The tens of millions Rangers denied SPL clubs

885

Last year we attempted to quantify the money other SPL clubs were denied by Rangers improperly registering football players – on the assumption that being found guilty of improperly registering football players was actually worthy of punishment.

Below is an excerpt of the article and figures:

Some of the losses were easier to calculate than others.  For example, it was easy to calculate that when Rangers won the title in 2009 with improperly registered players, earning automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage, they denied Celtic £15m European earnings, plus £340k SPL prize money. Other losses are less clear, specifically when a club was denied a place in a qualifying round for the Champions League or Uefa Cup, which they may or may not have progressed from.

We have established three figures for each club in the SPL during the season just finished, to cover the period from 2000 to 2012:

Minimum loss:
The absolute minimum each club was denied from European and SPL prize money as a result of Rangers finishing above them with ineligible players.

Weighted loss:
The figure based on Scottish clubs gaining entry to Champions League/Europa League (Uefa Cup) group stages from 20% of their qualifying campaigns (which is slightly less than trend).

Maximum loss:
The maximum a club could have achieved if it qualified for the European group stage it was denied entry to.

Out estimates take no account of the subsequent effect money has on future years.  For example, If Celtic earned an additional £15m from entering the Champions League group stage in 2009-10 their league challenge for that season would have been £15m stronger, and Rangers £15m weaker, potentially resulting in consequences in future years.

This multiplier effect would have benefited Celtic but it would be likely to have a greater effect on other clubs, some of whom would be denied the enormous percentage increase in budget automatic qualification to European group stages would have brought.

Hearts finished immediately behind Celtic and Rangers more often than any other club over the period and suffer the greatest potential losses, even more so than Celtic.  Hibernian, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Motherwell also suffered significant losses.

Several clubs got nowhere near European football over the period, and some of the 11 spent only a few years in the SPL but each club lost over £1m.

Figures for each club are:

Hearts
Maximum: £72.3m
Weighted: £16.3m
Minimum: £6.2m

Celtic
Maximum: £46.7m
Weighted: £21.9m
Minimum: £17.4m

Hibernian
Maximum: £34.8m
Weighted: £8.4m
Minimum: £3.6m

Aberdeen
Maximum: £21.1m
Weighted: £5.5m
Minimum: £2.7m

Dundee United
Maximum: £20.8m
Weighted: £5.2m
Minimum: £2.4m

Motherwell
Maximum: £16.7m
Weighted: £4.4m
Minimum: £2.1m

Kilmarnock
Maximum: £5.1m
Weighted: £1.9m
Minimum: £1.3m

Dunfermline
Maximum: £3.4m
Weighted: £1.8m
Minimum: £1.5m

Inverness
Maximum: £1.3m
Weighted: £1.3m
Minimum: £1.3m

St Johnstone
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

St Mirren
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

In the event Rangers fielded ineligible players during the period under consideration, which everyone apart from Neil Doncaster knows, and even he will be unable to deny next week, we know the following:

Rangers received a minimum of £40.9m which should have gone to the 11 other clubs, assuming each club lost all their European group stage qualifying campaigns.  This calculation does not include earnings from clubs now in the Scottish Football League, such as Hamilton Accies or [then]Dundee.

If Scottish clubs progressed to the group stages of European competition on only 20% of their qualifying campaigns the loss would be £69.0m.

The figure for total potential losses if clubs successfully progressed to every European group stage is, as the figure for 100% failure, more illustrative than likely, but the maximum cost to the 11 SPL clubs is £224.6m.

You can read our calculations here. European income figures were sources from Uefa data.

The people who really matter in this entire debacle are those who buy tickets for Celtic Park, Pittodrie, Easter Road, Tynecastle, Tannadice, Fir Park and elsewhere. It is patently clear that the game in Scotland is failing fans and clubs alike. It is time for fans of SPL clubs to unite and move beyond the busted grip of the SFA.

Only SPL fans, working together, can ensure each of clubs has a viable future.

I know i asked this yeterday but could Celtic not head up to Hampden with a cheque for 250k and tell the SFA/SPL that we are now going to use tax avoidance measures to pay our players. If they say no could we then threaten to go to CAS ?

Kano got sick one night, very sick. If it was not for so many Celtic Supporters, from so many places, then Kano would be an ornament in a sterile hospital room. That is not nice because Kano still breathes and he still thinks and he is still a Celtic Supporter to his very core.

A lot of money, by a lot of people, was raised to take Kano home. He can’t ever balance the books, but he’d love to.

None of us gets more than one go on the roundabout of life.

Celtic is celebrating their 125th Birthday and indelibly stamping it into their history by encouraging all to embrace the simple ethos of the clubs founding… let’s try and help those who just don’t have more than the air that they breathe.

