The SPFL’s beneficiary squeezed again

127

I know demand from broadcasters is terrible and money is poor. It’s also true that means Scottish Premiership clubs are desperate for cash, any cash, but Celtic are not one of those clubs.

It’s Celtic who subsidise Scottish football, from top to bottom. It’s Celtic fans who are inconvenienced by an 8pm Saturday night kick off at St Mirren next month.

The league’s great beneficiary is Celtic, not Sky Sports, that source of revenue should be nurtured, not inconvenienced.

    Totally agree…

The SPFL’s Broadcast partner and Broadcast deal is woefully poor.

In fact it runs to 2029 and the high heid yins at the SPFL negotiated a worse deal than the one before.

With the huge inflation in media content – SPFL will be getting less per match in 2029 than they did a decade earlier.

    The BSkyB deal was delinquent.

Celtic in the UCL, as well as the kudos and putting Scottish football on the European map – bring in the big bucks.

    Hail Hail

    what are you talking about?

    what celtic fans are inconvenienced?

we only get about 1200 tickets – will any of those who get the tickets be inconvenienced?

if they are then there are 10 times that many who would take their tickets from them.

    a total non-argument.

and a great kick-off time despite the fact i almost certainly wont have a ticket so will be watching it on a telly somewhere.

Problem is Paul, but did you not welcome the renewed SPFL/SKY deal when it was announced by Neil Doncaster back in September 2022? I do believe you did, “the only show in town” is a phrase that springs to mind. A deal which was negotiated half way through the previous one, and which as Chairbhoy has pointed out offers a diminished return on every match shown on the Sky platform. It also involves up to 60 matches per season and broadcasting slots have to be found from somewhere ergo 8pm on a Saturday. Would inconvenience a lot of travelling fans if it was a home game but again as Lets All Do…. has pointed out only 1200 of us will get tickets! Whether there is/was better deal out there is another thing, we’ll never know the answer to that question.

  4. While not discounting Paul’s point, Huddle and Celtic Mac are not wrong about small numbers affected.

I had many good Saturday night at the Singtims for Celtic games but that’s only the ones I remembered…..maybe the rest were shite.

    non-sensical comment.

celtic have received a reducing allocation for st mirren park over last seasons,

1200 stated here, or just 15% of the 8,000 capacity.

if it is inconveinient or support wont turn up will they ?

  6. It’s Celtic fans who are inconvenienced by an 8pm Thursday night kick offs for Europa League matches prices at £45 with no concessions

Celtic families unable to afford these prices.

PLC unable to answer the question at the Meeting on why that pricing is ok /

    Celtic v Bragga – 46.000.

    12,000 unsold seats.

    What’s wrong with an 8pm Saturday kick-off?

People go to cinemas, theatres, gigs on Saturday nights. Why not the football?

It’s 50 years since the first weekend kick-off was moved from 3pm Saturday and some supporters still blub every time a game is given a non-standard kick-off.

    Jeezo it’s not as if it’s an 8am kick-off.

  8. saint stivs

How do you know there were 12,000 seats unsold, as opposed to unoccupied?

From what I could see on the CFC Tickets Online graphic before the Bragga match no way were there 12,000 seats available in the General Sale.

  9. Por Cierto on 14th October 2025 12:52 pm

And what will Celtic PLC do about it? por cierto

I am sure Celtic PLC have complained and will do so again. However, Celtic have only one vote same as all teams. I have been told at SPFL meetings Celtic continually lack support and their views are ignored with only one or two clubs supporting Celtic. We refuse the £75,000 available from Premier Sports for Live games not on SKY but most others take this option when offered.

Maybe its because the monies available are small in terms of Celtics turnover but on balance are huge to the other 11 small clubs. 8pm on Saturday is not a popular time with most supporters but others may find it convenient.

The more ridiculous issue is the thousands of empty seats on view with Celtic fans refused these tickets. The thistle game showed Hundreds of empty seats and the Camera swung to a large group of Celtic Fans outside the ground looking over the fence. No mention was made of this nonsense

  10. Imo, Saturday night football does cause inconvenience to many.

It is a night where traditionally couples and families have together. Where the afternoon drinkers stagger home to a ” warm” welcome.

Can you not see the many household arguments.

Maybe to a lesser extent on this blog due to the demography.

On a slightly different topic Paul 67.

We were the only SPL club not to take the Scottish government loan. Free and easy money that will probably never be paid back in full.

Money we could have spent rewarding our faithful fans.

