering the same team on in a Champions League qualifier during our barren 90s, when European pleasure was taken second hand.

There are some who would tell you Swedish football is in dire straits.  Gothenburg, once the regional superpower, are currently 11th in the league, but Sweden has a rare joy, a league title competed for by up to a dozen teams.  The Allsvenskan has produced seven different champions in the last seven years, in fact, it is a bit like Scotland, without Celtic or former club Rangers (remember them?).

Clubs live within their means, have an absolute connection to their communities and thrive knowing that genuine talent will be rewarded with a league title. Aspirational Scottish clubs must dream of this status….

Looking forward to tomorrow night. The script is written for Tony Watt to ‘do a Joe Craig’.

Many years ago I had a dream about the number 66500 in Latin. It was very VIVID…

    Hi folks another newbie here

    been lurking for a while

now that(hopefully ) champions league is apon us again or should that be at last, thought i might as well join in. Got tickets on the table and cant wait for ra morra.

    In lenny we trust .

    Hail Hail.

  3. LONG time lurker etc etc…but infrequent poster who forgot his password many months ago, until finally getting my e-mail today!

Looking forward to the game tomorrow – kind of stating the obvious but really feel an early goal (or not conceding an early goal at least) is vital to settle the nerves.

An early goal the other way would have often, in the past, created a bit of panic on the pitch (and in the stands in many cases…) so tomorrow is a great chance to show how far we’ve come on under NL.

Looking back to the first game we really knocked the ball about well and controlled the tempo for a decent period in the first half which is most unbecoming of a Celtic side away from home in Europe so I really hope this is the new, mature Celtic finally ready for the big stage again!

  4. This must be a World Record for the number of new posters on a blog on the one day!

    Welcome all!

    HH!!

  5. First on page 2 is the new podium.

    On the Greek fans mentalness.

A Greek friend of mine is an Olympiakos ST holder.

I said to him that if we get them in the group, possible, he could come to Glasgow, stay at my place and I’d take him to Paradise for the match, where he would be welcomed, in full Olympiakos kit, into the Gazebo etc etc.

I said that I would go to Athens to their home game with him.

To which he replied, ” no way you would not be safe even as my guest.” They don’t take prisoners.

He later showed me video of their fans’ crazy behaviour. A riot of flares, smoke bombs etc. Seemingly little restraint if opposition fans are encountered.

Anyway, Murph and Bang Bang off, surely means a quality forward in. eh!

What worries me is that he can play in all 3 positions we are looking to strengthen.

  8. Short and sweet from the Celtic site.

STRIKER Mohamed Bangura has returned to Swedish side, AIK, on loan until the end of December 2012.

The Sierra Leone internationalist joined Celtic from AIK in August last year, and he has made 16 appearances for the Hoops, though he has been unlucky with injuries during his time at the club.

Everyone at Celtic wishes Mo every success during his loan spell at AIK.

  9. Dead and Loving it on

Quite pleased that we have managed to let the two guys go on loan, don’t think they have a future with us

so that will clear the decks a wee bit now

First choice would be Jordy bhoy, then Russell

I just bunked to this one too so will repeat my welcome from previous…..

Welcome! I do not debate a lot and only rarely comment but I look forward to reading your contributions. Your enthusiasm and obvious sense of humour (hu, hu, hu, hu!) caught my eye – and it bloody hurt.

  11. Arsenal prepared to slash prices in bid to offload fringe players

Arsenal will step up efforts to offload Nicklas Bendtner, Andrey Arshavin, Marouane Chamakh and Ju-Young Park before the transfer window closes on Friday.

The Gunners are in the market to sign a defender and a midfielder — targets include Montpelier’s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Swansea’s Angel Rangel — but want to trim their wage bill first by selling several fringe players.

Park was virtually anonymous in his debut season — starting just four matches and scoring his only goal against Bolton in the Carling Cup — yet has also attracted interest from several clubs including Blackburn and Celta Vigo.

Arsene Wenger is adamant the South Korean striker could be successful in England but has indicated he will not stand in the player’s way if he desires more regular first-team football.

I wouldn’t mind Park coming to Celtic. Good striker before he joined Arsenal.

  12. Bangura off to AIK on loan. Hope they’re paying all the wages!!

Looks a sensible move- hopefully he can get back on track there.

Hopefully also is a sign we will be bringing a striker in

    ….on season long loan deals

I hope not, loans have never worked out for us. they are the diet option in the transfer market and deliver less satisfaction as a result. I think it’s because the player has no loyalty to the club he goes to and, let’s face it, he wasn’t good enough for the loaning club to want to hold on to

  18. Is there any chance Beeching could shut down the railways from Ipswich before December. If so I would willingly give Daryl a refund for his return journey if he will just stay there. Mo B I think is worth persevering with for a little longer. He shows some kind of promise and perhaps we have not quite brought out the best as yet.

Allow me to counter that argument with Fraser Forster.

Granted he is only one example where it has worked but before him Artur Boruc was also on loan although we signed him within a few months.

In the main however, loans are rarely successful.

For ANYBODY who is called by someone offering to buy your Tic shares:

1 If it came from a withheld number hang up instantly, do not talk to anyone who doesn’t share phone numbers as no real company does this

2 ask them for their FSA registration number (they’ll start stuttering and hang up)

3 Tell them cold calling offering financial services is illegal in the UK

    Stupid huns…

SEVCO could strike a deal for German midfielder Michael Fink before their signing ban kicks in on Friday night.

The 30-year-old has arrived at Murray Park in a bid to win a contract with the Ibrox side, and will train with a handful of other trialists who have been under the eye of boss Ally McCoist for the past ten days.

Fink is a free agent after he left Turkish side Samsunspor at the end of last season.
