The Talismanic Trip and the Holy Grail

287

Celtic’s world has changed greatly since that moment during the first half at Ibrox on 2 January, with the team well on top, the commentator mentioned they were off to Dubai after the game.  Celtic’s dominance did not produce a goal and the game was lost.  In the days that followed, a second lockdown was announced, Dubai’s status in the Green Corridor was rescinded, Christopher Jullien became infected and 13 players were forced to isolate.  The dominoes continued to fall with Hibs added-time equalise, while we await the outcome against Livingston.

We knew Celtic were off to Dubai for weeks before the post-match flight.  Personally, I did not bat an eyelid at the prospect.  Very few of us did, remarkably so, considering the angst expressed post-defeat, post First Minister’s “I don’t know, but…” innuendo.  After event-ism is often fertile.

I have always thought it is the manager’s job to ask for what is in the interests of the football department irrespective of wider consequence.  Of course Neil wanted to go to Dubai, last season’s trip is seen as crucial to winning the title.  Similarly, it is Peter Lawwell’s job to ensure that what the football department gets is only what is in the best interests of the club, and on occasion, wider society.

A public apology from Peter is a rare thing, so we can be sure where responsibility lies on this matter.  He should have said “No”, but like so much of what has gone wrong recently, wider considerations were set aside in pursuit of the Holy Grail.

With Celtic playing well and the title still in their own hands, Peter was never going to stop the Talismanic Trip, not this season, anyway.  Would I have said “No”?  Would you?  It is an easy question to answer on 14 January.  Reality is, I am as confilcted by pursuit of the Holy Grail as much as anyone.  I know I would cross lines that would normally be observed, so would we all.  Maybe this would have been one, who knows?

Leadership involves making difficult calls and apologising when you miss them.  This is not Peter’s first mistake and despite the political grandstanding it permitted, it is not remotely his most onerous.  History may regard blind pursuit of the Holy Grail as more consequential.

If we achieve all of that chances are they will extend the contracts of our current management / coaching team.

There’s a bit of confusion here.

If someone claims they can’t wear a mask for health reasons that’s it. No one can challenge them. They don’t have to provide evidence of any sort.

The ‘card’ you’re talking about is just a bit of kidology to make people feel better if they are ever challenged. It isn’t proof of anything, because no proof is required.

The whole thing is a nonsense.

“you can download a medical exemption card on line without presenting any medical evidence”

Absolutely Shocking – no wonder we cant get a handle on this virus, whoever approved this idea should be fired.

There’s no way that in a pandemic any government would be adding to the workload of our hard pressed GPs (no, seriously) by asking them to provide medical evidence for an exemption certificate, so it is what it is.

There should be no exemption for wearing a face covering in a public enclosed space such as a supermarket.

If your application had your name, postcode, DOB etc, I’m sure from that they can access your medical records to determine eligibility,

    Also FAO ERNIE…

I DID have to provide my name, address, D.O.B. on the small application Form Online.

If I remember I did have to CONSENT to info being shared etc…so MAYBE ROCK TREE is correct about the Scot Gov medical Officer obtain Medical Proof….although it was ALL done with 24 hours as when I received the Email and advised to Download the Card firstly.

It was all done so quick, thats why I have doubts as to whether any Medical Proof from my GP was actually sought….It also TRUE that I was NOT asked for the contact details of my GP either ?

    Cheers Bhoys.

  10. About masks and exemptions, if you go into a shop you’re entering private property and, just as you don’t have to prove why you‘re not wearing a mask, the shopkeeper doesn’t have to tell you why they’re refusing you service and they have the right to have you leave.

  11. BIG JIMMY on 14TH JANUARY 2021 5:55 PM

Medical records are not shared as freely or easily as that.

The certificate doesn’t have any legal status, it’s just to minimise embarrassment if you’re ever asked why you’re not wearing a mask. Well intentioned but open to abuse.

  12. On a more serious point, does anyone agree that we might have been better served by having an actual medical doctor at the head of our medical department? I can’t help but feel that a doctor might have been the voice of reason that put paid to the Dubai trip.

True, but they can’t discriminate on the grounds of disability, which they would be at risk of doing.

I’m sure under data protection you would have to ticks box allowing people to access your records

  15. I filled in the Application Form for the exemption Card on Tuesday Morning. I received the email on Wednesday morning/afternoon advising me to Download the Card.

I then received the Excemption card also by Post this Morning ( Thursday). So I have Card that i can hold obviously, and the Card Downloaded also on my Phone.

It was precisely at this club that he earned the nickname ‘Hunskelper’, which is a kind of ‘honorary title’ that Catholic fans give to their players for their performance at the club, especially in matches against their eternal rival, Rangers. It is derived from the terms ‘hun’, which designates the fans of the blue box and ‘skelp’, which is hitting”.

Seriously though, I feel very sorry for him. He’s a Celtic fan who’s not suited to the style of football that Celtic play and he took the chance to live the dream. I blame whoever thought it was a good fit for Shane to play in a team with our style of play. Sadly, it’s turned into a nightmare for him. I wish him the very best of luck with the rest of his career.

Well I used to think that THE Rangers were the most hated team in Scotland, but I think we seem to have outdone them this time. We can look back and say well we had permission to leave the country, but I think everyone and their aunt would have said that morally, that was the wrong thing to do and sends out the wrong message. Families every where are having to sacrifice and change their routines, so should our team. I believe that the team I support and love is drifting apart from its roots from its own people. Mr. Lawell had the chance to be really contrite yesterday and just tell the world that we effed up but he still had to go and try and justify the reasons that it worked in the past. This season has been one calamitous mistake after another. How the heck can it be that the powers that be over at Ibrox knew that this season was more important than our own caretakers. I hear people talking about that team still not being as good as what we have. Goodness gracious, they are wiping the floor with teams in Scotland as we did a few years ago. They are impressing again in Europe. Fair play to our kids the other night for taking the field but we should never have been put in that position. We had the whole summer to get things right and didn’t.

Sorry for the long rant but i’m scunnered just like the rest of you.

  22. RTB – I know

Ernie – I agree but looking after ALL staff’s lifes is as important in these times as non mask wearers.

  24. Re Furloughing the U-18s:

. They have no regular scheduled competition matches, so the Lower Level cancellation is irrelevant.

. If they are only being Furloughed now what have they been doing since March 2020?

. It is a bit rich (sic) putting them on Furlough now, when the optics are absolutely awful.

The fact that Celtic pays all its due taxes is not going to discourage anyone who wants to find another stick with which to beat us. The timing is just incredibly bad judgement – yet again.
