There will be no end to it Celtic – unless you put an end to it

I bought my first tranche of Celtic shares in 1994 but when Fergus offered his shares to the fans (1999?) I was not in a position take up the offer.  Few of us did, as a consequence, Fergus sold most of his holding to Dermot Desmond.

It was a pity, as I liked the democratic feel of wider share ownership.  Subsequently, when the club needed money in 2001 and 2005, share offers were not taken up widely by the support, so perhaps share concentration was always likely.  When the club itself was in jeopardy the support dug deep, Fergus famously commenting on how those queuing up in 1994 to pay money for Celtic shares, clearly had little income.  The subsequent share issues were about rebuilding the squad and training complex, less emotive topics.

Still, it is important to me to be a shareholder, I know many of us feel the same.  We can call the executive to account and, as there are many thousands of us, we represent with wider support, immune from fads.

The Trust yesterday proposed shares are issued instead of refunds to season ticket holders, who were unable to attend in person this season.  In case it needs said, while we received rights to view games online, many families earned no incremental benefit for additional season tickets held in the same household.  Some families, including mine, paid for several tickets to get the exactly same service as a family with one ticket.  And on top of everything else, there was the football……

Unlike others, Celtic chose to offer a partial refund on tickets for last season to compensate for games not played.  That is not going to happen this season for a variety of reasons.  For a start, if the season completed, a refund (optional or otherwise) would not be due.  Most significantly, they spent the money.  Our ticket revenue is not just to maintain access to the stadium, it pays for Odsonne and his pals.  I doubt a single club in Europe will offer refunds – and if I’m being brutally honest with you, the only money I want to see leaving the club is for a new manager and players.

I suspect the Trust feel the same, which is no doubt why they proposed a share issue.  It is a question worth asking – and it keeps wider share ownership on the agenda.  I can also imagine the next shareholders meeting if shares were issued on a voluntary basis!  Anyway, if you can afford it, buy shares, own a piece of Celtic (that will forever unlikely be diluted to compensate for poor value from the season ticket).

The Scottish Government is the recipient of an angry letter from Newco on social distancing measures, or the lack thereof.  “When you swim with the sharks”, springs to mind.  They are a social and health risk to the country.  Put them back in their box at the first opportunity, Celtic.  It was correct the club Tweeted last night that they are not half of anything, in reference to their bus supplier’s “half of the Old Firm” comment.  A whole lot more clarity on this and related matters would be appreciated.  If the bus suppliers gets away with dragging our name into social unrest elsewhere, what damage could the sanitaryware company do?  A line has been crossed.  There will be no end to it Celtic – unless you put an end to it……

Not been on in a while and no doubt this has been covered numerous times.

I do believe it was you that suggested something along the line of “if Celtic lost aspects of our club because of the demise of rangers then you wouldn’t miss it” It was spot on in 2012 as it is now.

Ian Archer was correct in his opinion that they are a constant embarrassment and an occasional disgrace.

For the life of me I do not understand the insipid acceptance of the Celtic board on all references to the o..firm tag. I for one want nothing to do with them. It embarrasses me.

I do not understand Celtic’s inertia with seemingly accepting the same club lie.

They basically held onto our coattails while cheating Scottish football. Yet our own club expects us to just accept it?

Not for me I am afraid.

How many will be fined £50 and told not to do it again?

Or will someone with a big pair of cojones say, ” eff off sunshine! You’re going down.”

The timing of all this breaks my heart……buses, refs, media etc. This should all. have been addressed when we were on top.

It’s never too late to change, but the fact it takes the Huns winning the league to potentially bring it about is dreadful.

FWIW – I’m not sure the rugby chap will take it to them. Can you get much more ‘establishment’ than the SRU? To become chief executive would have required much brown nosing and ‘going along to get along’. I’m not convinced much will change.

We have had plenty of opportunities to move so far ahead of the other club(s) that the old firm label would be meaningless. We haven’t done it. Any time we have opened up a significant gap we have gone backwards rather than forwards.

  5. BSR – v droll, I’d expect no less

FormerGM – totally. All challenges and complaints we make at this point (and for the foreseeable future) will be met with disdain as sour grapes.

I think it is safe to say there will be confrontation on the 21st, with or without the GB. These nutters are gearing up for a summer of violence. Can you imagine if any ‘walks’ are permitted?

And can you imagine if any ‘walks’ are banned by the council?

They will need to put fences up around the auld City Chambers.

  8. I remember saying on here 2- years ago to stop using Parks buses and was told we use them because they are free i.e. Parks provides them to us in return they get the advertising/marketing association.

I wonder if that is still the case when we are needing multiple buses each week?

Must be another coach company that would be happy to have an association with Celtic?

  9. I have never been in a position to buy shares in the club, but I am now.

Could someone tell me how to go about it.

    Thanks in advance

  10. Man Utd saying they are after a new keeper, Can we pay them to take Barkas?

Remember the time they signed a decidely fat and unfit Goram.

He got his debut on April 14th, 2001. Picture the scene in The Old Trafford tunnel, post-match. It has ended Manchester United 4-2 Coventry City.

Courtesy of Middlesbrough’s unlikely victory at Arsenal over the same weekend, the Red Devils have secured their third successive Premier League crown.

