There are three transfer deadlines Celtic and Hearts have to contend with this week: today, when the window closes in the five richest leagues, tomorrow at 11pm, when players need to be registered for European competition, and Thursday at 5pm, when the Scottish window closes. Smaller countries where the window closes later, can enjoy a few hours trade without being out-muscled by tiny (but comparatively rich) clubs.
So who are we up for? Dutch 19-year-old Joël van den Berg and Dane, Oliver Sørensen (24) arrived in Glasgow yesterday after medicals. Both are tall, mobile, midfielders and should be able to inject the kind of energy we missed so often over the last year.
Van den Berg arrives from PSV, where he was on the edge of breaking into the team, after the Eindhoven side cantered to the title last term. Sørensen left Midtjylland a year ago for Parma, where he played throughout the season but did not impress sufficiently for his new club to want to retain him. As we both know, we either have to be very early, or find someone who has not ticked all the boxes of an English side. Both are within development potential range, so fit the bill for Celtic.
Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone (33) will also be in town today to provide much needed competition to Viljami Sinisalo. Vil has started the season strongly (an indication of how porous we have been); I’m unclear which keeper Martin O’Neill will prefer. Johnstone played 12 EPL games last season but lost his place in December in a side which was by some margin the weakest in the league.
Cover is needed for other areas, mostly notably left back, where we currently have Kieran Tierney and a redeployed Liam Scales. The intensity of the season picks up from the middle of this month. It is not enough simply to be better than everyone else domestically, we need our backups to be able to complete too.

What happened to the Nico Raskin money? From demanding 25 million after the World Cup to struggling to get 8-10 million for him. If he doesn’t move this week they’ll be lucky to get Jonny Kenny money for him in the next window.

UPDATE: Celtic are working to finalise a deal for Chelsea left-back Landon Emenalo.
It’s believed all parties are hopeful of concluding a deal tonight.
The 18-year-old is expected to join on a straight season-long loan deal.
Emenalo picked up a knock in training with #CFC and has been allowed to recover before finalising the paperwork on the move.

CELTIC40ME – A fair point. If he took the time to communicate with us a bit more as befitting his role we would be able to take a more informed opinion. I guess much of his perceived weaknesses are a result of the constraints placed upon him and the board by DD.

Dalglish leaving. Here is my story…..
I was working in the Canadian Arctic. In the Belcher Islands. No TV, no newspapers. Just the Celtic Views that my Aunt Flora would mail to me from time to time. Usually 3 or 4 at a time. So not what you would call timely.
So, I thought, on one Saturday, that maybe the radio might have some english pash on. Sure enough, Charity Shield. Liverpool were playing some other english team.
I wasn’t really focused on the game, but at some point, I thought that the comms had mentioned a player called Dalglish. Then he mentioned it again. ‘Really’, I said to myself. An unusual name. Just like our Kenny.
The penny hadn’t dropped. Then at full time, they mentioned that Liverpool had got themselves a cracker of a player.
Then, slowly the penny did drop….
I was devastated. No alcohol to help. No-one in that small community who knew what football was, too commiserate. I never knew that this had been on the cards.
You will be happy to know that I am now almost over the shock.
