The spreadsheet on file at every club

550

There is a spreadsheet on file at every club with the anticipated sale value of each player on it.  This value often has nothing to do with how important the player is to the club, or even how good he is, it is a hard assessment of what the market will pay.

Kristoffer Ajer, for example, could end up at a tier one club next season, but his price tag will be inhibited by only having 12 months left on his Celtic contract.  James Forrest is also a talent and has two years remaining on his current deal.  James, though, will turn 30 in July.  The time Spurs managers travel to Glasgow to watching his passed.

Younger players with plenty on their contracts are not assured money either.  Ismaila Soro (22) has three years left on his contract but the spreadsheet at Celtic is unlikely to have a figure as high as we paid for him last year; Ismaila just has not played enough football to merit a reflective increase in value.

Market health is also a factor.  There is seemingly endless supply of debt to those tier one clubs, but the game in most of Europe is on its knees.  What would we expect from a French club for the likes of Olivier Ntcham, after the collapse of their TV deal?

Which brings us Patryk Klimala.  I like Patryk, his willingness to show for the ball and bust a lung to get back and find space was a refreshing change of pace from much of what we watched this season.  Various coaches didn’t think he had what it takes for Celtic, so his chances were limited and an exit increasingly likely.

We paid £3.5m for him; I expected to collect around a third of that when he moved on, not the entire sum we got back from New York Red Bulls.  That’s nothing, to the £10m Bayer Leverkusen paid for Jeremie Frimpong in January, a player I wanted dropped and replaced.  The keeper of Celtic’s spreadsheet has enjoyed updating a column this week.

I wonder if New York or Bayer want a goalkeeper with Champions League and European international experience?

  1. Turkeybhoy – I felt the same about Barkas, he was dropped for the same quality of performances that have seen others retain their places. One thing I will say is that I don’t really remember him making a really good save, but equally I don’t recall him failing to make an easy one. What I remember is a bunch of 60:40 shots, where you’d expect him to save around 40% of them. Each time I’d shrug and think “On another day he’s saving that”, but that save never came.

I still think he deserves a better chance. This season’s stats for the two goalies below, they’re so similar you’d think maybe (as you state) this isn’t where the core problem lies.

    Barkas

    App – 13, conceded – 10, clean sheets – 6

    0.77 goals conceded per game

    Bain

    App – 15, conceded – 13, clean sheets – 6

    0.87 goals conceded per game

For comparision, Forster in season 19/20

    App – 28, conceded – 17, clean sheets – 14

    Goals conceded per game 0.6

  2. A related explanation could be?🤷🏼‍♂️

Our sometimes sh1tey defence of last season necessitated a really good goalkeeper to be outstanding at times.

Our even/much more sh1tey defence of this season has left chasms that three lesser keepers cannot fill (unless perhaps we tape them together and play them all at once?)

    Made me chuckle. cheers!

  4. I would love us to be involved in a British League….British League? Of course it wouldn’t be, not even in name. It would be the EPL with a couple of bolt-ons.

This was latched on to by the dross that we call the Scottish media, when talk of the ESL surfaced. It filled columns and broadcast airspace usually taken up by the parochial tripe generated in Scotland.

There would be an uprising by all English clubs outside the “big six’ akin to, but greater than, what happened last week & this, if the big two in Scotland were given leave to parachute into the top-tier down south.

For the medium term we are stuck here and have to make the best of it. Making the best of it means recognising the fact that if one of the ‘big two’ in Scotland were not around, Scottish football would wither on the vine.

Going forward and ‘holding our noses’ we must accept that successes for the ‘big two’ in EUFA competitions acyually benefits Celtic and our game as a whole. Already we have seen that even a short period Euro success at Ibrox has produced a CL group place for 22/23.

Let’s look forward and make sure we are the top dogs – if we are & if they have some Euro success, so whay, it will benefit us on overall UEFA coefficient and easier qualification.

  5. TIMHORTON on 23RD APRIL 2021 4:01 PM

Part of the defence is the midfield and that is a huge problem.

Defence starts from the forward line, and we’ve all seen the effort of OE this season, plus A.N.Others, ally that with a failing and floundering for speed midfield, then onto Full/Wing backs who can’t defend, then it’s easy to see why we had trouble with teams going at us this season, por cierto.

