The standard we now dare aspire to

374

Consider this: with Celtic certainties to win the league, they have now been given three consecutive home Scottish Cup games, against Brechin, Partick and Morton, on the road to perhaps becoming the first club to retain the treble in Scottish football history. For so many years home cup draws were as elusive as the outcome to SFA review results into Rangers Uefa licence in 2011, but here we are.

The big picture from the weekend: Despite things still being far from flowing on the park, I’m delighted with the win over Partick Thistle. Of the two cup games this week, the Thistle game was the most important. An aggregate win over Zenit would flood more euros into the Celtic Park coffers, but progress of (perhaps only) one more round in the Europa League will be forgotten long before the outcome of this season’s Scottish Cup.

In his first five seasons in charge, Jock Stein won five league titles and five League Cups, losing three Scottish Cup games during that period. This is the standard we now dare aspire to.

  4. Evenin/Mornin Ghuys… can I ask a question, (by all means shoot me doon If i’m simply stupid).. With all the induction and shuffling of the brothers at the sfa (112 hampden ludge) right now.. where was the current president alan mcrea, who was also president of cove rangers, (takin over I think from campbell ogilvie) in 2012, when there was a vacancy in the scottish league 2.. when cove rangers (nickname ‘the wee rangers’) are now pushin very very hard to enter the league this time, through the play offs.? I seem to remember 2006 (I think) when Gretna went bust and there was a scramble to take there place.

Will be grateful for any feedback.

    Cheers and HH.

You know the mileage I’m gonna get out of this one?

  7. Evening/morning all. Not been on for a wee while. That`s me just home from the pub. Hope everyone is keeping well. A wee question for you. Does the word “publicly” still exist ? All I see these days is “publically”. WTactualF is going on here?

  8. AndyR53, can’t remember the circumstances of 2006 that you speak off. But I remember when Rangers went bust in 2012 and were ‘only’ allowed to begin playing professional football at the bottom tier of the SFL. They done a place out for the club who were due to get promoted from the Lowland/Highland ? league. Can’t remember which club it was. But similar to Cove Rangers I guess.

There was no uproar on behalf of the small club. Such was the desperation to get ‘them’ operating in some capacity. But if I remember correctly there was not much challenge from the wee club themselves. Think they found it too much of a financial and operational burden. Then again, maybe they got a sweetener?

  9. JIMTHETIM53..

Yea, thats what I’m trying to sort in my head, was there any protest or challenge to sevco being placed in league 2.

Just seems that cove ‘the wee rangers’ are mounting a very serious effort this year to gain promotion… new stadium, all planned out who they will meet in the play offs before meeting Cowdenbeath. Anthin to do with alan mcrea??

  10. Andy,

The leagues below level four are classed as “non-league football”, meaning they are outside the Scottish Professional Football League and are played on a regional not a national basis. The Lowland League is parallel to the Highland League. These divisions created level five on the pyramid and from season 2014–15 the two league winners have played off against each other, with the winner then playing the team finishing 10th in League Two in a promotion and relegation playoff. Below the Lowland League is the East of Scotland Football League (13 clubs, which includes a reserve team, in a now-merged single league structure) and the South of Scotland Football League (15 clubs in a single division) – with promotion and relegation into the Lowland League.

    Andy, does this help?

Apart from couple of wee posts…all the rest from my effin phone tonight….as always. Which I hate.

    Never liked that laptop…..

  13. Well, 8 pages, that means phone on its side to change pages now.

I said yesterday it was “ mildly irritating “

I’m elevating the status today to “ somewhat annoying”

  14. JIMTHETIM53…

Yea, the years you mention, 2014 – 2015 when the play offs were introduced have filled the blanks for me. My paranoia, ( and life experiences) suggested something rotten surrounding the president of the sfa and cove (the wee rangers) being one and the same, hence no challenge in 2012.

    Cheers and HH.
