The SPFL’s beneficiary squeezed again

127

I know demand from broadcasters is terrible and money is poor. It’s also true that means Scottish Premiership clubs are desperate for cash, any cash, but Celtic are not one of those clubs.

It’s Celtic who subsidise Scottish football, from top to bottom. It’s Celtic fans who are inconvenienced by an 8pm Saturday night kick off at St Mirren next month.

The league’s great beneficiary is Celtic, not Sky Sports, that source of revenue should be nurtured, not inconvenienced.

  4. Sky Sports helps SPFL to record turnover

    October 8, 2025

The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) group has distributed £42 million (€48.4m) to clubs, the highest figure in the league’s history, its latest published annual accounts confirm.

The accounts reveal total group distributions are up £4.1 million (11 per cent) to £42 million from last year’s £37.9 million. SPFL group income totalled £50.4 million, breaking the £50 million threshold for the very first time, whilst fees paid to clubs by the SPFL also increased by £1.4 million to £35.1 million.

The increase in group distributions has primarily been driven by an increase in broadcast income. This includes a rise in revenue from the SPFL’s contract with Sky Sports, as well as the five-season deal agreed with Premier Sports last year to show 20 live William Hill Premiership matches per season in the UK and Ireland, which has since risen to 22 games.

The increase in broadcast revenue was further supplemented by strong growth in licensing, match data and sponsorship arrangements, with last season the first of a five-year, record-breaking sponsorship deal with UK bookmakers, William Hill.

Neil Doncaster, SPFL group chief executive, said: “We’re extremely pleased to be able to announce the strongest turnover and total group distributions in the history of Scottish league football. These figures are by some distance the best financial figures in the 12 years of the SPFL. Against a backdrop of worldwide economic uncertainty, the strong cooperation amongst our clubs and a shared focus to continue to grow our game commercially has been vital to achieving these results. We’ve recently reported considerably higher attendances per capita than any other European league in a UEFA report for the third year running, and these figures also reflect the high level of interest in our game from broadcasters and partners. Whilst we will never be complacent, we are proud that the league continues to make significant progress, and these financial results represent an important milestone in the history of the SPFL.”

Murdoch MacLennan, SPFL chairman, added: “Our latest results once again underline the strength and ambition of our game here in Scotland. Our small but dedicated team at the SPFL is focused on driving forward the league for our 42 member clubs and we will now look to build on this momentum in the months and years ahead.”

Group distributions include fees paid to clubs (through the ‘ladder’, which gives a fixed percentage

of fees based on where each club finishes in the league), parachute payments, monies paid to ScottishPower Women’s Premier League clubs, prize money in the Premier Sports Cup and KDM Evolution Trophy, and facility fees paid in respect of William Hill Premiership matches shown on Premier Sports.

    Kevjungle,

If you really believe we were racists then why do you wear your moniker as a badge of pride.?

I was there on Jan 2nd 1988 when we disgraced ourselves.. Many of us were ignorant, ill educated and used anything to get at hun players.

But by God we learned, we used this shameful episode to educate ourselves and we can proudly proclaim that we are one of the most educated non racist support in world football.

You should be ashamed bringing this up.

    ……..

    Calm yourself my ghood mhan.

If we were judged by todays woke, grassing, snitching, rewriting of history culture, then we would be smeared as racists.

Which should switch a light on to how stupid society has become.

    Who’s fault is that?

When Celtic fans start trusting a government who tells them nothing but lies then they become stupid dullards who are easy to gaslight.

    Who’s fault is that?

If you ask about todays landscape you get accused of making insinuations about the colour of people which will never be an issue with me, unless they become untrustworthy like a lot of todays people who are the same colour as me are.

Trying to point out WHY this is happening and by whom, and for what, is surely a geniune question?

The truth dizny fear being questioned, but lies need laws which prohibit questions.

Given that there are grassing snitches everywhere then I have to be very careful which words I use to convey this to the blog.

Given that most Celtic fans of todays era are Scottish nationalists who want independence and expect the Snp lying cabal to deliver this, and those who oppose Snp flavoured independence are smeared as unionists as though that is some sort of smear, but when you declare that you are a unionist, an Irish unionist who wants to se a United Ireland, then the rules are bent so that that type of unionist is not allowed, then we have arrived in La La Land.

