The tens of millions Rangers denied SPL clubs laid bare

1111

The SPL deadline for clubs to provide information on improper registration of players was six weeks ago today but the league has yet to report findings to clubs, while the chief executive rallies support to allow a Newco access to the league.

Time has expired on this policy of non-disclosure until it’s too late.

If the SPL chief executive ever tells us that Rangers fielded improperly registered players between 2000 and 2012, resulting in years of 3-0 defeats being awarded, there will be an enormous amount of anger, not only among supporters, but in boardrooms across the country, as they ponder money which was rightfully theirs but which went to Rangers – perhaps including Rangers prize money for finishing second this season.

We have made an attempt to quantify this money.  Some of the losses were easier to calculate than others.  For example, it was easy to calculate that when Rangers won the title in 2009 with improperly registered players, earning automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage, they denied Celtic £15m European earnings, plus £340k SPL prize money.  Other losses are less clear, specifically when a club was denied a place in a qualifying round for the Champions League or Uefa Cup, which they may or may not have progressed from.

We have established three figures for each club in the SPL during the season just finished, to cover the period from 2000 to 2012:

Minimum loss:
The absolute minimum each club was denied from European and SPL prize money as a result of Rangers finishing above them with ineligible players.

Weighted loss:
The figure based on Scottish clubs gaining entry to Champions League/Europa League (Uefa Cup) group stages from 20% of their qualifying campaigns (which is slightly less than trend).

Maximum loss:
The maximum a club could have achieved if it qualified for the European group stage it was denied entry to.

Out estimates take no account of the subsequent effect money has on future years.  For example, If Celtic earned an additional £15m from entering the Champions League group stage in 2009-10 their league challenge for that season would have been £15m stronger, and Rangers £15m weaker, potentially resulting in consequences in future years.

This multiplier effect would have benefited Celtic but it would be likely to have a greater effect on other clubs, some of whom would be denied the enormous percentage increase in budget automatic qualification to European group stages would have brought.

Hearts finished immediately behind Celtic and Rangers more often than any other club over the period and suffer the greatest potential losses, even more so than Celtic.  Hibernian, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Motherwell also suffered significant losses.

Several clubs got nowhere near European football over the period, and some of the 11 spent only a few years in the SPL but each club lost over £1m.

Figures for each club are:

Hearts
Maximum: £72.3m
Weighted: £16.3m
Minimum: £6.2m

Celtic
Maximum: £46.7m
Weighted: £21.9m
Minimum: £17.4m

Hibernian
Maximum: £34.8m
Weighted: £8.4m
Minimum: £3.6m

Aberdeen
Maximum: £21.1m
Weighted: £5.5m
Minimum: £2.7m

Dundee United
Maximum: £20.8m
Weighted: £5.2m
Minimum: £2.4m

Motherwell
Maximum: £16.7m
Weighted: £4.4m
Minimum: £2.1m

Kilmarnock
Maximum: £5.1m
Weighted: £1.9m
Minimum: £1.3m

Dunfermline
Maximum: £3.4m
Weighted: £1.8m
Minimum: £1.5m

Inverness
Maximum: £1.3m
Weighted: £1.3m
Minimum: £1.3m

St Johnstone
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

St Mirren
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

In the event Rangers fielded ineligible players during the period under consideration, which everyone apart from Neil Doncaster knows, and even he will be unable to deny next week, we know the following:

Rangers received a minimum of £40.9m which should have gone to the 11 other clubs, assuming each club lost all their European group stage qualifying campaigns.  This calculation does not include earnings from clubs now in the Scottish Football League, such as Hamilton Accies or Dundee.

If Scottish clubs progressed to the group stages of European competition on only 20% of their qualifying campaigns the loss would be £69.0m.

The figure for total potential losses if clubs successfully progressed to every European group stage is, as the figure for 100% failure, more illustrative than likely, but the maximum cost to the 11 SPL clubs is £224.6m.

Results will be changed, trophies can and will, be re-awarded, but these are the harsh financial consequences clubs, their lawyers and supporters, will consider when the facts are presented to them next week. The SPL executive has had six weeks to consider if there is sufficient evidence to commence disciplinary proceedings; they have failed to do so. They have failed you and every other football supporter in the land, while shamelessly pursuing an accommodation for the errant club BEFORE REVEALING THE FACTS TO YOU.

Time will be up soon, Mr Doncaster. You’ve had your chance but you have convinced no one. The people who really matter in this entire debacle are those who buy tickets for Celtic Park, Pittodrie, Easter Road, Tynecastle, Tannadice, Fir Park and the rest, they will hear the truth and read these figures. You have failed them.

You can read our calculations here. European income figures were sources from Uefa data.

Celtic’s disadvantage deepened when their winger John Doyle was sent off ten minutes into the second half for kicking the scorer, but there was an equaliser from Aitken, who was especially suited to a night of such fervour and force. Never bashful, Aitken was stimulated by the challenge of being in an outnumbered line-up.

  8. Morning all, a Fresh Spring Day in the Chilterns…

Excellent article by Paul, superb stuff.

Noticed some questioning the legitamacy of the numbers early evening yesterday.

I think it’s not only legitimate but necessary to extrapolate the figures to show not only the advantage this potential Financial Doping gave to R@ngers but also had a negative effect it had on other teams ability to purchasing and retain players.

Despite what Andy Kerr states, RFC cherry picking the SPL’s talent is NOT doing the Clubs or the League any favours. Coming from anyone other than a R@ngers man the whole notion would sound ridiculous.

If the alleged Financial Doping did take place, in fact if you look at the plethora of RFC misdemeanours in the round, inflicted or proposed, the corrupting effect on Scottish Football is huge.

