There is a team in this squad but defending for buttons

895

Of all the football nonsense, I hate scapegoating most.  So Ryan, I’m sorry, but what on earth were you doing?  We were 0-2 ahead and had created several other very good chances.  Milan were nowhere, they had not mustered a cohesive attack. That foul was conceded in the perfect spot for a free kick taker; you could read the script on how momentum would switch the moment it was awarded.

Attackers are primarily there to exploit opponents weaknesses, Tom Rogic, Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie combined to do this and put Celtic two ahead in the San Siro.  Tom came close on another occasion, Callum McGregor had a gilt-edged chance and having got himself into the perfect position, Jeremie Frimpong froze with Milan at his mercy.  We could have been out of sight.

There is a team in this squad.  The formation looked right.  Frimpong seemed liberated from his normal wide anchor, Rogic worried defenders before tiring; in particular, I was impressed by the way the ball was accurately bulleted across the field.

Oh, and we cannot defend for buttons.  I was chastised by a 16-year-old after the game for talking up the relative merits of this performance compared to Ross County.  Apparently there is a rulebook for defending two goal leads away to tier one teams, you defend like Ross County and close the game out.  But we don’t know how to defend like Ross County.  Imagine that!

What I will say is, they fought for their manager last night, Commando Christie in particular.

No reason why we need to play a keeper.

Just play with a “backy In” like when we were weans. Probably wouldn’t be any worse.

When you lose a child, when you bury your child, it is awful, just awful. It is so different from the natural sequence of events.

I have some idea of how you must be right now. You go out in the street and you see people carry on with their normal business and you think, ‘How can this be?’

At the moment for you, your wife and family, there is little help for pain. You may think of the random cruelty which became a part of your life. And it is a tragedy of such proportion that you may think life will never be the same. It won’t.

But if my experience is anything to go by, that overwhelming grief may be with you for some time. But your pain will lessen in time. You will think of your son every day of your life and often with joy and laughter.

God bless you and your family.

    Celtic shareholder numbers.

About 75% of Celtic shares are publicly detailed and widely known in terms of ownership.

After that it’s difficult to know exactly what number small individual shareholders account for.

Now, I have to clearly qualify and say that both the following number and percentage are both only an estimate.

But let’s say for the sake of round numbers, that Celtic have approx 20,000 small shareholders, with a shareholding of approx 20%.

It’s likely the numbers officially registered, will be significantly less than above, but I’ll use these round numbers as a starting point.

It would be interesting to know then, if approx 10,000, or 15,000 or 20,000 are actually officially registered to vote, and of course what their combined total shareholding would be.

As if someone isn’t registered to vote, and probably after more than 25 years there must be a fair number who are not, then their shareholding has no influence.

Only the Club will know how many small shareholders are actually on the shareholder register, and what their combined shareholding total actually is.

If anyone can seriously answer any of the following questions it would be very interesting indeed.

    1) How many small Celtic shareholders are actually registered to vote, and what their combined shareholding would equate to.

    2) How many members does the Celtic Trust actually have.

Is it potentially as low as just 200 – 300, or is it significantly many more than that.

    3) Celtic season ticket holders : I am estimating approx 53,000 as this figure has been quoted on numerous occasions.

    4) How many members does the CSA have.

    5) How many members does the Affiliation have.

Clearly, the Celtic Trust members, as well as the CSA and Affiliation members will all be Season Ticket Holders as well.

It would be very interesting indeed, if anyone new the actual answers to the above.

For what it’s worth, Bayern Munich in 2008 had approx 151,000 members and by 2018 they had 291,000 members.

In 10 years they have doubled their membership.

Just one last very interesting thought :

If 50,000 Celtic Supporters over the last 25 years have spent directly with the club say an average of £1000 each per Season.

Between Season Tickets, home European games, home Cup games, merchandise, food & drink etc.

Then the total spend would be in the region of £1,250,000,000. Yes that really is £1.25 Trillion Pounds.

Which truly is an astonishing amount.

And for spending in the region of £1.25 Trillion Pounds, 50,000 Season Ticket Holders, don’t even get a vote.

And yet our club only has a total shareholding value of approx £95 Million Pounds, it really does make you think.

Hopefully, with good grace and wisdom, our current custodians will see the light soon, and begin to plan for change.

Wherever, you are in the world stay safe and well, and have a good weekend.

    Hail Hail.

  18. Thinking about tomorrow.

I believe we need the ball carrying threat of Frimpong and Laxalt, even though their final ball is not the best.

In order to shut the back door behind them, I think we need a back 3 and 2 genuine DM’s ( I will go with Brown and Soro, but Bitton might be acceptable).

That means only 2 can be selevted from our striker options and AMs (Christie, McGregor, Ntcham, Rogic & Elyounoussi).

    I am proposing

    Hazard

    Welsh (or Duffy) Jullien Ajer

    Frimpong Brown Soro Laxalt

    Ntcham McGregor

    Edouard

I choose Ntcham above Christie because

    Ntcham links well with Eddie

Someone other than Ryan will be forced to take our set play kicks

& Christie might need a rest to focus

I choose him above Rogic because this is a light attack , so we need a hard running midfielder (Callum or Ryan)

We have a dilemmaa with Rogic, Ntcham and ELyounoussi as they are among our most gifted technicians but all are a bit diffident about other aspects of the midfield game. Big Tom is slow and not a good tackler, Mo is either brilliant or invisible with no reliable graft to his game, & Ntcham thinks tracking back is beneath him. We can only afford one of these mercurial talents at a time. Having 3 in the squad is a bit too much of an overload of the fragile & gifted types.

