The unfortunate shredding of documents

628

The report on Rangers on tonight’s Channel 4 News by Alex Thomson put meat on the bones of what has been going on at Rangers over the last decade or more.  Former chief executive, Martin Bain, was revealed to have written to then-chairman, John McClelland, in late 2003 asking that his pay rise is paid through the club’s Employee Benefit Trust, which is not subject to Income Tax or National Insurance.

Bain goes on to make a sinister note to McClelland, “at the end of the meeting I gave her back the letter addressed to me from you that stated my contractual increase for her to shred.”

Shredding documents?  Oh dear.

Bain declined to answer questions from Channel 4 but yesterday offered to drop his contractual claim against the club, suggesting his issue was with Rangers new owner, Craig Whyte.  It was the most self-serving drivel I have read in a while.

If this was how he behaved as Rangers chief executive Whyte was right to suspend him last year.  How Bain had the front to pursue Rangers for over £1m knowing the consequences of his letters to John McClelland beggars belief.

I wonder how HMRC view instructions to shred documents that could inform a view on a tax claim?  These documents prove Rangers directors knew how EBTs worked, understood what they were doing and the consequences.

Paul Baxendale-Walker walked straight out of a Carry On movie to give a great cameo performance. In a couple of years some poor casting director is going to have to try to find actors to play Baxendale-Walker, Whyte, Bain, Paul Murray and Zsa Zsa himself. Could any actors do justice to these bizarre individuals?

I’d be interested in your suggestions. Zsa Zsa for Sir David is a given.

Numb nut greed , hubris and stupidity led to them screw themselves.

I think you can add breathtaking, Murray inspired arrogance to that list. They truly thought every one was in his pocket and no one would touch them for it.

  2. the glorious balance sheet on

Lifted from the BBC website with slight corrections for the purposes of accuracy.

Ronald De Boer says it would be “ridiculous” if former club Rangers were to be stripped of any silverware.

The Scottish Premier League are currently trying to avoid properly investigating whether Rangers paid players through schemes that may have breached the league’s rules.

De Boer’s sentiments echoed those of former Ibrox team-mate Lorenzo Amoruso .

“Real Madrid are another example of a football club who have been at the financial doping and benefiting from the “honest mistakes” of refereeing decisions for years. They have many millions of debt, and can you think if they were to be stripped of those Champions Leagues? No, of course not, because they, like Rangers, are the people” said De Boer.

“I’m just very sad the times the club is having at the moment. The financial position is so grave the the Rangers Charity Fund couldn`t afford for my brother Frank to play tonight in case we got a penalty and he skied the ball out of the stadium. New footballs are very expensive, you know.”

“The Rangers players when I played with were great players at that time, one of the best teams in the world. Okay we got humped by Viktoria Zizkov, Fenerbahce and the likes but of course that was without Scottish referees being involved.

“At that time we deserved to win. And in the time of the nine-in-a-row they deserved to win.”

Speaking after taking part in an exhibition match between Rangers Legends and AC Milan Glorie, De Boer and fellow Dutchman Giovanni Van Bronckhorst said they were not paid through Employee Benefit Trusts when they were at Ibrox.

Asked if he had been paid through such a scheme, Van Bronckhorst said: “Not me personally. I don’t know about those payments. But maybe that`s because my wage slip was delivered to me pre-shredded in 5,000 pieces as agreed by my agent and Mr Murray. I’m just very sad the times the club is having at the moment.”

And De Boer added: “We did it just normal, standard Cayman Islands financial transactions. I was just getting the money from Rangers and I’m not looking what they did with it. I get it in my account and we made an agreement and that’s it. I don`t care if schools, hospitals defence and such like suffered because of the tax avoidance, I got my wages in the bank and that was enough for me.”

Rangers are currently in administration, with a deadline for best and final offers set for Wednesday .

“You could never expect a club like Rangers – that big – could be in this situation,” said De Boer.

“But you have to face it and look forward, and hopefully they can get out of this bad situation as quickly as possible.”

Sure . ! Hopefully somebody like Channel 4 will have a look at the astonishingly cosy nature of the relationship between Moonbeams and 2 Scottish Banks. A relationship which saw them give him mountains of money , not getting it back and the UK taxpayer eventually picking up the tab —— Scandalous !

Hopefully some hurting Huns will also get round to taking a wee look at how much Minty used Hun FC as a wee cash cow and a place to play pass the debt parcel with.

I get the feeling reading your recent blogs that you have come under severe pressure from some quarters. Thank God for you and people like rangerstaxcase, who have done each and every Celtic supporter the greatest service we could have asked for in exposing the corruption at the heart of the evil empire.

Remember the last derby legneds charity game circa 1983- 50,000 fans filled Ibroke paying £10 a head. It later emerged that the charity received £70,000. Not a word was said about it in the media.

  16. On the De Boer brothers. I rmember reading an artile with Ronald, shortly before Frank jined him at Tax converters. He said Frank and I were having a hearty laugh when discussing dalaries, I was earning far more than Frank was earning at Barcelona. Yes Barcelona with a doubt one of the worlds biggest teams were were paying the twin, one of their foreign imports, less than rangers were paying!

I also remember Numan knocking back Ath Madrid to sign for ramgers and saying something strange about wanting to play oiut his career in an easier league! No sunshine and playing in a top league for him, nice pension pot will suffice!

Serenity it is as you say but make no mistake the attacks on Neil are attacks on all of us. Neil is the proxy. Not saying that all of Scotland is against us , in fact I think that many outside of the west are against the ‘old firm’, but for how long can we pay the wages of haters and be judged by people who would rather commend the parcel bomber than condemn them. Celtic need to move away from Scotland. It won’t change the toxic , might even make it worse but Celtic will move on in history while our opposite in every way will fall into mediocracy. Looking forward to seeing Neil Francis Lennon lifting the flag and then the Cup. Hail Hail. Stand up for the champions and Neil Lennons victory.

  18. Is April the 6th a significant date? Are HMRC trying to get beyond that date so they can use new legislation on chasing newco debt?

  20. from Mark Chalcroft…

The Scottish FA President, and former Rangers company secretary and director, has claimed he knew of the EBT (he could hardly deny it considering it was published in the company accounts) but that only Sir David Murray knew its workings. This claim has now been utterly discredited and Ogilvie’s position at the SFA, not to mention integrity, requires further scrutiny to say the least.

  23. I liked Scott Brown before he signed for Celtic, back then in a Hibs jersey the boy had attitude. He reminded me of a young Bertie Auld (I’m not comparing the two, I’m saying that is who he reminded me off. Ps Bertie Auld is my favourite Celtic Player of all time)

Then Scott Brown signed for Celtic and when interviewed and asked why he signed for Celtic as opposed anybody else, he replied – “every FOOTBALL PLAYER in Scotland wants to play for Celtic”.

Then he had the year where his sister passed on. He had a couple of years where he played through pain. He showed Benfica what CELTIC players are made about. He helped out Kano. He conducted himself well and through all his trials and tribulations he gave the best he could. He loves Celtic and he is a friend to our beleaguered manager.

Now he is becoming a player of Celtic Class. I hope he does not lose the attitude and I hope he goes on to being close to Bertie Auld class.

Scott Brown in the hoops winds up the huns. Shame that!

  24. I sincerely hope alex thompson ,gives no information whatsoever to the STV and DAILY MAIL . They werent interested in doing some digging for themselves when they knew what was going on .
