The tens of millions Rangers denied SPL clubs laid bare

1111

The SPL deadline for clubs to provide information on improper registration of players was six weeks ago today but the league has yet to report findings to clubs, while the chief executive rallies support to allow a Newco access to the league.

Time has expired on this policy of non-disclosure until it’s too late.

If the SPL chief executive ever tells us that Rangers fielded improperly registered players between 2000 and 2012, resulting in years of 3-0 defeats being awarded, there will be an enormous amount of anger, not only among supporters, but in boardrooms across the country, as they ponder money which was rightfully theirs but which went to Rangers – perhaps including Rangers prize money for finishing second this season.

We have made an attempt to quantify this money.  Some of the losses were easier to calculate than others.  For example, it was easy to calculate that when Rangers won the title in 2009 with improperly registered players, earning automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage, they denied Celtic £15m European earnings, plus £340k SPL prize money.  Other losses are less clear, specifically when a club was denied a place in a qualifying round for the Champions League or Uefa Cup, which they may or may not have progressed from.

We have established three figures for each club in the SPL during the season just finished, to cover the period from 2000 to 2012:

Minimum loss:
The absolute minimum each club was denied from European and SPL prize money as a result of Rangers finishing above them with ineligible players.

Weighted loss:
The figure based on Scottish clubs gaining entry to Champions League/Europa League (Uefa Cup) group stages from 20% of their qualifying campaigns (which is slightly less than trend).

Maximum loss:
The maximum a club could have achieved if it qualified for the European group stage it was denied entry to.

Out estimates take no account of the subsequent effect money has on future years.  For example, If Celtic earned an additional £15m from entering the Champions League group stage in 2009-10 their league challenge for that season would have been £15m stronger, and Rangers £15m weaker, potentially resulting in consequences in future years.

This multiplier effect would have benefited Celtic but it would be likely to have a greater effect on other clubs, some of whom would be denied the enormous percentage increase in budget automatic qualification to European group stages would have brought.

Hearts finished immediately behind Celtic and Rangers more often than any other club over the period and suffer the greatest potential losses, even more so than Celtic.  Hibernian, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Motherwell also suffered significant losses.

Several clubs got nowhere near European football over the period, and some of the 11 spent only a few years in the SPL but each club lost over £1m.

Figures for each club are:

Hearts
Maximum: £72.3m
Weighted: £16.3m
Minimum: £6.2m

Celtic
Maximum: £46.7m
Weighted: £21.9m
Minimum: £17.4m

Hibernian
Maximum: £34.8m
Weighted: £8.4m
Minimum: £3.6m

Aberdeen
Maximum: £21.1m
Weighted: £5.5m
Minimum: £2.7m

Dundee United
Maximum: £20.8m
Weighted: £5.2m
Minimum: £2.4m

Motherwell
Maximum: £16.7m
Weighted: £4.4m
Minimum: £2.1m

Kilmarnock
Maximum: £5.1m
Weighted: £1.9m
Minimum: £1.3m

Dunfermline
Maximum: £3.4m
Weighted: £1.8m
Minimum: £1.5m

Inverness
Maximum: £1.3m
Weighted: £1.3m
Minimum: £1.3m

St Johnstone
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

St Mirren
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

In the event Rangers fielded ineligible players during the period under consideration, which everyone apart from Neil Doncaster knows, and even he will be unable to deny next week, we know the following:

Rangers received a minimum of £40.9m which should have gone to the 11 other clubs, assuming each club lost all their European group stage qualifying campaigns.  This calculation does not include earnings from clubs now in the Scottish Football League, such as Hamilton Accies or Dundee.

If Scottish clubs progressed to the group stages of European competition on only 20% of their qualifying campaigns the loss would be £69.0m.

The figure for total potential losses if clubs successfully progressed to every European group stage is, as the figure for 100% failure, more illustrative than likely, but the maximum cost to the 11 SPL clubs is £224.6m.

Results will be changed, trophies can and will, be re-awarded, but these are the harsh financial consequences clubs, their lawyers and supporters, will consider when the facts are presented to them next week. The SPL executive has had six weeks to consider if there is sufficient evidence to commence disciplinary proceedings; they have failed to do so. They have failed you and every other football supporter in the land, while shamelessly pursuing an accommodation for the errant club BEFORE REVEALING THE FACTS TO YOU.

Time will be up soon, Mr Doncaster. You’ve had your chance but you have convinced no one. The people who really matter in this entire debacle are those who buy tickets for Celtic Park, Pittodrie, Easter Road, Tynecastle, Tannadice, Fir Park and the rest, they will hear the truth and read these figures. You have failed them.

You can read our calculations here. European income figures were sources from Uefa data.

Celtic’s disadvantage deepened when their winger John Doyle was sent off ten minutes into the second half for kicking the scorer, but there was an equaliser from Aitken, who was especially suited to a night of such fervour and force. Never bashful, Aitken was stimulated by the challenge of being in an outnumbered line-up.

A poster earlier yesterday put up a clip of, Christina Hendricks and, knowing you where on site at that time, asked the said poster to, “Please post some more pics of – Margaret McGill please!”

I assumed, wrongly that you would have taken the bait.

Indeed, I wondered if you had taken my post the wrog way ?

I mean, imagine anyone trying to compare, Christina Hendricks to Margaret McGill ?