  6. Aipple 😉

    Timhorton

Agreed. We could also add our attackers to our list of defensive weaknesses. The only striker with the inclination or physique to hassle opposing defenders in possession just left toon!

  7. To all those who offered condolences etc to the family & friends of Ed Reilly aka NCTim who passed away recently, I’d like to pass on the sincere gratitude of the family. I circulated all of it to the family & his adult grandchildren in particular were “blown away” by the sentiments of so many posters on CQN. His widow Liz, his children Mark & Anna made a point of asking me to thank you all.

Ed died on April 9 after a very short illness & his funeral service was on Saturday April 17 at Holy Cross Church in Kernersville, North Carolina. His ashes were interred at the Garden of Remembrance in the church grounds to the sound of bagpipes playing a selection of Celtic FC songs.

I said a few words after the interment & shared some stories of the daft stuff that Ed & I got up to over the last 10 years. A bit like “Last of the Summer Wine” stuff, but there was a lot of laughter to help balance out the tears. At the end of the formalities the family invited me to stay as they conducted their own ritual, one that would have met with Ed’s approval: his grandson opened a bottle of Jamieson’s & we all had a wee toast to Ed.

Thanks once again & take care

  8. Paul67…I rarely if ever post but I’ve been here since Black Sunday. I doubt you’ll even see this but if you do; I’m begging you, please fix the adverts and the disable adblocker problems. I suffer from depression amongst other things and laid my father to rest earlier today (raising his favourite Glayva in his honour has given me the courage to post this). This site has seen me through the hardest of times, every poster, every comment, every discussion, every…everything. This place is my outlet, please sir, please think again about the ads. I’m sure I’m not alone in being available to fund any shortfall if you bin tha ads.

To everyone past and present that posts, please keep doing so…for me and I’m guessing many others it helps them cope. Much love to all…

  9. Bada, have you tried switching off java script for cqn only, in site settings? Works for me although I do still have to log back in once in a while.

BADA, I use Adblock+ (on all the time) and have Java disabled. Never have any problem logging on. Don’t know why that should be different.

  13. EMERALDBEE

Same here – Java disabled, Adblocker Plus, but I, like many others, including BADA, SAINTSTIVS et al, have constant log in problems, and are frequently papped off when we refresh the page. Happens on all devices, all browsers, and all operating systems. And why the need to log on? We don’t need to log on to Sentinel Celts, KDS, ETIMS, PMcG and a zillion other sites. Very frustrating.

I’m not a fan of Celts for change, they should defer and support bigger stronger Celtic fan organisations, at least they are speaking up so fair enough

Hows the fan forum going David, remind us of all those brainstorming sessions and what was achieved ?

Not all Celtic FC fan organisations are the same some have different levels of interaction with Celtic PLC, BUT this is not Germany unlike German society and replicated in their football clubs workers fans have a real say and an influence, sadly were the PLC is concerned Celtic fans are powerless.

The Celtic trust are still waiting for a response from Celtic FC on their added value share issue proposal BUT then there is such a huge backlog of stuff waiting to be done at Celtic FC, before I thought of having a go at any fan organisation i could not look past the level of incompetence with what our club has been governed by within the PLC, a shambles doesn’t cover it

Dear God that lead article, if that Moneyball database nonsense is what our de facto DOF/CEO uses to pick players for Celtic FC for next season, forget it the league 21/22 is over

David tune into the debate below hopefully it matches your standards pal

I use Firefox as my browser with Adblock Plus from Firefox – still asked every time to disable it, but just click no and on I go. Not perfect, but..

  18. We’ve waited for years; this week, the bubble burst. Six epl clubs hung their dirty laundry out and told all and sundry they can’t sustain what they are. We survived the biggest cheatin sporting history.

  19. please understand that this blog is the unofficial voice of peter lawell. Whilst the true celtic supporting bloggers create interesting arguments about the team we all love, this bottom line is that CQN is a money making blog ,same as the plc is a money making business which just so happens to be in the football realm. . the bottom line is £££££. The editors could not care less about your opinion, as long as you click. Re the total nonsense about this moneyball exercise.

moneyball creates money, and we are using it to stay afloat, not to advance the team. The bottom line, thats all that matters. Nothing else. so ,where do we go from here?

  20. Another CQN article re the players we’re selling and how clever we are?

    Jesus wept!
