Then there were two: Rod Petrie steps forward

1098

Hibernian chairman, Rob Petrie, yesterday told BBC Radio Scotland “Integrity is beyond purchase”.  It’s incredible to think that we live in times where this is actually news.

It’s hard to imagine how anyone would go about arguing with Rod on this matter.  Kilmarnock chairman, Michael Johnston’s recent comment, “The [SPL] clubs are mindful of a sporting integrity aspect but the commercial benefits may outweigh that” offers the alternative view, but the logical conclusion of Petrie’s argument is stark.  If integrity of top clubs can be purchased, what about officials, referees and players with bookmaker friends?

We can assume Hibernian will join Celtic in voting against admitting a Newco directly into the SPL, should such a vote occur.  Five clubs in total are required to block such a proposal.  With Petrie declared against, would Romanov at Hearts vote for Newco?  His previous public pronouncements suggest he would relish the opportunity to take on one of the big Glasgow clubs.

Dundee United and Aberdeen are two other clubs under significant supporter pressure.  Both teams are also keen to change the 11-1 voting rule, which would be possible without a Newco.

Rangers, Kilmarnock, St Johnstone (through manager Steve Lomas) have all declared in favour of admitting a Newco, I expect Motherwell and St Mirren will do the same.  Ross County and Inverness may fancy adding Dundee into next season’s relegation fight instead of Newco but there has been no indication how either club would vote.

The 7th May vote was the best chance of getting Newco provisions voted through.  The more time clubs have to consider the decision the more susceptible they will be to supporter lobby.

I am of the view that SPL chief, Neil Doncaster, will not allow himself to become aware if Rangers have a prima facie case to answer as a result of the SPL inquiry into contractual arrangements until after a vote is taken.  Deadline for clubs to respond to the inquiry passed over five weeks ago. A simple check of submissions against SPL records is all that is required. Even if each clubs issued an all-clear, the inquiry should have reported.

Doncaster perhaps has no idea of the flood that will come his way soon and wash away all of these questions. His opportunity to act before events overtake him is limited.

    Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo – STEVE Brown, the St Johnstone chairman, has warned that if Rangers go into liquidation and are not permitted to re-enter the SPL as a new company, several top-flight clubs would go out of business.

    Indeed. For who then would cheat them out of trophies, or tap up their best players and buy them for a pittance?

    Most of Scottish football has spent donkey’s years complaining about how the vampire squid that is the Old Firm has been robbing them blind, how much better off they’d be without the “ugly sisters”, the “bigot brothers”. How they wish the Old Firm would go to England. (thumbsup)

    The flat atmosphere that characterised the match between Celtic and St Johnstone on Thursday, and Rangers’ goalless draw with Motherwell in their final home game of the season on Saturday indicates what could be expected if the championship becomes a one-horse race, with the campaign effectively decided in February or even earlier. Etc, etc, etc…..

  7. according to SPL articles of asocaition, a vote on the “allotment of a share” requires a special qualfied resolution…needs 83% support…that is 10 out of 12 in favour..

    extract from SPL arts..

    Special Qualified Resolutions (83%)

    (e) any expansion of the League by the addition or admission of new members (other than as a result of the operation of the Rules governing promotion/relegation between the League and the SFL);

    (f) any reduction in the number of members of the League (other than as a result of a member ceasing to be a member of the League in accordance with the Rules and/or these Articles);

    (g) the allotment and issue of a Share;

    us plus two others would be enough to block newclub on that basis?..In would assume that certain clubs at least have their lawyers poring over these articles?

  9. Good luck to big Daniel Majstorovic. A player who I feel added a lot in terms of commitment, team spirit, effort, encouragement etc. He came in to a poor Celtic defence, and added some much needed dig. Never our best quality signing I felt he added real value, despite some claims from the crowd that he wasn’t up to it. Whenever Celtic scored, Majstorovic was always one of the first on the scene to congratulate the scorer – even if ha had to run 50 metres to do so.

    Even though Bobby Murdoch was class, he was still underrated by many outside Scotland. The respected Anglo-Italian Journalist Brian Glanville wrote about the Lisbon final, saying that the secret of Jock Stein’s side that day was the midfield partnership of Murdoch and Auld. Inter had already made provision for the electric pace of Lennox and the wizzardry of Johnstone (which failed anyway), but didnt pay enough attention to the passing ability of M and A, who fed the overlapping fullbacks with great effect.

