There is a team in this squad but defending for buttons

895

Of all the football nonsense, I hate scapegoating most.  So Ryan, I’m sorry, but what on earth were you doing?  We were 0-2 ahead and had created several other very good chances.  Milan were nowhere, they had not mustered a cohesive attack. That foul was conceded in the perfect spot for a free kick taker; you could read the script on how momentum would switch the moment it was awarded.

Attackers are primarily there to exploit opponents weaknesses, Tom Rogic, Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie combined to do this and put Celtic two ahead in the San Siro.  Tom came close on another occasion, Callum McGregor had a gilt-edged chance and having got himself into the perfect position, Jeremie Frimpong froze with Milan at his mercy.  We could have been out of sight.

There is a team in this squad.  The formation looked right.  Frimpong seemed liberated from his normal wide anchor, Rogic worried defenders before tiring; in particular, I was impressed by the way the ball was accurately bulleted across the field.

Oh, and we cannot defend for buttons.  I was chastised by a 16-year-old after the game for talking up the relative merits of this performance compared to Ross County.  Apparently there is a rulebook for defending two goal leads away to tier one teams, you defend like Ross County and close the game out.  But we don’t know how to defend like Ross County.  Imagine that!

What I will say is, they fought for their manager last night, Commando Christie in particular.

  1. A wee repost from earlier…..

Delighted to see that quite a number of folk are able to put some distance between (a) disappointment with the defeat and shipping 4 goals and (b) recognising that a few of our players performed well enough to merit one of their 3 ‘best performer’ votes. So keep the ole emails a coming to me at CQNPOTY@GMAIL.COM . And in a one-off relaxation of the usual rules, tonight the polls will stay open for an extra half hour till 10.30 with results out around 10.45. Blame Ant & Dec ;-)

  2. Rock Tree Bhoy on

If they do blow the 10 its a certainty there will be payback, and it won’t be Neil and the players they come looking for:

I don’t think Lenny is daft but he surely must have an inclination that he is being scapegoated by his employers.

Why would he put up with it?

  4. GARCIA LORCA @ 4:40 PM,

Old London Town, still working on the crossrail are they:))

Guess it must have been an odd place during lock down.

I remembered there was an old photo of Malky MacDonald taking a training session back then. Looked it out but he and the players are all wearing old school tracksuits, so that hasn’t shed any light.

It would be great if you could post that photo.

    Hail Hail

  5. I was fine with Neil being appointed back then, I had no problem with it at all.

Since then what has he won ? 2 leagues a league cup , a scottish cup, and another to come.

I was at Hampden when the whole celtic end sang his name as he was appointed.

The ASDA car park had Green brigaders in it all signing his praises

    short memories

  6. lets all do the huddle on

if PL wasnt such a grey suited old bean counter fuddy duddy, he could turn the tables on the GB by posting a picture on twitter of him DD and NL hanging a banner up at the GB section with some appropriate slogan on it

thats the type of childish thing i would do in his position

and i would only take a 2 million quid wage so i would be much cheaper than him as well

    !!BADA BING!!

Only if the present incumbents are still in post, so mibbe no!

A few rumours doing the rounds, I can’t see the leadership at the Club changing any time soon unfortunately, we need some real Celtic men ,and women, to try and make a move.

  8. Feel absolutely conflicted about NL situation.

Been back and forth for months on this. He should stay, he should go. He should stay.

What I will say is that the man is made of absolute granite.

It’s all about league games now, we can’t slip up even once.

I was greatly heartened to see a team playing with tempo and no little skill last night, the usual failings made us come undone. No idea what to think. Again.

My ideal scenario remains that NL takes Celtic to 10 in a row. Still a possibility, though I completely accept and understand others have fixed their minds that this wont happen, and those are opinions I cant argue with – they are all based on reasonable evidence. But the manager has my support.

Anyways, I look forward to Sunday.

In the fitba’ business, unfortunately, you are only as good as your last game. We have just lost ( badly ) 4 on the trot, with no indication that the manager can turn it around. Patrick Viera just found out that hard truth yesterday.

  10. Elhamed is shot to bits, he’s had a nightmare season. Some of his defending last night was powder puff. He needs taken out.

We need a proper goalkeeper in January, a right back and another winger. The question is in what shape will we be before those deals are done if indeed they are.

Somehow we need to shift the momentum. It’s only 5 points nett but at this stage all evidence suggests the gap will widen further and soon.

  11. ST STIVS

Very valid points. If we sacked Neil Lennon tomorrow or after Ross County game and reflected on that sacking in 10 years time, I think that would take some justification, given his record.

We cant win a league defending like we are currently. However, we are not adrift by any means. Our rivals will have their blip and I saw enough last night to see a team willing to put the hard yards in – who also played with great precision and competence in the final third against a top team – Sunday will reveal everything for me.

