The truth about St Johnstone and Inverness

880

St Johnstone have been a managerial proving ground in recent seasons.  Owen Coyle did a great deal of good work without achieving promotion to the SPL, but his two years there managed to sufficiently impress Burnley that they tempted him south.  The people of Burnley were probably as surprised as the rest of us when Own led them to the FA Premier League but five months into the season he jumped ship to Bolton Wanderers.

Coyle kept Bolton up in 2010 and again in 2011 but they slipped from the league last summer.  Poor form in the Championship soon turned sentiment against the manger and he was relieved of his duties in October.

Derek McInnes followed Coyle at St Johnstone and brought them into the SPL in his first full season but 15 months ago, after being touted for several jobs in England, he left for Bristol City, who, bottom of the Championship, sacked him today.

Steve Lomas is St Johnstone’s current manager and the latest to impress clubs south of the border offering larger pay-packets.  He would be foolish to accept a job from a struggling club who have sacked their manager mid-season.  As we have said several times before, managers receive a great deal of credit or blame but the success of a football club is infinitely more dependent on the entire structure of the club.

St Johnstone’s structure is just fine.  The same is true of Inverness, where Terry Butcher decided to stay this week, as well as Ross County and Motherwell.  The city clubs, Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts, Dundee United and Dundee all churn through seasons as compulsive underachievers.  If they were able to do something about this fact our league would be the envy of most.

  1. Seville…..

Logged on to the Uefa site when they put some tickets on sale early for the ‘locals’. I went on early in the morning here in Canada, but the site had already crashed.

Went on again when I got home. Got a bit further, but always got a frozen window at about the 4th click. Tried and tried, gave up and went and did other stuff. Heading for bed, went to shut down the computer. Had a dozen Uefa windows open, closed each one, all of which were still frozen anyway.

Except the last one…..! Mad scramble for credit card etc, and got in and got 2 tickets….!

However, we were, at that time, half way through the last 16, so it was not as if it was sure, or even likely…..or particularly hopeful, that it would end up meaning anything.

Booked my flight half way through the last 8….that is after the 1st leg. Booked the hotel half way through the semi.

Spent the week in Seville. One of the first to arrive, and one of the last to leave.

Felt sorry for friends who came in and out on game day.

    Great memories…….

  2. … Made them there target of the banter slagging off their current less than sober condition staggering from side to side the two fella just laughed but the ladies contiined with the banter till they disappeared through the turnstile. As we all entered the stadium the two boys waited as we came through rolled out the flag and a 9 year old kid popped out !!!!! You want to have seen the Ghirls faces lol ! The boys were stone cold sober and they let the chicks know they nearly scuppered their chances if getting in ! Pmsl girls bought boys a beer and the dehydrated wean 2 gallon of water lol ! Unforgettable !!!!!!

  3. sitting here looking at a picture i found in a box in the loft,..its a black and white photo of the Celtic team celebrating winning the scottish cup in 65′ against Dunfermline,

big billy being held aloft, cup in hand, on Bertie Auld’s shoulder with a helping hand from Stevie Chalmers.

For some reason Bobby Murdoch is the only one i can’t see in the pic,..John Clark has the lid in his hand while John Fallon’s got the base,..the old shitty Hampden stand is in the background.

Its a black & white pic and and stamped on the back it has…Beaverbrook Newspapers,195 Albion Street,Glasgow…(copyright photograph)

If i recall it was the original from which the newspaper pic was taken.

Can’t even remember how i came about it,..it was nearly 50 years ago though.

    Ahh the memories..(or lack of) : )))

    From Twitter

Easy steps to getting the fans onside:

    – State that the only logical explanation for Sevco being accepted into Division 3 (leapfrogging the likes of Spartans and against existing rules) instead of being teleported to the top league in the country – is down to bigotry from the SPL, SFA and member clubs. (nothing to do with rules or what is right, of course)

    – Make a beeline for Belfast and allegedly meet paramilitary associates.

