The wings and news walking along London Road

155

Early on it all looked so easy.  Kyogo had an excellent chance saved by McCracken in the Dundee goal, then our usually prolific striker shot wide from 12 yards with the goal gaping.  Dundee settled after that, although their earlier attempt, which forced a save from Kasper Schmeichel, was their only chance of the game.

Most of the grumblings around me focussed on the wings, where Luis Palma and Yang were given rare and even rarer time on the field respectively.  Palma was supported by the returning Greg Taylor, while Anthony Ralston was on the right with Yang.

Most of Celtic’s play went down the left, even Ralston’s most adventurous passing found Palma.  Yang was an isolated bit part to the occasion, so of course he would not be productive.

Brendan Rodgers likes to make changes soon after the hour but last night he moved after 55 minutes.  Alistair Johnston, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate came on for Ralston, Paulo Bernardo and Yang.  Within 5 minutes the contest was over.

At Motherwell on Sunday, Johnston scored with a well-timed run to the back post, last night, it was an equally well-timed run to the front post, were he scored from the narrowest of possible angles to the relief of the crowd.

Seven minutes later, Arne Engels carried the ball 60 yards before slipping it to Kyogo, who was tripped inside the box.  Engels rolled the resultant penalty into the net to conclude the scoring.  Many in the North Stand expected the penalty award to be overturned for an adjacent incident – but that will remain between us.

The walk along London Road was punctuated by news from Pittodrie that our nearest rivals had beaten the bookies second favourites for the title.  No one on the packed street was conflicted. – Aberdeen do not have what it takes to win the league.  A cup is another matter.

Anyone who has been brought up in the West of Scotland knowns about past institutional bias.

But this is a totally changed society than it was 40, 50 or 60 years ago where it was common , indeed standard practice to ask ” What school did you go to ” prior to employment etc.

Most of the country do not even identify with Religion now. Im not saying that is right or wrong, its just a fact.

    ————————————

Agree with those common sense statements.

Some people see what they want to see, in order to believe what they want to believe irrespective of new facts, or, changes in society. They like to be always right, and so changing their views is an admission that they were wrong, or had incomplete understanding.

They’re wired to seek information, usually anecdotal, confirming their beliefs and reject anything that runs counter, even when there is ample evidence readily available. This is confirmation bias and is used by an individual(s) who needs a sense of belonging in a group, or, sub-group. HH

Surely if folks ancestors had moved to a bigoted evil country then at some point along the line the descendants would be be making moves to live elsewhere?

Let me reinterpret your stupid bigotry

Surely if folks Aunts,Uncles and Grandparents moved as Catholics to the land of the reformation and filtered out to all sectors of society successfully why would they ‘want to go home’ when they are already there or as you so clumsily put it make moves to live elsewhere.

I honestly do think, that the “Institutional bias” which was prevalent in the past,is a dying ember now, only hung onto by those previously mentioned, who happily decrease, year by year.

Just as well I didn’t present it as a flagship then. Or a boat of any kind. I gave it as an example of an Institution where, for some reason or other, these factors still apply. I provided it as one example, nothing more. I did not accuse the BBC as a whole of that particular form of Institutional Bias ( it does have other biases though- for example- They give time and space to a number of Royal correspondents and Royal reporters but do not provide balance with any form of Republican spokespeople). In answer to the question of whether it was just one aberrant hiring person at Spotscene and whether others were blameless in this personal bias, I would ask a different question- Why do they allow this person to operate individual bias against the expressed policy of the organisation as a whole and the last of the land? If it is just an individual’s bias- why has it persisted? Why did the advances made under Archie McPherson , reversing the reign of Blue Peter Thompson, not last with the events of 2012? Why, in fact, did so many Newspapers and News stations reverse their reporting narrative about liquidation and the inevitability of liquidation following an administration that wasn’t exited, be transformed in an instant with some invented implausibilities, like “engine room subsidiary” and “basket of assets”? It was the Era of Great Forgetting across all Scottish Media, where they would not acknowledge the truths they were presenting the previous week, and that this new story was the truth all along. Every newspaper, every radio station. They all fell in line with this turnaround. And they sacked people like Spence and Speirs and others who did not play along.

That’s an awful lot of individual rogues in a lot of individual institutions.

On the subject of Schools,I think you will find,it is largely the various groups in the Orange Order,or their lackeys who have found some irrelevant position in Councils or Government who raise this matter.Totally ignored by the rest of the country.