    Even Souness said that Murdoch made him a player when he was a 20 year old at Middlesborough. Jack Charlton said he was one of the best passers ever. Its yet another travesty that Murdoch won 12 caps, scoring 6 goals. This was in line with the great Jimmy McGrory who won 8 caps while creating an all-time British Record goals haul. I’d put Bobby at No.4 in my all time list (that I’ve seen), behind 1-Larsson 2-Johnstone 3 Dalglish, and just ahead of McGrain.

    I spoke to the him about 15 years ago in a Rutherglen pub. A very modest man and a right nice guy too. He’d have been 67 today.

    God Bless Bobby and Tommy.

    You’ve only got to look at the last game of the season for Celtic to see that. 5-0 against Edinburgh Rangers would have made all but two of the SPL clubs happy. Of the two who may have been less happy, one of them are unlikely to be playing football next season and the other could follow them into obliteration in a short time.

If, SSB want to be seen to operate from a level platform then, why don’t they employ/recruit, Ronnie Cully or, Thomas Jordan from the Evening Times ?

  29. Ominous development from Uefa?

    “But what Scotland has to gain after what may amount to an expensive feasibility study and withdrawal from the Euro 2020 race is unclear.”

    Scotland, Wales and Ireland declare their interest in joining Turkey in the bidding race to land Euro 2020 hosting rights.

    The move by the Celtic nations will come as a huge relief to UEFA chief Michel Platini, who was faced with gifting the tournament to the runners-up in the Euro 2016 race because since mid-April they have been the only bidder.

    UEFA will confirm on Wednesday whether they have received any other declarations of interest by the Tuesday midnight deadline.

    “We can confirm that we have had initial discussions on the principle of a joint bid with both Wales and the Republic of Ireland and have declared our interest to UEFA in order that we can fully explore the opportunity in more detail,” the Scottish FA said in a statement.

    “At this stage no bids are expected by UEFA in relation to Euro 2020. These will not be required for at least 18 months.”

    Whether a Celtic bid materialises remains to be seen, as Turkey have been publicly championed by Platini. Scotland, Wales and Ireland would need to put a convincing bid together based around a mix of football and rugby stadia; the British countries simply do not have enough UEFA elite stadia to do it by themselves.

    Platini’s comments in support of Turkey, which lost out by one vote to France for Euro 2016, have deterred other nations among UEFA’s 53-strong membership from considering bidding for Euro 2020. Germany would have been a threat but decided not to bid at the end of April.

    However, Turkey’s football ambitions are complicated by a bid from Istanbul for the 2020 Olympics. IOC president Jacques Rogge and Platini are both in agreement that the country cannot stage the two mega-events in the same summer.

    The IOC’s decision on the 2020 Olympics, in which Istanbul faces competition from Baku, Doha, Madrid and Tokyo, comes in September 2013 – several months before UEFA decides the Euro 2020 hosts.

    UEFA’s Euro 2020 bidding problem is one of its own making.

    Under efforts to grow the profile of the European Championships and bring smaller nations into it, UEFA decided to expand the tournament from 16 nations to 24 from France 2016.

    That decision may be one that Platini regrets – with only two possible bidders in the contest for Euro 2020.

    Many nations simply cannot provide the eight or 10 high quality stadia to host Euro 2020. Poland and Ukraine struggled to find enough stadia for Euro 2012, the last competition to feature 16 nations.

    UEFA’s quest to take the European Championships to new territories is self-defeating in the 24-nation format due to lack of sporting infrastructure in all but a handful of countries.

    Joint bids by two or three nations appears to be the solution.

    But the logistical and political effort in organising a tournament with several football associations and with the input of different governments makes the case for a return to the 16-nation format a UEFA U-turn that most would surely welcome.

    For Euro 2020, the omens are not good for a Scotland, Wales and Ireland bid.

    Platini may well have leaned on Scotland to partner for a Euro championships bid in order to face the embarrassment of awarding the tournament to Turkey by default.

    But what Scotland has to gain after what may amount to an expensive feasibility study and withdrawal from the Euro 2020 race is unclear.

    In any case, the Celtic nations bid would always start out second favourites to Platini-backed Turkey, which wielded considerable financial clout in the race for Euro 2016.

    Scotland Wales had once considered a Euro 2016 bid, while Scotland and Ireland were knocked out of UEFA’s Euro 2008 bid voting early on.

    England 2018’s embarrassing World Cup bid failure may also be enough to put them off a three-way bid for Euro 2020.