Where every word can be twisted.

I’m not anti independence, I’m anti Snp crooks being in charge of any independent government, which will never happen anyway as Snp want power to steal all of your money and jail anybody who asks questions.

So, No, the Jungle and Celtic end weren’t racists, but they would have got the stadium closed and Celtic put out of the game for being racists, if todays woke clown show was in charge back then.

But that would not have been allowed to happen either, as football hooligans back then were were feared by governments, and football clubs directors, and if the woke, cancel culture stuff was tried out then, then millions of folk/fans who weren’t hooligans would have quickly become hooligans, thats why all seating really appeared because the energy generated by football fans on terraces must have been a worrying thought of “what if these fans come for us?” at the back of quisling politicians minds.

Back then fans had an element of resistance about them.

And now they throw paper aeroplanes!

The Green Brigade should grow up stop sing about Irish rebellion.

    WHY?

Because Irish Republican Volunteers asked them to drop the song book, as Irish People were now trying to process a hard won peace process.

If you love the Irish People….then let them have Peace.

    BUT.

Even those gallant Heros and Heroines must be crying their eyes out in heaven when they see Irish People being put to the back of the queue in their own country TODAY, and Irish People being called racists for asking why this is the case?

But stadiums being closed wouldn’t have happened back then because Ibrox would also need to be closed and almost every stadium in UK would also need closed.

Paul Wilson was probably the first player in Britain to get this monkey noise racism.

I witnessed it from Celtic fans 3 times at Parkhead against, Laurie Cunningham[Real Madrid], Viv Anderson[Nottingham Forest], and Mark Walters[Rangers].

If it is wrong to bring these FACTS up to convey how out of sync the landscape has become, well where are we?

    What is really going on?

Maybe Scottish pro independence journalist, and huge Celtic fan, Kevin McKenna could explain?

Huge numbers of innocent Celtic fans[who badly need to be wakened up] are included in this SEVENTEEN YEARS LONG MUGGING from Snp liars and Lobby servants.

How do we waken them up by not speaking about how stupid they look on todays landscape, and WHO did that too them?

“When will SNP voters finally realise they’ve been conned?”

  16. Lionroars67 @ 6:02 pm,

This is more PR from Neil Doncaster and the SPFL franchise, trying to sell woeful numbers as a great success.

The SPFL had a deal with Sky that ran to 2024-25.

For some bizarre and random reason the decided to renegotiate the deal in 2022.

This basically gave the Broadcasting rights of Scottish football away until 2029 at the worst possible time.

The deal was touted by the SPFL as a huge success, though some SPL Clubs disagreed.

In 2024-25 a 2 mn per season uplift and at least a further 4 mn per season on top, as Sky would take up another option.

Now, the old deal gave Sky 48 games per season.

The new deal gave them 60 games per season – so we were actually getting less money per-game on the new contract.

Add to that the 4 mn was for an extra ten games, this option was the icing on the cake for the SPFL.

However, the reality was, Sky did not take up the option.

Premier Sports got the extra matches.

Now, these were on the Sky contract for 4 mn per tranche of ten games.

    Premier Sports got twenty matches.

So on the Sky option that would be 8 mn per season.

Of course they don’t seem to have announced the Premier Sports contract value but it is understood to be worth £75K per game – or 1.5 mn per season.

    The Guardian

    Ewan Murray – Thu 11 Aug 2022

SPFL and Sky discussing new £29.5m TV deal to show 60 Premiership matches

The Scottish Professional Football League is close to extending its deal with Sky Sports until 2029, at which point the broadcaster would be entitled to show up to 60 Premiership matches a season for a payment of £29.5m.

Sky’s existing deal with the SPFL, which allows a maximum of 48 games a season, is due to expire in 2025. Under the revised terms, Sky will continue with that limit this season and next at a cost of £25.7m and £26.7m respectively. From the 2024-25 season the 60-match limit triggers a £27.6m payment which will increase by almost £2m for the next four seasons. Sky will have the option of further 10-match SPFL bundles at the cost of around £4m from 2024-5.