I honestly don’t think I’ll find that at all. I know some of the people who object from within the Green Party, the Labour Party, the SNP and Liberals. It’s a popular perspective- they want separate schools to be close and they don’t mean the “nominally non-denomenational ones”. the only schools that would be discontinued would be the RC ones. A survey carried out by the National Centre for Social Research in 2002 showed that 81% of Scots believed separate Catholic schooling should be phased out, a rise of 5% since 1992. Among the Catholic community, 59% believed it should be ended, a rise of 12%. There just aren’t enough OO members to have brought this about. They are a dwindling bankrupt organisation without much influence and, as a recent viral video showed, many fewer trumpets than they used to have.

I honestly do think, that the “Institutional bias” which was prevalent in the past,is a dying ember now, only hung onto by those previously mentioned, who happily decrease, year by year.

I agree and said so that the anti-Catholic hatred is diminishing and is becoming less acceptable. I disagree that hatred and bigotry are diminishing and becoming less acceptable. The New Right is on the rise and they are infiltrating even Celtic cyberspace- I don’t think we’ve cracked it and become perfect just yet. And neither do I believe you think that.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*

*RESULTS FROM GAME #15 CELTIC 2 DUNDEE 2 (JOHNSTON, ENGELS)*

    Good evening, friends.

A pretty short report from me on this one as there were very few highlights or major incidents to report on.

pre-match Brendan certainly wrung the changes but kept the balance of the team by doing this on both sides. On the right we replaced Johnston and Forrest with Ralston and Yang. On the left we brought in Taylor and Palma for Valle and Maeda. None of the 4 new starts showed enough to suggest they are of equal quality to the main men. 2 more changes saw CCV come in at the expense of the current player of the year leader Scales with Engels replacing Hatate in midfield.

Overwhelmingly in control of possession and with the ball remaining in Dundee’s half for 90%+ of the game we still huffed and puffed a bit for the first hour before finally making the breakthrough. Yang got to the bye line and his intended cut back for Kyogo was deflected into the path of the onrushing Johnston who got a left toenail to the ball to squeeze it home at the near post. Not long after that, Engels tussled for the ball just outside our own box and led the breakaway into Dundee’s half before playing a clever ball, blindsiding the defender, to Kyogo who was tugged to the ground. Penalty to Celtic, which Arne slotted away to keep up his 100% record from spot kicks.

Not too many other chances, just a couple of penalty box stramashes. But the game might have been different were it not for Kaspar’s fine low save in the first minute of the match.

We have now played 15 games this season, winning 12, drawing 2 and losing 1. We have scored 43 and conceded 14 (domestically it’s 37-6 and in Europe it’s 6-8).

A wee dip in the voting numbers but thank you to the 72 who joined in this time around (just below the season average of 75). Another close vote at the top, particularly for the runner up spot. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

    Schmeichel*: 2

    Ralston: 1

    Carter-Vickers: 15

    Trusty: 33

    Taylor: 2

    Bernardo*: 36

    Engels*: 36

    McCowan: 29

    Yang: 5

    Kyogo: 3

    Palma: 1

    Maeda: 0

    Hatate: 1

    Johnston: 51 (consecutive MOTM performances)

    Forrest: 0

    Scales: 1

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Dundee are –

    Johnston (51) – 5 points

Bernardo and Engels (36) – 4 points each

    Trusty (33) – 2 points

    McCowan (29) – 1 point

And the overall positions after 15 games played are –

    26 points – Scales

    23 points – Kuhn

    21 points – Hatate

20 points – Bernardo and McGregor

    19 points – Maeda

    17 points – Johnston A

    16 points – Engels

    12 points – Valle

    9 points – McCowan

8 points – Kyogo and Schmeichel

    7 points – O’Riley and Trusty

    5 points – Taylor

    4 points – Carter-Vickers

3 points – Forrest and Idah

    1 point – Yang

0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley, Welsh

*PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER*

The monthly award is based simply on the total votes received over that particular month. During October we had 6 games, 4 in the league (Ross County, Aberdeen, Motherwell and Dundee) and 2 away games in Europe (Dortmund and Atalanta). Third place with 151 votes is Alex Valle whilst the runner up on 168 was Alistair Johnston. But the clear winner with 194 votes is Liam Scales.

    Monthly winners –

    August – Calum McGregor 184

    September – Paulo Bernardo 173

    October – Liam Scales 168

We now look forward to the weekend as we try to book our place in this season’s league Cup Final. A Saturday tea time semi final at Hampden against Aberdeen, kick off 5.30pm.

    Aberdeen 6 fouls, 5 bookings

    Rangers 20 fouls, 4 bookings

At 77 minutes Rangers had only one booking from I think 14 fouls, and at one stage Aberdeen actually had more bookings than they’d committed fouls!

I imagine the Aberdeen players were more than a little wary of making tackles for fear of being booked or later sent off.
