There will be no end to it Celtic – unless you put an end to it

I bought my first tranche of Celtic shares in 1994 but when Fergus offered his shares to the fans (1999?) I was not in a position take up the offer.  Few of us did, as a consequence, Fergus sold most of his holding to Dermot Desmond.

It was a pity, as I liked the democratic feel of wider share ownership.  Subsequently, when the club needed money in 2001 and 2005, share offers were not taken up widely by the support, so perhaps share concentration was always likely.  When the club itself was in jeopardy the support dug deep, Fergus famously commenting on how those queuing up in 1994 to pay money for Celtic shares, clearly had little income.  The subsequent share issues were about rebuilding the squad and training complex, less emotive topics.

Still, it is important to me to be a shareholder, I know many of us feel the same.  We can call the executive to account and, as there are many thousands of us, we represent with wider support, immune from fads.

The Trust yesterday proposed shares are issued instead of refunds to season ticket holders, who were unable to attend in person this season.  In case it needs said, while we received rights to view games online, many families earned no incremental benefit for additional season tickets held in the same household.  Some families, including mine, paid for several tickets to get the exactly same service as a family with one ticket.  And on top of everything else, there was the football……

Unlike others, Celtic chose to offer a partial refund on tickets for last season to compensate for games not played.  That is not going to happen this season for a variety of reasons.  For a start, if the season completed, a refund (optional or otherwise) would not be due.  Most significantly, they spent the money.  Our ticket revenue is not just to maintain access to the stadium, it pays for Odsonne and his pals.  I doubt a single club in Europe will offer refunds – and if I’m being brutally honest with you, the only money I want to see leaving the club is for a new manager and players.

I suspect the Trust feel the same, which is no doubt why they proposed a share issue.  It is a question worth asking – and it keeps wider share ownership on the agenda.  I can also imagine the next shareholders meeting if shares were issued on a voluntary basis!  Anyway, if you can afford it, buy shares, own a piece of Celtic (that will forever unlikely be diluted to compensate for poor value from the season ticket).

The Scottish Government is the recipient of an angry letter from Newco on social distancing measures, or the lack thereof.  “When you swim with the sharks”, springs to mind.  They are a social and health risk to the country.  Put them back in their box at the first opportunity, Celtic.  It was correct the club Tweeted last night that they are not half of anything, in reference to their bus supplier’s “half of the Old Firm” comment.  A whole lot more clarity on this and related matters would be appreciated.  If the bus suppliers gets away with dragging our name into social unrest elsewhere, what damage could the sanitaryware company do?  A line has been crossed.  There will be no end to it Celtic – unless you put an end to it……

    2018 Old Firm Trademark Renewals

When renewing in 2018 it is (maybe) understandable that the club could have simply wanted to retain the Old Firm trademark in order to prevent its use by a commercial rival. What is harder to understand is why it had to apply for all 21 categories of goods and services that were included within the trademark rights of previous years.

The first part of your statement is correct despite what many people on here are saying. Registering in multiple classes also protects the owner from chancers who will produce “Old Firm” clothing or mugs or food/drink etc. It is easier and cheaper to shut them down that way than to have to challenge them in court because they were left to go ahead with the use of the words in a category not associated with sport which was not protected.

This is a CQN storm in a (not Old Firm branded) teacup.

TOMTHETIM 2.35pm – I’d wait until the football authorities (will it be the SFA or SPFL?) try to officially recognise Sevco’s first title as their 55th. Then Celtic should take THEM to court and blow the whole charade out of the water.

Imo, THE way to encourage ST renewals would be to be seen to challenge the liquidated team at every opportunity, e.g by congratulating them on winning their first league championship.

Spot on,a fait acompli for the Board?

I have e-mailed John-Paul Taylor praising the `not half of anything ` tweet and also expressing a similar point of view to yours above.

  8. Of course, ernie might argue that challenging the existence of the OF would not be in DD`s interest .ie No OF = fewer ST`s whereas at least some supporters feel that said challenge would lead to a positive uptake of ST`s.

    Try 3?

    1) Celtic played Dukla Prague,Den Bosch and Real Sociedad in 2015 friendlies. On which Scottish ground did these games take place?

    2) May 25th,May 6th May?? Fill in missing numbers?

3)If the Celtic v Leeds 1970 EC semi final had went to a play off, which english ground would have staged the game?

●Apologies if Q3 was offered recently.I forget if I actually used the question.

  10. 3 pure guesses Joe,

old heid is raddled, I cant even remember us playing friendlies in scotland in 2015, but here goes

    1) Easter Road

    2) May 1st – dates we wont things in 67 ……………….. big ears, league, cup

    3) St James Park, Newcastle

  11. FWIW, I think jack Hendry is a very good player who couldn`t cope with playing for Celtic. If his experiences in Australia and Belgium have restored his confidence,I feel we could have an excellent central defender there.

It was 67-68 and Benfica made the final at Wembley in 68, and I was so upset when MU won it because it meant that Celtic were no longer the only team from these isles to have done so. I also don’t want English teams to do well – that immaturity has lasted tom this day – sad I know. Also remember being annoyed when the MU fans were interviewed (cant remember where) before the game and sang, ‘we are, we are, we are the Busby boys’ – I don’t think they saw any connection to you know what.

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Quick search on the interweb reveals Celtic’s current market capitalisation to be c. £104m.

I don’t know what percentage is held by “ordinary” supporters?

    At a guess, 10 – 15% ???

It’s all just telephone numbers but …

… if the entire season ticket and merchandise purchasing communities

Who inject (directly or indirectly) £50m plus per annum into our club ….

purchased shares to 5% of that value …

    over e.g. four years

Even allowing for some reasonable share price inflation ?

I reckon (fag packet calcs) “ordinary” supporter shareholding increases to c. 25% ?

And, a position of influence for the Trust?

  14. Why are neither us not THEM playing this weekend?

Their luck continues. Away in Europe, no game at the weekend.

  17. Last Sunday according to the images, Police Scotland literally gave the Hun Horde a Police Escort from Ipox to George Square…I assume that was the route, and I also assume that some Hun has told the Police WHERE they intended to head to before setting off ?

Even IF I am wrong about where they set off from and where headed to…the FACT remains that the Cops did NOTHING to stop them.

IF the next game against the Hun is ALLOWED to go ahead….apart from the obvious problems that will arise with the Hun Hordes intending to turning up outside Celtic Park….and their Meeting Place is George Square for example prior to kick off…..

What will the Cops do about this scenario..IF hundreds/thousands of the Hun turn up…and state WHERE they intend to head to…in this case Celtic Park ? The Cops have shown that they are incapable of dealing with this Mob, and that is NOT going to improve on March 21st IF the game goes ahead ?

Sturgeon and her Ministers SHOULD be asking the Cops…WHY were the Hun Mob not only allowed to March from ” A to B” last Sunday…but also with a Police Escort…as the LAWS of the Land were being broken ?

Sturgeon SHOULD be asking the Police Chief how they intend to PREVENT this Mob from another illegal gathering and illegally Marching on March 21st….IF the Police Chief comes up with some sort of ” Plan”…He SHOULD then be asked ” WHY wasnt the very same Plan in force last Sunday as everyone and their Dug KNEW that Hun Mob had planned on Meeting” ?

    HH.

  18. IF the Polis caught me creeping out of a Bank with bags of money at 3am…Would they…

    A) Arrest me for breaking the Law ?

    OR

    B) Help me with the bags of cash into their Patrol Car and then they give me a Police Escort home ?