In each of the past two seasons Sky have opted to stop well short of showing 48 live matches; with the new commitment, their contracted minimum would rise to 42. With 60 games would come the option to visit each top-flight club’s ground five times, as opposed to the current maximum of four.

On the table for Scottish clubs as an added incentive is scope to sell up to five of their home matches each season on a pay-per-view basis, but only if the fixture has not been chosen for live Sky broadcast and does not – pending special dispensation – fall in the UK blackout window between 2.45pm and 5.15pm on a Saturday. As an example, Ross County could in theory have switched last weekend’s visit of Celtic – which was not selected for television coverage – to an early or late kick-off for this purpose.

Whether or not Sky appropriately value the Scottish game is a source of ongoing debate among supporters and in boardrooms. Stewart Robertson, the Rangers managing director, said last year: “When you look at the television deal we’ve currently got in place with Sky – and Sky are fantastic partners, so no criticism of Sky whatsoever – we have undersold the product.” Dave Cormack, the Aberdeen chairman, and Hibs’s Ron Gordon have made similar remarks about the negotiating strength of SPFL officials.

Sky’s desire to safeguard a higher number of SPFL matches will increase the sense that the subscription channel is wary of losing games from the upcoming renegotiation of a deal with the English Football League. The relatively modest year-on-year increases Sky have proposed to Scotland also emphasises the SPFL’s desire to bank guaranteed cash until 2029 rather than invite risk.

The delving of Amazon Prime into the Premier League market had fuelled earlier speculation that Scotland may pursue an alternative broadcast path. BT Sport shared coverage with Sky in Scotland before the former backed away from what was popular programming at the start of the 2020-21 season.

The SPFL had to revise its title sponsorship with cinch after confirmation Rangers had no requirement to provide an inventory. A number of Scottish clubs are known to be keen to learn what, in monetary terms, the lengthy contractual dispute involving Rangers, the SPFL and Park’s Motor Group has cost the Scottish game.

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/aug/11/spfl-and-sky-discussing-new-295m-tv-deal-to-show-60-premiership-matches

The 4 mn x ten games option that we were led to believe Sky would take up becomes a 1.5 mn X twenty match deal.

Premier Sports to show 20 Premiership games per season

    Wednesday 5th June 2024

The SPFL has agreed a five-year deal with the channel

The SPFL has announced a new deal with Premier Sports to show 20 live and exclusive Premiership matches each season, from this summer.

The news follows the extension of the League’s contract with Sky Sports in 2022, which saw Sky securing the rights to show up to 60 live Premiership matches per season.

The SPFL and Premier Sports have now signed a five-season contract for Premier Sports to show 20 live Premiership matches per season in the UK and Ireland.

Premier Sports acquired the rights as part of a competitive bidding process which attracted multiple bidders.

SPFL group chief executive Neil Doncaster said: “This is tremendous news for SPFL clubs and supporters alike and means that up to 80 Premiership matches will be broadcast live next season across Sky Sports and Premier Sports. This will be the highest number of live matches ever broadcast from the Scottish Premiership.

“With Premier Sports already having the rights to the Premier Sports Cup and Scottish Cup, they have cemented their place as a key broadcaster of live Scottish football.

“We are extremely grateful to Premier Sports for their increased investment into the game, which will bring an additional eight-figure sum into Scottish football over the next five years, meaning further record-breaking payments to clubs.”

Michael O’Rourke, founder of Premier Sports, commented: “We are delighted to strengthen our Scottish football offering to fans in what is a hugely exciting time for Scottish football at both club and international level.

“The addition of the Scottish Premiership means we are showing more Scottish football than ever before and we’re looking forward to broadcasting games and storylines from one of Europe’s most exciting and passionate league for the next five years.”

As for the record 42 mn paid out in fees to the Clubs, what happened to the 50 mn target of three years ago!?

“We have much work to do to achieve our target of paying fees to member clubs of £50million per season – but this is an important and significant first step towards that target.”

I’ve not been to an away game in years but I loved them. Always a different game to a home match (more of a contest I suppose). I remember that big terrace at Easter road where there didn’t seems to be any segregation between the support and not much bother, as I recall.

