The story Celtic are telling transfer targets right now

204

Between making his international debut in 2017 and joining Celtic over four years later, Josip Juranovic started five games for Croatia.  In the 18 months since he became a became automatic first pick for his country and a standout at the World Cup.

The Daizen Maeda story is even more stark.  He started one game for Japan (in 2019) before becoming a Celtic player, getting to the World Cup and beating two of the tournament favourites.

This is the story Celtic are telling transfer targets right now: ‘Look at what we did for Jura and Daizen, come to Celtic and we will do the same for you’.

Brazil might feel like the big one, but the next one is always the big one.  Best wishes to Josip and Croatia tonight.

  1. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Happy Birthday Tony Curran.

A great bloke and a diehard Celt.

Out there in crazy town spreading the word.

  2. Alistair Johnston

My mate who lives in Vancouver and is a coach says this about Johnston

‘bit of a raw player, late developer; but fit, strong and is clearly ready to improve so hope they treat him well’

  3. AN TEARMANN at 12:04 PM

That is cold mate. We’ll ge getting to that and colder with wind chill soon. The winter coats are well and truly oot.

  4. CONEYBHOY at 12:09 PM re: Alistair Johnston

My boss lives in Nashville and rates the lad. So him in the flesh many times and reckons we’ll enjoy him.

    How much now for Jura?

  5. Yes Paul67, a great story to tell…

Ange was pragmatic about Kyogo, Hatate and Jota not being selected for their world cup squads

He said they’d have to get better and he was right, interesting Meada and Juranovic might not be the stars of the show but both do exactly what it says on the tin – crucial in current football

Croatia in the final will be an incredible feat, it is a real possibility, especially if they can survive the ninety.

Maybe a step too far for Morocco but with an Arab crowd behind them and the grit and determination they’ve shown anything can happen.

    Hail Hail

  6. Good afternoon CQN from a very cold but sunny Auld Reekie.

Back from our winter break, suitably refreshed and fighting fit.

Good to see Tom Rogic finding the net for WBA last night. Also delighted to watch the Alistair Johnston press conference. Interesting that Celtic had him on board BEFORE he went to Qatar with Canada. I like how the club’s recruitment of players has moved up a gear since Ange’s arrival. No messing about.

Looking forward to Pittodrie on Sarurday and the much anticipated return of Captain Callum. As usual, no chance of a ticket. I haven’t been to Pittodrie since we had the beach end. Henrik scored on my last visit.

Art of War – Sincere condolences on the loss of your father. Take care Sir.

Big Jimmy – Good to see you still trouncing the Turf Accountants.

    Hail Hail

“Brazil might feel like the big one”

Yes Paul, I remember thinking Leeds was the big one back in 1970. That didn’t end well.

  8. Paul; can’t wait for the day when that story changes, not to what we can do for players’ international hopes…

But what glories and medals the whole squad achieves in either of the big x2 European comps.

Great story to tell players? “ You’ll play in front of 60,000 supporters but as soon as a wee rich club come in, we’ll let you go “ next up a queue of wantaway players, outside the manager’s office, some them barely having tasted success.

Not a feel good supporter vibe by any means, we can’t sell them all, there’ll be nobody left. Celtic have set a high bar with recent signings a ‘hands off message’ wouldn’t go wrong.

Juranovic must be the only exception to the rule this January, we may or may not not need him for the second half of the season, but we’re still light elsewhere. No point in building a gap then selling all the builders.

Folk getting role of chairman and ceo all confused again on here.

To be clear Peter lawwell is the chairman and not the ceo. Different roles and different responsibilities. Go Google it.

While you’re at it Google the FRC’s UK Corporate Governance Code, which Celtic claim to adhere to.

Read what it says about the criteria for non executive directors.

Consider whether Peter Lawwell’s appointment is in line with the Code.

Then consider how confident you should be about just how strictly the Board member will adhere to their allotted role titles.

