The state of the bottom of the table

121

Aberdeen’s season fell off a cliff after they met Celtic in the League Cup semifinal in November.  More recently, form has picked up.  They have lost only one of their last 11 games, a 5-1 drubbing at Celtic Park, winning seven in that time.  That puts them in reasonable form for the battle for European places, before attempting to deny Celtic a treble at Hampden next month.

The scale of St Johnstone’s collapse on Sunday suggests they are too fragile to mount a survival campaign.  They are five points adrift of Dundee, but it’s Ross County and Kilmarnock (six ahead of St Johnstone) who are more likely to capitulate.  Killie were equally poor a week earlier at Celtic Park.  The prospect of making the top flight bigger by adding yet more cannon fodder is not appealing to fans of competitive sport, or TV broadcasters.

Our pal Conaire12, Fr Charlie Cavanagh, passed away yesterday – in good company!  He recently retired from a parish in Greenock and was with the team in Lisbon in 67.  A good pal to many here, he will be missed.  Rest in Peace, Charlie.

  1. Boondock – Always love reading your posts. Wish I was good enough to walk in your shoes back then but couldn’t get further than the Juniors. Big Billy is the definition of a Celtic legend.

Well, no, it isn’t certain. Just as it isn’t certain that the quarter-finals at Wimbledon will be higher quality than the first round, but I think it would be highly likely.

Yes, we would probably still keep winning the league but I believe a bigger league would make it closer.

In a “typical” season (and of course every season is different and will throw up anomalies) Celtic will play Aberdeen four times and pick up 10-12 points. Sevco will pick up 7-9 points.

Now, take away two of those games and replace them with two games against Raith. Celtic still pick up 10-12 points. Probably a slightly higher chance of 12 but essentially no real difference. Sevco however go up to 9-10.

Now repeat that for Hibs/Morton, Hearts/Partick and Dundee Utd/Arbroath. Celtic finish the season on more or less the same points total as now, but Sevco go up by maybe 8-10 points.

    Saint Stivs – thank you.

As expected but confirmation bias is a dangerous thing.

Always good to hear from people who know what they are talking about. Respect.

    Basically – very early days.

As for Everton’s new stadium – here comes the confirmation bias again but I suspect it is simply down to size of the site (it’s tight for space) and cost (they are tight for cash).

Still a 33% capacity uplift from Goodison.

    Boondock Saint.

    That loss at Tannadice …

… was that the one we’re McCarthy fluffed the back pass on the half turn to the keeper and someone nipped in?

  8. Wild card here! Just found out that, due to sudden family reasons, will be finding myself in Chorley this weekend. Anyone know of a likely venue to show the game? Found a hotel in Preston, but have to be in the locality of Chorley for possible ‘taxi’ reasons.

    Thanks

I just have to say though, plenty of our fans make it easy for these jornos to use the “tedious, boring, crab like fitba as a mantra,

so boring they leave on 75 minutes even when they are 4 up.

then fill the hotlines and call ins with ludcrous commentary as if their opinion counts.

  15. Sorry lhads but you’re wrong. That was a stonewall penalty. We would be screaming for it for Celtic.

  19. If it ever happens, The South Stand being upgraded I reckon there will be no shortage of fans wanting a seat there, along with other areas being on the agenda,

  20. I’ve not posted or asked in a while regarding this but where are the clubs original 54 League flags?

Should these not be on display and and on show on the Celtic way and at the pitch side when we clinch our 55th and thereafter be on displays within the stadium.

Seeing your monicker reminded me of a chat Mrs Quad and I had the other day about our last O/S holiday at the Rasa Sayang. We read that the Equatorial (near the Golf Club) was set to re-open in 2025 and I’d also had a brill break there preCovid. Nice part of the world !

  24. You want a Treble?

    Look back to season 1968 – 1969

The greatest Treble in Celtic History

And losing out that same season to the last Italian team, a great team, to win the European Cup, until 1985…..

AC Milan in the quarter-finals, a team which went on to defeat Manchester United, and an up and coming Ajax Amsterdam in the Final. A great great team.

In the Scottish Cup Final the Rangers support conjured up two chants, one……AC Milan AC, ….. a very clever play on Auld Lang Syne, and the adoption, for the first time, of the song Wandering Star, from the film Paint Your Wagon, or at least a bastardised version of Lee Marvin’s hit single…….

To no avail, when crushed by the mighty Celtic team of the late 1960s……4-0

That is what you call a Treble,……all won in April 1969

  27. Celtic Mac @ 12.33,

I’m sure AC Milan said after winning the big Cup that Celtic were their most difficult opponents. They hammered Ajax 5-1, if memory serves., in the Final.