    Facts & Details is where it’s at…

Opinion pieces, Reporting, Propaganda, Fake News… it’s a complex world out there – remember when we only needed to worry about “spin”;)

You can fool most of the people most of the time you know.

    LAXALT

I’m sure I read that somewhere and the suggestion in the article was that his performances for Lech were likely to lead to them taking up the option .

Pleased for the player , I never thought he was really right for us .

    4pm…..100pc.

For by all that…..Mark Walrets was a brilliant player.

Beside the Fergus McCann booing, that’s my most embarrassing moment for CFC fans.

    KevJ…..c’mon man….Viv Anderson?….Geeze peace.

    ……

Celtic fans did this in 4 games which I attended, which will see these words be twisted into something else entirely on here later by some useful idiot as having been my fault that these things happened.

    Laurie Cunningham at Parkhead 1980.

Viv Anderson at City Ground Nottingham and at Parkhead in 1983.

Mark Walters at Parkhead in 1988.

Fergus McCann was a sly sleekit wee Tory man from Canada.

His treatment of Wim Jansen and Murdo MacLeod whilst trying to stop the Hun 10 in a row, but telling them they were going to be sacked anyway, win or lose the title, was sack the board territory.

Then taking 3 months to bring in Dr Jo, just after the transfer window was closed was sacking material.

    BUT.

What NEVER gets mentioned anywhere in Celtic cyberspace is this.

For the first time EVER, Celtic fans had to pay for the next seasons tickets, before we were into the month of May, in the stop the Hun 10 season run in!

    WHY?

Because if we had not stopped the Huns from winning the 10, then all of McCann’s horribleness would have been revealed, and tickets would not have sold out in huge numbers.

Season tickets are a Tory trap.

All seated stadia are a Tory trap.

Digital I.D. is a Tory trap.

    https://x.com/AwakenedOf/status/1977848069463973992#m

ALL OF THESE THINGS need to be walked back from ASAP!

McCann tried to introduce “project signings” IN 1998 during the stop the Hun 10 season.

Wim Jansen had good relations with Dortmund’s Champions league winner, Paul Lambert, who had intimated through various channels that he would sign for Celtic if that became an option.

Fergus meanwhile, was trying to tell Wim Jansen that a player from the 6 counties, Jim Magilton, would better than Champions League WINNERS Medal holder Lambo.

Wim Jansen said Lambo and no discussion about cheaper players who would have a lot to prove before being accepted by Celtic fans, AND, especially in the 10 season.

So Wim told Fergus and Jock Brown, “YOU CAN BRING AS MANY PROJECT PLAYERS IN AS YOU WANT. THEY WONT GET NEAR MY TEAM.”

That uppityness from Wim flipped Fergus over the top.

Tyrannical bullies don’t like being stood up to.

Obviously Wim had learned what happened to uppity Lou Macari, who twice defied Walter Smith teams at Ibrox with his street wisdom.

Macari with a good few million would have become a dangerous manager for Fergus to control, given Macari was educated in the Jock Stein dressing room, the BEST University ever!

Straight off of the Jungle terrace and into the Stein University, what a life these players had.

All Tories are Tyrants and bullies who are born to rule.

But there will always be a Man, or Woman, of integrity who’ll stand in their way.

Fergus McCann is not who he was made out to be.

The boos for Fergus were not loud enough imho.

It gets more difficult by the day.

    BUT.

    The Guardian?

Who made their most earnings off of Julian Assange’s revelations, then they dumped him after he was wrongfully accused of sexual assault, which was later proved that he didn’t do this horrible deed, yet NONE of his media colleagues were allowed to report that fact.

    Journalists eh.

These same Journos accused MP George Galloway of, misogyny, for standing up for JA and calling out the ENTIRE media as shills for Israel.

    Who knew.

Galloway and Assange were proved correct when the dust had settled.

But not a single apology from any of these journo propagandists.

All of these years later and still, George Galloway holds the most fears for Westminster and governments elsewhere.

What does that say about every other Politician?

Fair play to the proper Journos on the Grayzone.