    Ferguson approaches his new goalkeeper.

    “Did you enjoy that, son?”

    “Gaffer, that was f*cking brilliant”.

“Good. It’s a good job we signed you after we won the league!”

Most of our players have been a disgrace this season. Dressing room needs gutted. Players that we’ll definitely still have next season to rebuild around:

Welsh, Taylor, CalMac, Mikey J, Turnbull, Soro, Jamesy. Bain and Hazard too, tho’ neither ready to be first pick.

Jullien would have left if not seriously injured. Broony will surely retire. I would get shot of all 4 strikers. Griff is a brilliant player, but a screwball. Ajeti hasn’t settled and Klimala is a not very good trier. Eddy needs to be sold.

The 4 loannees will all leave, although I would like to see Kenny signed. Moi is too fleeting in his contributions. Other 2 have been poor.

Our loaned out players will hopefully all be sold – N’tcham, Hendry, Shved and Bayo.Bolingoli would be better chucking football rather than coming back into the country. Rat.

Bitton and Rogic should go and I hope Christie gets his dream move to Sheff Utd or Burnley. Barkas needs to leave.

Ralston has a great attitude, but not quite good enough and needs to find his level with another SPFL club. Ajer needs to be sold, though he’ll be a huge loss.

I hope Ewan Henderson gets a look-in and we have at least a couple of other decent academy prospects that are given the chance. Let’s see what Luca Connell can do.

    Wee Dembele will leave.

All in all I could foresee an extreme where only 11 of our 28 man first team squad remain. I think the scale if this season’s non-effort warrants that level of turnover.

It’s unrealistic to expect us to do anything to challenge a fairly strong huns team next season or even the one after that. I think we’re probably looking at 3-in-a-row minimum for them. Unless they go bust again, which I continue to hope for.

  12. Roy Keane’s odds tumbling. I know it probably doesn’t matter but it’s still scaring me…

  13. PeterLatchfordsBelly on 10th March 2021 2:01 pm

Can’t disagree with much of that except I’d give Hendry a chance.

  14. Last night was a good start. The Club now have to follow through and challenge where necessary.

I’m not saying a battle a day or a statement a day, let’s not get involved in an argument with a drunk etc.

But let’s start asking questions when needed – May I suggest we request the SFA publish all material in relation to their UEFA licensing process this spring ? Let’s ask them to show their workings.

  15. Peterlatchfordsbelly

I don’t think that level of turnover is possible, affordable or advisable.

Some players will improve under a new regime; always happens

The only ones i would let go are: Rogic, Christie, Edouard(because of contract run down), Brown, Bitton, Boli

Everyone else gets a chance to impress the new person; inc Bayo , Schved, Barkas, Johnston

I’d keep Griffiths too. Will always score a few goals in the League

Time will tell if last night’s Tweet was the opening salvo of an offensive, or, was it of the fire and fall back variety.

My preferred course of action would be to attack the foundation of Their existence. Force the authorities to act on the Lie.

To do this, we, the club, have to categorically state the New Club truth and when the subsequent disrepute charge is issued, defend it in the courts.

Any truth in this matter is on court records, I believe when Green was up before the judge,

The Lie has no more veracity or backing than a Grim(m) Fairy Tale.

We must follow through as they are terrified of the legal system.

  20. 2018 Old Firm Trademark Renewals

When renewing in 2018 it is (maybe) understandable that the club could have simply wanted to retain the Old Firm trademark in order to prevent its use by a commercial rival. What is harder to understand is why it had to apply for all 21 categories of goods and services that were included within the trademark rights of previous years.

To renew just one token category would have been enough to retain the THE OLD FIRM trademark name. More importantly, making this token gesture, as opposed to blatantly coupling up with such a pernicious organisation might have gone some way to convince cynics like me that we stood alone.

Last night’s tweet is pathetic and embarrassing.

  23. The Intellectual Property Office states that Celtic and Rangers are the registered joint owners of the terms “Old Firm” and “The Old Firm”.

Just last Tuesday the term “Old Firm” was renewed by both parties. The Intellectual Property Office website states: “Trademark has been renewed on 02/03/2021.”

Is it that Sheffield wednesday were not involved in talks??Neil Lennon said back in February Liam Shaw had signed a pre contract, and would be at Celtic Park this summer. There was talk of £300,000 to secure the lad’s release.

  25. Bit of a vicious circle we’re in.the more we complain and try to distance ourselves from them the more we get tied in with them thru SMSM..

If The Old Firm ever get into the EPL the trademark will be worth a lot of money

If DD was advised the only way into the EPL was as a package with that mob then he might have protected that package..as you say be worth a few bob

  27. garygillespieshamstring on

No issue with Sheffield wed not being involved. 6 months on contract it is fair game.

Might be a cross border development fee to be agreed but can’t see any other issue.

  28. Imo, THE way to encourage ST renewals would be to be seen to challenge the liquidated team at every opportunity, e.g by congratulating them on winning their first league championship.

It’s up to Celtic when they announce Shaw. It’s a case of the Wed chairman feeling his nose out of joint.

He knew it was going to happen, so it was between the player, his agent and Celtic. Celtic announced it, but didn’t do it via a joint statement, which upset the Wednesday chairman.

    A non story.