    ————————————

Anyone that thinks Lawwell’s return will see him giving an Ian Bankier type contribution hasn’t thought it through properly.

As Ernie points out, for the board to go to the bother of possibly breaching the FRC’s UK Corporate Governance Code tells you that they havent appointed Lawwell to sit and twiddle his thumbs as chairman.

I’ve read comments that he could be returning in order to oversee the CBC cases but i’m sure that this will be dealt with by lawyers and insurers.

CQN is different from other Celtic sites as almost ever other site looks at the club from the football fan viewpoint.

This site I regard it as how its seen from the board and company.

I do think P67 is a fan, but I also think the fortunes of the football club come secondary to how the financial aspect of the club does.

I think that is what really floats his boat.

  12. Lambert14

He was stick of for the Chairman’s post, he exited the CEO position and onto the Football Club Board, he was never away and he will in my opinion interfere and wreck progression, it is his way or no way.

  13. QUADROPHENIAN @ 12:42 PM, & BSR @ 12:48 PM,

Yes, it is indeed a “strory” that needs managing.

You win trophies, play in front of the best supports on the planet and get to compete in the UCL – is obviously what the main points are

Loved when they asked AJ about what happens when his five year contract was up and he said hopefully sign for another five – we need players with this attitude as well as the Mo Bangura’s

    Its inevitable.

A leopard never changes its spots.

  15. Lambert 14

If he was never away from the Board- why did he not interfere during the past 6 months.

Did he need an official position to fulfil DD’s instructions to the club?

Or could he not have prevented Ange and Michael Nicholson by telling them all this would be dismantled upon his official return.

It doesn’t make a lot of logical sene to me.

  16. After 10 days relaxing in sunnier climes, I had hoped the PL hysteria would have dissipated somewhat.

    How wrong I was.

How do they switch off at night?

    Till Saturday then.

    Ciao

  17. Good article Paul67. Didn’t know that Juranovic had so few Croatia caps before he joined us.

One of the hard sells to potential recruits is the perception of SPFL quality, with international caps and a stepping stone to a bigger league adversely affected.

Like it or not buying low and selling high (at the right time) is a requirement for our model just now.

World Cup success stories from our players clearly support that model.

Disagree with hoping Croatia win though.

I always back Argentina at the start of every World Cup and this one is no different!

I have met Paul many times . His love of Celtic the football team is always far more in evidence than any emotional attachment to the ( important) financial side of the Club.

Alpine truck sold back in 78. Sort of a Lilt flavour which was a bit like the Argentina top

  21. PARKHEADCUMSALFORD @ 12:16 PM,

And much of the work in improving all of our players has to be down to our manager. Long may he stay at Celtic Park.

Yes, this is crucial, Ange must be backed and on a long term basis, the culture of bringing in players with the right attitude, developing them as individuals and players.

Improving the squad season after season and doing that through the B team and all age groups is crucial.

    Hail Hail

  22. Whooooooahhhh,it the Ghost of PL,past, present, terrorising plenty again .Dont mention the future ghost, they already know that it will ruin the club.Aarrgghh, how can we face another 10 years of Titles,Trebles, happy fans.

    We’re doomed ah tell ye,doomed.

Good afternoon all from Morrisons car park, Newlandsfield. Mrs BRRB has gone missing, last seen at the sweetie shelves. 🙄

  24. Neither of these guys were kids when they came to Celtic either.

We’re in a very happy place at the moment

  25. Bit of a tough one to kickstart the campaign – cold, drab wintry Aberdeen at lunchtime with a bunch of huns (McLean and co) in charge.

Expect 2 days of BS after the Beale bounce and Hibs pishness Thursday so we’ll have to score a few to avoid the vagaries of officialdom as always.

Let’s keep it at -9 for der hun until the Ibrox clash where we can put them back in their box.

  26. Thanks Coneybhoy – might buy a bottle from my winnings….