What the history of the SPL would have been who can say with any certainty? That does not mean that the effect of the damages should not be quantified.

It’s the least that can be done. What about the referees, the game’s administrators, the fixture lists etc. etc..??

How do we prove or quantify that? Dougie! Dougie! Didn’t scratch the surface.

A wee story from that Mogga season.

Dundee United were going great guns and in Nov 2009 beat us, around the same time Scotland got beat by Wales and G Burley got the Spanish Archer.

So the SFA announced as the National side did not have a competitive Matches untill next season, they were not goin to appoint a successor until nearer that time.

Now approaching mid December Celtic were narrowly top of the League, RFC have two games with DU in a week (both SPL, one rearranged).

Gordon Smith and Goerge Peat’s SFA negotiate and offer the Scotland job to Craig Levein. His DU team uncharacteristicly don’t turn up for the mid-week fixture and Rangers win 3-0. Then the pictch @ Tannadce is waterlogged for the Saturday match and it too is rearranged til after Christmas.

So Craig Levein takes up his post as Scotland Manager the day before Christmas Eve and RFC play Stewart Houston’s DU a week later and beat them 7-1.

Now then what made the SFA change their mind and why the timimg of the CL appointment?

It’s rather odd that the SFA to appoint someone just before Chritmas, even though they didn’t have a game for months and their stated aim was to wait.

Now it could be that they saw what a great job CL was doing at DU and decided to secure his services quickly.

If your a paranoid Tim you may say it was to disrupt the in form DU just as they had some crucial SPL fixtures and a Cup tie a few weeks later with RFC.

Now if you were of the mindset who doesn’t trust the referees, the fixture computer and the games administrators’ how do you prove your not paranoid and how do you quantify the effects these (sometimes trifling) matters have over the course of a Season?

My Opinion… These things add up…

Everything and anything that can be crystalised and quantified should be.

    Hail! Hail!

  21. A local newspaper report on Shay Givens interview on Rte television last night would love to see him back at the champions

SHAY GIVEN: ‘I CHOSE CELTIC OVER MAN UTD, BECAUSE CELTIC MEANS MORE TO ME’

    May 19, 2012

IRISH soccer legend Shay Given went on the Late Late Show in Dublin last night and told the nation what most of them don’t know – the love of Glasgow Celtic in Co Donegal!

The 36-year-old was speaking to RTE’s Ryan Tubridy as the build-up to Euro 2012 continues.

He spoke of his support for cancer charities in the UK and Ireland because his mum died from cancer when he was just five.

His wife has helped to raise €1.2 milion, he said.

But asked about his early career, the Lifford man – “I have fond memories of growing up in Donegal” – talked about the options facing him as a 16-year-old.

And in front of him was Manchester United (who are they?) and Celtic.

“My love for Celtic swayed the decision,” he told Tubridy.

No surprise there for Hoops fans in the county fed up with the national broadcaster failing to realise the incredible cultural connection with Celtic and Ireland.

Shay last week didn’t rule out a return to Celtic, who he left to join Blackburn because he was kept out of the Hoops first team by one Packie Bonner.

On TV in Dublin tonight Shay was a credit (as he always is) to his family and friends – and to Donegal.

He spoke about Thierry Henry again – and being robbed by the French.

But Shay also said he might stay on in football for the next World Cup in Brazil – using Mrs Doyle from Father Ted…in a “go on, you will, you will, you will” bit o’craic

That’s a great effort from last night. My brothers and I really enjoyed the night. One aspect we all commented on was that, in a room full of Celtic fans, the humour and craic, which is often hard to discern on the respective blogs, was evident from all 3 speakers, Paul 67, Phil McG, and Paul McConville.

The boy, Phil (?), with the microphone did a good job in keeping things going and had the good sense to avoid me when I raised my hand to ask a question.

Many thanks for providing us with the best and cheapest nights entertainment I have had in a while.

I’ll leave others to summarise the points made by the top table guests but it basically boiled down to the message that “Rangers are toast and there’s nothing the masons or Rangers fans can do about that inevitability”

Should happen soon but how soon is soon?

  25. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!..Truth and Justice will always prevail on

I’ve renewed, as usual………really looking forward to a bhun-free sporting arena …. Might even start going to away games / Hampden..

When you think about it, with all other clubs now now challenging for a euro spot, and with the guarantee of a level playing field, if every provincial gets 500 extra fans, at least, every fortnight, that’s an extra 10,000 fans …. We don’t need your bitterness / cheating, bhuns……

Green: ‘year of pain’ but Rangers’ history remains intact

    Alison McConnell

CHARLES GREEN has warned Rangers supporters there could be another “year of pain” ahead should his consortium succeed in their bid for the Ibrox club.

Green, who is leading a multinational group of investors seeking control of Rangers, met with supporters’ groups on Thursday evening to discuss his proposed £8.5m takeover of the club and his plans for the future.

The minutes from the meeting laid out the timeline in which Green hopes to either push through a Company Voluntary Agreement (CVA) with the club’s creditors or form a newco, which would then face sanctions to be decided by a future meeting of the SPL member clubs.

The minutes read: “Mr Green’s preferred route is a CVA. Funds are in place to pay the creditors. On or around next Friday, Duff & Phelps will write to the creditors with the offer. The creditors then have 14 days to decide if they will accept [followed by] a 28-day cooling off period. If all say yes, Duff & Phelps stand aside and Mr Green pays the creditors, although he will not yet be the new owner. Once the debt is settled, Rangers are out of administration.

Snipped a lot of this article as it trots out the party line, but thought the bit in bold was worth highlighting, ergo the headline should have read:

Mr Green is the puppet sitting on Craig Whyte’s knee
