The standard we now dare aspire to

Consider this: with Celtic certainties to win the league, they have now been given three consecutive home Scottish Cup games, against Brechin, Partick and Morton, on the road to perhaps becoming the first club to retain the treble in Scottish football history. For so many years home cup draws were as elusive as the outcome to SFA review results into Rangers Uefa licence in 2011, but here we are.

The big picture from the weekend: Despite things still being far from flowing on the park, I’m delighted with the win over Partick Thistle. Of the two cup games this week, the Thistle game was the most important. An aggregate win over Zenit would flood more euros into the Celtic Park coffers, but progress of (perhaps only) one more round in the Europa League will be forgotten long before the outcome of this season’s Scottish Cup.

In his first five seasons in charge, Jock Stein won five league titles and five League Cups, losing three Scottish Cup games during that period. This is the standard we now dare aspire to.

Indeed but he is part of a whole media industry who think if they don’t mention it, it never happened.

  2. Good evening Bhoys from a bitterly cold central Éire. I got back yesterday from another great weekend in Glasgow, plenty of beer was consumed, singing the rebs until the wee hours and it was great to see some good mates at Parkhead.

We ultimately got the win we all wanted against the Jags but that performance won’t be near good enough Thursday. Big Jozo looked way off the pace but I still rate him and he deserves another chance. Jamesy Forreat is a joy to watch in full flight and he’s having a great season. Great to get another home draw in the next round also.

  3. Jozo is an enigma, played for Croatia from u/14 through to u/21, made his debut for Zagreb at 19 and after 52 games for them joined us at 21 for an undisclosed fee, this is relatively young for an experienced centre half which we really need. One for the future was the thought at the time, similar to young Kris.

Shortly after making his debut for us he suffered an ankle injury following that up with knee ligament problems which saw him out initially for 6 weeks but turned into the rest of the season with only 17 appearances to his name, he also announced that he had been playing for 6 weeks with a fractured right knee.

In the interim and just before his ligament injury we signed big Erik for 1.5m, who was 5 years older and more like it for a senior defender and with only half a season under his belt he dons the hoops or equivalent 18 times.

After spending 9 weeks recovering in Belgrade and would be returning fit for the new season on 30 August 2016, contrary to his prior announcement, Jozo travelled to Turin to have a medical with Torino.

Despite allegedly passing his medical, it was announced the following day that the move was off as the two clubs could not agree a fee which had been prearranged before PL made the trip, Jozo stated afterwards that he was “completely healthy and fit” and was entirely focused on the challenge ahead with us and on 18 September he made his long-awaited return to action as a substitute in our 2–2 draw with ICT.

Once he re-established himself in the team he formed a solid partnership in central defence alongside Erik which saw usc go on a run of nine clean sheets, winning the SLC 3-0 over the sheep where he made the pass for Tom Rogic’s opening goal and also helping us tae the treble. It looked as if we had at last a reliable central defence partnership.

That summer though he turned his back on Croatia and chose to represent his “mother” country Bosnia and Herzegovina citing frustration at the lack of opportunities to play for the land of his birth although he has since twice pulled out of the squad due to injury. On 11 September 2017 he signed new four-year contract with us expiring June 2021.

Meanwhile Erik, the more dependable damaged knee ligaments in a EUFA qualifier which prevented him playing for three months, in January he returned to FC Midtjylland, on loan until the end of the season hoping to push his way back into the Danish national squad ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

I feel that we’ve not seen the last of Erik as he seemingly turned down a chance of a permanent transfer elsewhere. Incidentally, in his short spell with us, only 1 ½ seasons really, he won 2 Titles, 2 SC and 1 LC badges. Jozo in 3 seasons has 2 Titles, 1 SC and 2 LC.

I don’t mean to be disparaging about Jozo here, there is a Croatian side to my family and I would desperately love him to be a success, but there’s someting no right here with him. Also, dealing with players from that part of the world is fraught with intrigue and suspicion, if my memory serves me well we were in for a young Croat from Zagreb, I believe it might have been krankie, PL walked out of negotiations several times as he stated they kept changing agents, he eventually went tae England via Split as after we pulled out nobody would go near Dynamo.

When I came here to retire I never in my wildest dreams thot I would end up doing what I m doing, they get a bit trying at times but at the end of the day wouldn’t change it.

Names…..we have a Saoirse, Eireann, Devlin, Murphy, Derry, Ira, Farrell, Constance, Lourdes, Sisu………these are our permanent pack, we have in for re homing a Ziggy, Tansy and a Robin, but we will prob keep the Robin fella and find him a name that sounds like Robin in keeping with the Irish theme, he was shot and his right leg is sort of hanging off, we will give it a while longer to see if the bones will knit together, shotguns do some damage to a dogs bones btw, but am not hopeful, they cost a small fortune to feed in a week, most are on the large side so you can imaging the amount of food they eat, as I said, wouldn’t change it for the world, they are our world.

In my view Jozo is still our best CH, yes a nightmare on Saturday, but he is only 23, and not really huge amount of experience

He will benefit from a Compper next to him

Any idea on the view of why Dickson got back onto/ into FtSFA, and why still there ??

The same guy who was there representing a deceased club on the FtSFA and now it’s zombie re-incarnation, and whose memory appears to struggle with clarity – allegedly

Interesting that you think Broadfoot is still being paid by the SFA, presumably to keep the nothing to see its the paranoid tims narrative going,do they publish accounts of their spending for scrutiny with recipients named, as you indicate two have gone, hopefully an full investigation will take place sooner rather than later, surely if other chairman know and understand the conduct of the SFA they cannot stick to the move on argument.

  9. £100m TV money a year and you’ve got Gareth Barry chasing Eden Hazard, and West Brom wonder where it’s all went wrong.

  10. As far as Centre halfs are concernedI wondered if Tosin Adarabioyo regrets staying on at Man City.

He played in one FA cup tie in 2015/16

He played in 2 European and one League cup tie in 2016/17

and so far has played 2 League Cup ties and 1 European tie this year.

Hardly an upward career path. The boy needs to play.

SFA were still using Broadfoot after he left, his replacement was rubbish apparently.

Broadfoot left SFA to work for a PR mob. When speaking for the SFA he ain’t doing it fur nuthin.

Re your earlier post on Doncaster and the way out – something using the Traverso letter has been suggested where it might take hold.

Depends on what comes out of the Compliance Officer investigation but it’s a near perfect solution in the circumstances.

No idea how Dickson has escaped scrutiny. In a conversation with a legal chap who would know more about such matters than an innocent like me, the term used was Golden Boy.

Me? I think that if he is not the murder of Scottish football he knows

    a) who he is.

    b) where the bodies are buried.

TET … I didn’t realize that you also had a pup named Derry …. I called her that because she was oak coloured

funny thing is my pal, from Armagh, spoke to her in Irish, and she followed all his commands, better than she did mine in English!

for fun, I did try to teach her to bark when someone would call her Londonderry, but she never quite got it …

and everytime she needed to go for a walk, my dad used to say he was going to free Derry …

I miss that girl. As a couple of you guys have said, they are family.