  12. Prestonpans Bhoys , 6:09 pm , GFTB wiznay disappointed, when Neil Lennon got the job in the showers, as he tells us about a hundred times a weekend 😀 Big Jimmy welcome back ya legend ☝️

Absolutely spot on.wasnt that long ago 7k plus, were singing his name to the rafters in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.So sad to see the pile on to one of our own.

    Bada Bing 6.15

Hope so .Like a lot of lifelong Celts I know, zero time for them.Toxic and sully the reputation built up over the decades of the Celtic support.Wish they would take their politics and piss off.Maybe the stadium would find its voice again,a cauldron way long before any Green Brigade was formed. So sorry ,no love in for me with their latest poor statement.

  14. is Big Jimmy banned again ?

what was the kerfuffle wrt to JerseyBhoy ?

who was the kev reincarnation ?

  15. TOMMY JOAD- given the Board’s actions in the last week, do you think we would change the manager, if we don’t win on Sunday? I don’t think so….HH

  16. INIQUITOUSIV

It’s not a like for like comparison though is it. Does Viera have a track record of success at Nice as a player and manager? Or for coming back against the odds after poor starts?

I get the view that we have dropped our standards but lets see what the next four league games bring. This league is a long way from being over.

Think you will know that I’m not a fan but on a human level this is cruel.

  18. Celtic play St Johnstone at 15.00 hrs on Sunday. A game we must win and circa 3 weeks prior to a history making Cup Final.

As the coach slowly navigates up the Celtic way, taking care to avoid the fenced ring of steel the fans screen their hatred. Lennon, Lennon Get to F@ck is chanted in unison.

Maybe it’s just me, but how the f@ck does this motivate Celtic to perform and achieve the victories MOST of us want ?

    HH.

  19. Bada Bing, if we were to lose on Sunday and no action taken then that would be definitive from the board and completely scandalous. At the moment their support for the manager can still be justified… I think.

I get the scepticism that they are just completely unprepared and negligent, and in many ways I share that opinion – we will find out with the next league defeat, although I hope it doesn’t come for a long time.

  20. Saint Stivs –

these photos of yours are one of the highlights of my weekends! That last one of Bobby Murdoch made me smile with the caption referring to the Glasgow derbie ;-)

  21. Chairbhoy @ 6.17pm.

Crossrail- way over budget, further delayed by at least a couple of years and questions being asked about its relevance.

I live by the Marble Arch tube stop so once it is finished the crowds will disembark a few hundred yards along the road at the newly renovated Bond Street station to go shopping in the large department stores of Debenhams, House of Fraser, John Lewis……… or maybe not.

Irish/ Shamrock strip photo. I have asked my brother to post that picture ( the one with the white collar ).

  22. Jobo,

none of them are mines, I just copy over from the twitterati because I think there are some on here who would access these things otherwise.

i just find them fascinating, reflective, more than nostalgic they prise memories out of others, and remind us we have been bad places and good places before.

these extra-ordinary times are just wearing everybody down, the Neil GTF chants were just gut wrenching to me, no different to signing the same to Billy or Jock or Mr McGrory, or Danny or Paul on the pitch,

    it is ugly and hysterical,

the celtic support should be bigger than an ultras mob mentality trying to emualte their continetal counter parts.

sad times , and for the 5th night in a row the BBC sports leads with pictures of the mob and now the fences.

  23. GREENPINATA

You are completely correct. Everyone has now made their very justifiable points about the manager. Now lets move on to Sunday. This league has miles to go. Miles.

  24. Shorties sleekit footnote slipped in to thur unblinking piece on DUFC………….

“Those in isolation will also be unavailable to face Rangers on 13 December.”

  25. The success of the current board has been astronomical. 9 titles in a row and on the verge of an unprecedented quadruple treble. This is sheer and utter dominance and done with a healthy bank balance to boot.

We come into this season and the key positions we have invested in have been a let down – in particular the much needed defensive positions. These are mistakes at the hands of Lawell and Hammond – NOW its not like they can fix it immediately – they need to wait until the next window to evaluate and attempt to correct.

Not player whether they are valued at 500k or 20million is a guaranteed fit with the team for a number of reasons.

We bought poorly and couldn’t coach youngsters to fill key spots – this is not Lennons fault – he doesn’t buy the players.

We got a massive response from the players against Milan and could easily have been 3 or 4 up after 30mins – Defensively we are woeful but I think its down to personnel rather than just tactics.

If we hang on until January, I’m sure we will strengthen. If Lennon loses another league game then change will be broader.

See the bigger picture and be grateful for what we have experienced over the last decade – I lived through Rangers 9 in a row , the over spending, the awful refereeing decisions, the pain of Tommy burns team and the inability to match financially. We are strong now financially and can bounce back!

The green brigade and all fans are entitled to opinion and demonstration – but the last couple of weeks has gone too far and stinks of spoiled entitlement and immaturity. I hope it doesn’t have deeper impacting effect!