I know we aree playing St. Johnstone at home and this is a very defensive set up for that challenge, but I am taking a long term view.

We need to startt sealing the seive. Attacking wing backs cannot do this and Scott Brown playing with a guy who is unsuited to DM (Ntcham or Mcgregor) cannot do it on his own. We cannot afford to take our only pacy defender (Ajer) out of the back 3. And we cannot afford to weakne team quality by playing less able players (Ralston & Taylor) just so we have a back 4. Therefore, by default, it’s Brown and Soro as the UniBond sealant DM pair.

Once we get confidence back to the defence and that only comes via the confidence that a couple of clean sheets provides, we can tinker with this formation and get back to the ultimate goal of 2 up front.

But We need to move away from having to score 3 goals to guarantee a win.

This is a brilliant post by Auldheid, which I read on Sentinelcelts today, and just wanted to share with everyone.

The point made in No.5 about a potential membership card is a brilliant idea, and hopefully something the CST will really consider, as a way towards a membership scheme run by the members.

The Future of the CST. Thoughts.

The following are some thoughts for CST to consider to help make Celtic more accountable to their support based on experience of pursuing Resolution 12.

    1. Suggest CST change name from CST to the Registered Name: Celtic Supporters’ Society Limited Company Number: IP29147R so that it is clear CST is open to supporters and shareholders alike.

    2. Give supporters without shares a reason to join more than buying shares to enable CST to speak for them . Make use of technology and harness social media to identify representational issues, seeks views and act on them after gaining consensus.

    3. Revisit the CST Constitution to see if it needs changing to reflect what in effect would be a re branding and whatever aims , objectives and roles the rebranded organisation take on.

    4. Expand the new organisation to cover many thousands of Celtic supporters, ST Holders, Celtic TV subscribers, etc to give them added authority when raising issues with The Board.

    5. Give each member a membership card with a membership number.

    6. Be prepared to use the financial investment supporters make in Celtic to challenge what is in the Company’s interest where resistance is being met by The Board with no good reason.

    7. Make the Celtic Board more accountable and transparent as a result.

    8. Use subscriptions to fund share purchases, set up legal cost fund (you need lawyers to argue your case with Celtic/SPFL/SFA Lawyers) and pay someone to administer /manage the expanded membership.

    9. Reshape web site to capture emerging issues, keep track of them and keep membership up to date on issues

    10. Invite contributions from Celtic supporters that align with organisations aims for publishing on the web site.

    11. Allow for a much expanded AGM and look at how it might be set up, perhaps using same technology as the Open Meeting on Zoom.

    12. Encourage volunteers with specific expertise to join sub committees to cover separate issues where particular knowledge is needed.

    13. Set agendas and invite Celtic to attend rather than be invited to meetings in small groups and encourage two way dialogue with Celtic as a prerequisite for restoring trust.

    14. Disabuse The Celtic Board of any notion the Celtic support are not capable of rational engagement.

    Res 12 Lessons.

    1. Much bigger support baseline needed.

    2. Celtic use the lack of such to ignore pursuing issues

    3. Legal fund absolute necessary to establish shareholder rights and Director responsibilities and challenge legal reasons used to obstruct progress.

    4. Media are under Celtic’s thumb, many journalists briefed on Res12 evidence, none followed up because it is not in their interests, so a respected presence on Social Media required to get any message out.

    5. Make a connection between business issues being pursued and results on the park so that there is a greater understanding of the importance of having a Board that is accountable as symptoms of poor business practice manifest themselves on the field of play.

    6. A lot of hard work involved but easier if spread over a larger organisation with a wider resource base to call on..

  20. So Pedro is a money making genius is he, he has made millions for the club has he…………

1,654 days ago Celtic appointed Brendan Rodgers.

The share price was £74, almost exactly where it was when Lawwell arrived 12 years earlier.

That was 12 years of zero shareholder returns in an era that football revenues exploded.

The year before Rodgers arrival Celtic had to put tarpaulin over a portion of the stadium as they couldn’t sell out the stadium.

We floundered under an unknown Scandinavian manager winning only 3 of the six trophies and failing to do anything of note in Europe.

The CEO was cut out if the recruitment process as the club took a massive step forward in terms of modern football managers.

The stadium was filled with 15,000 fans to recognise this great leap forward by the club, joyous scenes.

We went on to win the next 11 domestic trophies on the back of the platform laid down by Rodgers.

We qualified twice in a row for CL.

The stadium sold out and turnover went over £100m

The share price went up 120% in 18 months to £165

    Rodgers decided to leave Celtic.

Instead of continuing this obviously successful strategy on all fronts the CEO regained control, after appointing the stand in manager in a fit of excitement in the shower room after a cup final win turning his back on a modern strategy.

18 months later before we enter December we are out of two European competitions, out the league cup and falling behind in the league with so signs of any way out of one of the the worst 10 game run in our history

The club looks rudderless and the stadium has just had fans protesting in the middle of a pandemic such is the frustration level.

The share price has lost 75% of the gains it made in 2016-18. It would not be surprising if it returned to £75 by the end of the season.

This means in an almost 20 year stewardship there will have been no shareholder value created.

The only time the shareholder value increased was when the CEO was removed from the strategy.