I do wonder if the ” restrictions ” on bonuses, dividend payments had something to do with our refusal to take the ” loan”

Nothing wrong with it per de,its another inconvenience for fans to overcome, those travelling to game are considered..

Yup folk are used to going to theatre, meal etc on a Saturday night, fitba more 3pm on sat, evenin k.o for weekday matches.

Folk ‘blurb’bout k.o times due to the inconvenience, some buy SBs at £2,000,down to concession tickets, for x amount games, games they do not get to as its incon̈leniency.

Why not have it at 2am in morning?try that for harvesting fans at different times

Football without fans is dated romantic Tosh,of its time,

    Saturday is a fitba day.

Saturday night is for well..your choice.

  13. Maybe if we had a vibrant, innovative board with balls, we wouldn’t be forced to play at 8pm on a Saturday. Actually, if I was a young codjer, I’d probably like that😁

  14. The hand of God on

I thought 46,000 for a 5.45 ko against Braga was an outstanding attendance. Was it the highest in the Europa league that night , must have been close. In Nice just now , just visited the Allianz Arena , pretty impressive, tram stop right outside as well as numerous food outlets in the adjacent shopping centre, Airport down the road too.Was buit I believe foe the 2016 Euros ( could be mistaken).

  15. The hand of God on

Big period coming up for Celtic now , I hope we are ready.Got a ticket for the LCSF , £30 , not too bad I thought.

Gp i am glad we did not take the loans, loans that will be repaid.

Celtic have operated solely by monies we put into the club, since 2006,so I would forward your valid suggestion and do something for ‘faithful’ fans with some of the £100,000,000m+ of OUR monies being held in the vaults of the club founded by Br.Walfrid.

The restrictions on bonus/dividend° i would suggest was due to us buyin SBs GP for a poor telly link as covid was about.Reward and bonus maybe would be seen as crass.

°I will need to research back to see bonuses and to see Dividend policy for that time .

In any other consumer business it would be some departments job to fill them up.

Would thousands more have attended if they had concession prices for kids ?

They also have made a blunder in already having general sale tickets for all the Euro matches months in advance, with no concessions, £45 a ticket being charged for matches in december and january.

No opportunity then to reduce prices. and fill the place up.

Shrugger Nicholson will just well shrug it off as protecting season ticket holders, what a crock of shit answer that was.

  18. AT,

I would wager these loans will eventually be written off. To date only circa10% have been repaid.

The bonuses, dividend aspect was a condition of the loan.

Like SS I am completely dismayed by the £45 standard admission to the Europa games. Totally unacceptable, the kids are the future lifeblood of our club.

Pricing them out is just wrong

Genuine question, what do we have so much unused money in the bank for? Especially if we are now saying it cannot be used on players.

In principle I like our club to be healthy and vibrant, but questions do need answered.

The TV deal is undoubtedly crap, subsequently I would like to see more focus on enhancing the match day experience of our supporters. We do not just bankroll the SPL , we massively help bankroll hospitality

  19. The Jungle and Celtic End were racists.

Just ask Viv Anderson and Mark Walters.

No wonder Thatcher’s Tories brought in all seating and transformed fans into easily gulled virtue signalers.

  20. Kevjungle,

If you really believe we were racists then why do you wear your moniker as a badge of pride.?

I was there on Jan 2nd 1988 when we disgraced ourselves.. Many of us were ignorant, ill educated and used anything to get at hun players.

But by God we learned, we used this shameful episode to educate ourselves and we can proudly proclaim that we are one of the most educated non racist support in world football.

You should be ashamed bringing this up.

  22. Beneficiary: a person who derives benefit from something.

How do Celtic benefit from the SPFL?

  23. Personally not too bothered re 8pm. Ko.

Probably would be more concerned if it meant all 53000 or so season ticket holders at CP were forced to change plans.

For the 7000 or so who are lucky enough to go to the game then I am sure there won’t be many who will be too put out. Saints fans mostly locals and the Celtic ones glad to have a ticket.

Respect your point re Saturday afternoon being football time. I guess that changed a few decades ago for bigger clubs though. For good or bad.

  25. I love the fact that we are able to watch the Celtic early on a Saturday/Sunday morning here in the US and then get on with our day. An 8pm (2pm US Central) is highly inconvenient for me. Having said that, I’ll be able to sip some beer without thinking about what’s for breakfast.

On a more serious note, I think 8pm is a big inconvenience for the players. It will be strange for them to have to get themselves in top gear for a late night Saturday game.

  26. lets all do the huddle on

from a players perspective, why is an 8pm saturday kick off more inconvenient than an 8pm midweek kick off in terms of their topgearachievabilityness?
