St Johnstone have been a managerial proving ground in recent seasons. Owen Coyle did a great deal of good work without achieving promotion to the SPL, but his two years there managed to sufficiently impress Burnley that they tempted him south. The people of Burnley were probably as surprised as the rest of us when Own led them to the FA Premier League but five months into the season he jumped ship to Bolton Wanderers.
Coyle kept Bolton up in 2010 and again in 2011 but they slipped from the league last summer. Poor form in the Championship soon turned sentiment against the manger and he was relieved of his duties in October.
Derek McInnes followed Coyle at St Johnstone and brought them into the SPL in his first full season but 15 months ago, after being touted for several jobs in England, he left for Bristol City, who, bottom of the Championship, sacked him today.
Steve Lomas is St Johnstone’s current manager and the latest to impress clubs south of the border offering larger pay-packets. He would be foolish to accept a job from a struggling club who have sacked their manager mid-season. As we have said several times before, managers receive a great deal of credit or blame but the success of a football club is infinitely more dependent on the entire structure of the club.
St Johnstone’s structure is just fine. The same is true of Inverness, where Terry Butcher decided to stay this week, as well as Ross County and Motherwell. The city clubs, Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts, Dundee United and Dundee all churn through seasons as compulsive underachievers. If they were able to do something about this fact our league would be the envy of most.

Seville
Our coach spent two nights in San Lucar de Barrameda outside Seville.
We took over a bar on the first night.
A worthy heard me ordering ‘Dos cervezas por favor.’ at the bar. He turns to be and says – hey big chap, how dae ye order two vodkas in Spanish. Smirnoff mind?
I says to the guy – just ask for ‘Dos Smirnoff’
‘Dos Smirnoff?’
Aye, says I, Dos Smirnoff.
I beckons the bar man. The worthy says ‘Dos Smirnoff.’ he turns and asks ‘Whit else?’ I says ‘Por favor’ – he says ‘Por favor’
The barman nods and pours two healthy vodkas. The worthy pays for them. Turns to me grinning and says – ‘Big chap, you’re a legend.’
Always makes me smile when I think of it.
Always will.

Ignore first half of above post, inadvertantly included when I went to copy & paste. Start at 1/3
“The city clubs,” Paul?
That also includes Inverness nowadays.
;)
For me, Boavista was an amazing moment. Watched game, alone, not believing we would do it.
When we went through, like many I couldn’t actually take it in. A European final – incredible, one of those things you thought you’d never see.
Along with he 6-2, truly one of the most important games in modern Celtic history. A landmark in the club’s renaissance since the turn of the century.

I attended the away game at Boavista. One of the most anxious and wonderful Celtic supporting nights of my life.
Eventually got back to a bar where we had a few bevvies with Porto fans who, naturally, were delighted we’d won and putting out their local rivals.
Owen……….
he’ll pitch up again soon, hopefully
as for the Merlot?
More power to ye!

Memories of Seville????
The siege of the bravest of the brave, the people of Short Strand continues.
Since the early seventies and probably before that the hardy people of that wee area have defended their wee enclave in East Belfast with determination, vigour and valour not known anywhere.God bless them all.

My mother died on the 15/12/01.
We played Aberdeen the next day.
Ramon Vega made his debut and scored twice.
He had the match ball in his hand to take a penalty for a Hat -Trick.
Henrik took the ball out of his hands, and slotted home the penalty for a 3-0 win.
I went to the match.
I speak to my Mum every day.
When Celtic need a goal I look to the skies and ask her to help.
No one had ever made me feel as loved as my Mum did.
The birth of my own daughter exposed me to the love that only a parent knows.
Each to their own.
I understand why many would agree with your point of view.
My Mum knew that I loved Celtic.
My sister said that I should go to the match .
That Mum would want that.
I went out of respect for her.
She looked out for every Celtic result because , it was important to her son.
As I say .
Each to their own.

Dear God ,
I just realised my typo.
My Mum died 15/12/00.

What about me in Cambuslang travel giving it big licks in front of tons of tims,
because they had changed our flight departure from Glasgow to Prestwick.
I’m on a rant and the fellow Bhoys are all looking at me with respect.
Then I get outside ,all smug like a sevconian….Awe feck av no picked up the tix.
Back in again …velly humble ,to much laughter from my fellow Celts…bassas.