    – Peddle the myth that the club didn’t die. (even though he said it would if a CVA failed)

    – Attempt to sue ex-players for daring to find new clubs under TUPE regulations and brand them as traitors and deserters. (Resulting in a deluge of abuse from the fans)

    – Threaten every club who dared to vote that rules should be applied (especially Dundee United).

    – Make idle threats about leaving Scottish football because the new club is not getting the preferential treatment that the old one was accustomed to.

    – Threaten to sue UEFA under sexual discrimination laws… (No I didn’t make that up)

Why is he not being held to account for all this, and more, since it is the clearest evidence I have ever seen (apart from in an Edinburgh Courthouse recently) ?

  6. Celtic First,

Oy! Why you trying to punt our goalie to Barca??? Thats the job of the msm. Come to think of it, why would they make up mince about Hoops going to Norwich instead of considering that.

I have an official programme/souvenir brochure for the 20th anniversary tribute to the Lisbon Lions. Just a thought. I have been the proud owner of this since 24th May 1987 where I played in the band on this momentous night. There is even a page written by the ref on the night of our greatest achievement, Kurt Tschener.

I wonder if you all think it’s a good idea to put this up for auction to add to the wee Oscar fund. The programme is intact and complete. Thoughts?

By rights its a crime really that i have it in a box and not on my wall.

  9. Big Georges Fan Club on

Was in Seville the day before the game. Out for lunch early (rarest steak I have ever seen – “wipe its arse and throw it on the plate”), loads of vino, then in a bus to pick up some of the gang from another hotel. I remember driving round a huge roundabout – as far as the eye could see, at all points of the compass, was a sea of Celtic fans – sight will stay with me till I pop my clogs!

Eventually got to the hotel where we were picking up the other bhoys. I walked down the stairs of the bus straight into two of my sisters-in-law who had travelled up from Portugal that morning – truly mind boggling coincidence !!!

Me and two of my brothers stayed in Seville for about three days after the game to see the city – what a beautiful place. Went to the University – spectacular.

One thing that sticks in my mind – we wandered into the Hotel Don Alfonso XIII – very posh. Went into the bar and started speaking (sign language mostly) with the two barmen. They would not let us buy any grub – kept us going on tapas all afternoon – buckshee.

Gave us a local Seville newspaper published a couple of days after the game – a special on the cup final. Eight pages long – first seven and a half pages were all about the Celtic fans – bottom half of the back page mentioned Porto in passing. I think we made a good impression in Seville :-)

Cannot believe it was 10 years ago!!!!

The reason Bobby Murdoch isn’t in the photo is that he ran to the terracing and stand opposite the main one with arms outstretched saluting the fans. I can still see him do it to this day.

  11. Seville will always be like a JFK moment for us celts, boavista was unbelivable in itself but after the final whistle all attension switched to flights to spain straight away. 17 of us travelled from Tyrone, everyone had a ticket. 4 days were spent in the company of the best fans in the world. the banter , the beer , the memories. Sometimes i forgot we didnt return with the cup, such was the passion and pride on display from all the celts. it makes you realise how good MONs team really was. It still rates as 4 of the best days i had the pleasure of living…

That takes a bit of believing. Whaow. I take it you enjoyed the “band” that night. You better say yes as I was the bass player. Eddie Devine or “Young Eddie” as he was known then was brilliant. Do you think it is worth the raffle/auction for WeeOscar and will it make much in your opinion?

  18. Met a very beautiful young Scottish Lady in Malaga Airport in main Airport Terminal but she looked totally different to everyone else, she was dressed in a dark Business suit, high heels etc. and just looked as if she had stepped out of an office. In typical Irish fashion I said “You weren’t over for the game anyhow”. Oh I was said she, I work in London and as I was leaving work, I just felt I had to be there, so I went straight to the Airport and got a flight to Malaga. She hadn’t a ticket or anything but just wanted to be there. Absolutely true story.

as it takes the spotlight off what is a blatant sectarian act by

certain people, then as you know its easier to say they are as bad as each other, the fact is this is protestant extremists

attempting to bully their way, authorities are cowards to do anything as they know the consequences for themselves as most

come from that ilk, does anyone see cowardice in a similar vein to the scottish football authorities to another certain lot of bullies?