Margaret, if you took the post the wrong way, I apologise.

I am convinced to this day that without Fergus Celtic would have been buried much to the delight of the huns circa 1995.

Paul67 has illustrated with arithmetic today no one in Scotland owes this shower a bean of anything least of all Celtic. Let them die.

  8. Hate crime cases rise to record level

CRIME motivated by racial and religious hatred is at its highest recorded level in Scotland.

    Alison Campsie The Herald.

Racial prejudice remains the biggest driver of hate crime in Scotland, with police reporting 4518 such charges in 2011-12 – up 8% on the year before and the highest level since 2006 when recording began. Of the latest offences, 81% of the charges resulted in a court action.

A further 897 charges with a religious aggravation were also recorded – up almost one-third on the previous 12 months with the Crown Office claiming a number of high-profile cases of sectarianism may have encouraged others to have come forward. Court action went ahead in 86% of these cases.

Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland, QC, said the increases in charges brought by police were partly due to a higher awareness of the laws in place to tackle the crimes and the greater confidence of victims to come forward. However, one equality council claimed yesterday the true figures on race crime would be much higher but some victims still feared going to the police.

Mr Mulholland said: “We would urge the public to report all hate crimes to the police. They can have confidence all such crimes will be investigated carefully and prosecuted robustly.”

The figures on crimes linked to religious prejudice do not include offences charged under the Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2010 – the flagship policy to stamp out sectarianism which was rushed through Parliament earlier this year.

It was announced yesterday that 42 charges had already been made under the new legislation since it was brought into force on March 1.

The overall figures include crimes dealt with by the The Offences (Aggravation by Prejudice) (Scotland) Act 2009, which extended powers to deal with hate crimes against the gay and transgender community and those living with a disability.

Police made 652 charges related to homophobic crimes in 2011-2012 – up from 447 the year before. In addition, police reported 68 charges motivated by an aggravation of disability, up from 48 in 2010-11.

Mohammed Razaq, executive director of the West of Scotland Regional Equality Council, said he believed the level of race crime in Scotland remained far higher than reported. He said a lack of funds for casework with hate crime victims was likely to have led to less people contacting police.

Mr Razaq also said the rise could be blamed on the recession. He added: “The first people they see that are different from them become the target. These are the people who are labelled as those who are taking away jobs. Hate crimes against visible ethnic minorities will be the highest.”

Jenny Marra, Labour’s Shadow Community Safety Minister, said: “The fact that hate crime has increased across the board will in part be due to improved reporting, but I fear these statistics, for the first time, begin to shine a light on the true scale of hate crime in Scotland.”

Strathclyde Police said on Wednesday five men and a teenager from Glasgow and East Renfrewshire had been charged in connection with anti-Semitic comments on a Facebook site.

  9. An awful lot of younger Celtic fans like yer ghood self Margaret where, unaware that…..whilst the LL waxed incoherently with Walter Myths ahem, achievements at ibrokes…..Gerry McNee was, on a weekly basis….telling the Celtic watching public that, their club was headed for the rocks IF- they failed to take note of HIS assertions that, we(Celtic FC) where heading for the rocks!!!

Now, from recollection….Fergus relied on the likes of….Gerry McNee, Hugh Keevins, Paul Cooney and, Davie Provan to, convey the message of, ‘dire-hopelessness’ to awaken the, sleep-walking contingent amongst our fans that, the removal of the, Kelly’s, White’s and Grants from the board was the ONLY way forward!

I, as a Celtic supporter will, forever be, grateful to Gerry McNee and , all those mentioned and, without whose support and, influence….things might have been so different today!

    Hail Hail

  10. According to The Herald, Celtic are weighing up a bid for Cameron Stewart, the Hull City winger.

According to the Sun we are after Candido Ramirez, Club Santos Laguna, a nineteen year old midfielder.

According to St. Francis Xavier, “What will it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?”

“Hello, could I speak to the new manager of RANGERS FC ACQUISITIONS LTD.?”… They said, “Uh… I don’t think so… wont be ready for 3 months.”

    I said, “Sokay I’ll wait.”

  13. I must afford all CQNer’s who, weren’t aware of Mr. McNee’s travails concerning our club’s plight, the innocence of their mis-information via the LL.

IMO, despite all the history with our clubs most decorated servant, McNee is and, will always be an…..interesting listen to re: ‘Our-Club’.

    Off to bed now.

  14. Kev if a player is mince. I just say so

Regarding PL. he takes EpL salary but says we can’t compete with EPL for wages , I agree with this but also think he should be on SPL CEO salary. If he pushes the boat out in transfer negotiations, it directly reduces the money in his Personel bank account

Hence the reason no top class or even 2nd class center half is on our books

To hell with all the pompous opinions that are aired on here and else-where, I think that….PL is, one of DD’s puppets in the grand scheme of things.

Do you ever stop and think why, Fergus didn’t sell his shares to a Celtic supporter like Brian Dempsey, compared to DD ?

Imo, Fergus sought mythical status…where as BD would have bought, Legendary status!

I fear for our clubs future given the huns situation!

  16. I see other sites are commenting on the meeting tonight, and yet I see no summary of the meeting here. Pourquoi?

One throwaway snippet was that there was a general confidence that there would only be one senior side playing in Glasgow for at least four or five years.

On what discussions or revelations was this based?
