The Ross Wallace Deployment

1125

I’ve never treated the Ballon d’Or seriously, but would you be alarmed if your manager overlooked two of the most outstanding footballers of all time, to vote for one of the poor relations in an outstanding, if waning, Barcelona team.

England manager, Roy Hodgson, is entitled to his opinion but in nominating Javier Mascherano, he’s started a debate which will not reflect kindly on him.

I remember when Martin O’Neill was in charge of Celtic, he could do or say anything and no matter how incongruous it seemed, we all looked for hidden wisdom.  Martin knew much more about the game than all of us but this authority was uniquely evident.  I don’t remember any other Celtic manager being regarded with such awe, and I go back to the latter Stein days.

Whether Mascherano is fit to pass the ball to Leonel Messi is beside the point, Roy’s opinion is a prisoner of fortune.  He’s dead meat to his critics.

For all of Martin’s brilliance he wasn’t one for cutting edge tactics.  He knew what worked for him and stuck to it.  So when Gordon Strachan came along with some new, ‘ideas’, the reaction was not appreciative.

Gordon’s early days (years) were remarkably hostile but it’s what I’ve regarded as The Ross Wallace Deployment which remains in the mind as an unfinished debate.

Ross was a left winger.  But, five goals down after a first leg capitulation in Bratislava, Gordon deployed him on the right.  The outcry was palpable.  We’d never heard of playing a left footed player ‘out of position’ like this.  What is now commonplace – to mix a left and fight footed full back and winger on the same side – was both new and proof positive that Gordon Strachan was a deluded simpleton.

There’s value in the opinions of the outliers, so my vote for the Ballon d’Or would have gone to Efe Ambrose. Gordon Strachan was a better manager than any of us knew at the time.

However, the good news is that if you choose to sign up to our onerous contract and donate another £10 into our funds, then we will enter your new team into Week 2 of the competition. We will simply airbrush the truth and peddle the myth that you have retained all your history and your newco team is the same team that entered last week.

Please let us know that you wish to take part in this collusion as Last Man Standing 3 requires a strong 99 teams in week 2.

  8. What is it with the Govan mob that changes people? Naismith seems to be a completely different character at Everton from the thug who broke his own leg trying to break someone else’s. Men you thought would be sensible became monsters donning a blue shirt. There must be something in the water that’s not holy, but changes character like a cancer. The supporters are the same. Maybe Ibrox needs an exorcist.

I dont want to give the wrong impression. Compared to most other large cities, Toronto is still quite clean and friendly. However, Sydney was much cleaner – but it might be the cleanest and prettiest city I have ever visited, so, it is certainly not the norm..

And Toronto is still friendlier and safer than most big cities I have been too. But, creeping Thatcherism has infected Canada like it has many other countries. In that time, as in Britain, there has been a real shift to the right, and now thanks to people like our PM, what once would have been unthinkably mean spirited and reactionary is now accepted as middle of the road and the norm. For example, the number of people we now have sleeping in the street (at least one person died recently on the street from the cold) is shocking, and is increasing all the time. This was almost unthinkable when I was younger. We are increasingly becoming an American satellite, which makes me sad.

Dont get me wrong – Canada is still a very, very good place to live and raise a family, certainly so compared to most countries today. Unfortunately, every country seems to be a little less compassionate now than it was 20 years ago, so Canada is not alone in that respect. Perhaps it is because Canada once was something of a beacon in the world that I notice and lament its diminution as much as I do.

  11. Any chance that the Celtic support could start now and raise awareness of the vile nature of the so called ‘Famine Song’? As sure as night follows day this will be sung at the semi. If the MSM, MSPs, Sky Sports, Murdo etc and Nil by Mouth etc are all asked now how they will react, then we can call them out on this. It will be too late after the game!

I was going to print the words here but it is extremely offensive.