A lot of Celtic Supporters are doing a lot of different things to raise money for to help those less fortunate than ourselves. To a lot of people that is no big deal.

I’m determined to help Kano pay back the kindness shown to him by the Celtic Support by supporting my club to help unfortunates. No big deal.

There are some from here who have said they will help me to help Kano to help Celtic to help others.

I give up the bevie for 125 days and I give up posting on here for 125 days as of the 1st Jan.. No big deal really, Kano has done both for the best part of four years.

I ‘m going to put a wee bit aside for each day that I don’t drink or post and forward it to Celtic to hopefully fill a belly that needs a feed or to make an unfortunate hope where only darkness is their dawn.(but maybe I can have St. Pat’s day off so I can share a day with some good Tims)

I’ve only one life and when I’m gone I soon be forgotten but if I’ve ever managed to feed one hungry person, if only for one day, then my life was worth something.

No big deal to me or you but the person I fed, he/she will never know where the food came from and they won’t ever be visiting my grave to put some pretty flowers at the base of a head-stone, they’ll be too busy worrying about tomorrow.

I can live with that and like Kano, once I’m gone, I’ll know that I never changed the world, hardly left a mark, but still I took to Celtic and I did something to try and ease the pain of others… sort of the Celtic way.

The original Big Yin once said they are proud of what they should-be ashamned of.

Lord Nimmo – Smith’s judgement shows he lacks a basic quality common sense.

Rangers use of ebt’s over a ten year period £47,659,000 with no tax paid was not according to Nimmo a sporting advantage.

Was that in his remit or was establishing deliberately withheld details of additional payments the yardstick he should have used to determine sanction.

Was the establishment of a sporting advantage even important in whether proper administration was carried out ?

The Spartans case 2011 shows you the level of punishment an administrative error brings.

Spartans re-signed their striker Keith McCloud,he was already at the club for 10 seasons.

They missed out a date on his re-signing form.

A three man judicial panel led by Vincent Lunny agreed that on a scale of fines open to them

£4,000 to £100,000 that Spartans would be fined £4,000 suspended for 12 months.

Rules are Rules though and the Sfa said they had little choice

    in addition to the fine

to throw Spartans out of the Scottish Cup

    for an administrative error.

This was not a deliberate action carried out over 10 seasons.

Not a deliberately calculated attempt to miss out a date but an administrative error.

I can understand why people now dont want to pay to watch a game with a stacked deck.

I have always thought it was a stacked deck so maybe am used to it.

Held fire commenting about yesterday until I thought it through. Only worthwhile thing I can add to everything else said is what my father-in-law have said to each other time and time again. The only way to beat them is on the park – nothing else hurts them more!! Thats where we need to fight our battles – win everything in sight and continue to make in-roads in Europe especially. They can kid themselves on about everything else – making all sort of victories out of guilty verdicts, but they can’t do anything about the Hoops putting the ball in the back of the net. Thats who we are and always will be – the famous Glasgow Celtic. Those going to the Lions event tonight enjoy it – remember, that is what ultimately led to the demise of our old rivals. They cannot stomach us being better and Lisbon will always haunt them. The thing I hadn’t realised, was that even through the years of financial doping, we won more league titles. I much enjoy being in our position having done things the right way – and earning our success and future the proper way. This is a time to stand tall and be proud of our club and look forward to passing on our heritage to the next generation so they can keep up the fine traditions and passion for Celtic going. HH

Only just calmed down enough to my sentiments down on paper (well actually to a Sevco friend on FB). So Here it is:

Rangers Football Club were found guilty of all charges put against them and subsequently fined £250,000.

Now, I don’t know if any of you are a company directors, but I am and have been for many years. RFC used these schemes to employ players of a quality they would not otherwise have been able to afford, and then deliberately (Lord Nimmo Smith’s judgement not mine) withheld the facts from the authorities (SFA & SPL). There can be no other plausible explanation for their actions other than to gain footballing advantage, and therefore to improve the profitability of the club and subsequently improve shareholder return. Doing otherwise would be a derogation of their fiduciary responsibilities, and if you do that badly enough you can get sued and go to prison. Remember ignorance and stupidity is no defence in law. The fact that they went bust despite this financial jiggery-pokery and competitive advantage is unbelievable. The level of incompetence astounds me.

As for the distinction between Board and Club, that’s a red herring of proportions that would feed Africa. Have no doubt they are one and the same in company law. It would be like saying the Tesco store in your High Street is completely independent of the Tesco Board. Its not! There is a direct line of control, therefore in law they are one and the same.

Therefore I and everybody else who does not get their opinions for the BBC, Daily Record, or Follow Follow, knows they cheated. And every time they talk of 54 titles (a record which is more likely to be beaten by Hearts than Sevco) the rest of the world scoffs and says “Aye Right”.

I am off to put a cold towel around my head now.
