There will be no end to it Celtic – unless you put an end to it

I bought my first tranche of Celtic shares in 1994 but when Fergus offered his shares to the fans (1999?) I was not in a position take up the offer.  Few of us did, as a consequence, Fergus sold most of his holding to Dermot Desmond.

It was a pity, as I liked the democratic feel of wider share ownership.  Subsequently, when the club needed money in 2001 and 2005, share offers were not taken up widely by the support, so perhaps share concentration was always likely.  When the club itself was in jeopardy the support dug deep, Fergus famously commenting on how those queuing up in 1994 to pay money for Celtic shares, clearly had little income.  The subsequent share issues were about rebuilding the squad and training complex, less emotive topics.

Still, it is important to me to be a shareholder, I know many of us feel the same.  We can call the executive to account and, as there are many thousands of us, we represent with wider support, immune from fads.

The Trust yesterday proposed shares are issued instead of refunds to season ticket holders, who were unable to attend in person this season.  In case it needs said, while we received rights to view games online, many families earned no incremental benefit for additional season tickets held in the same household.  Some families, including mine, paid for several tickets to get the exactly same service as a family with one ticket.  And on top of everything else, there was the football……

Unlike others, Celtic chose to offer a partial refund on tickets for last season to compensate for games not played.  That is not going to happen this season for a variety of reasons.  For a start, if the season completed, a refund (optional or otherwise) would not be due.  Most significantly, they spent the money.  Our ticket revenue is not just to maintain access to the stadium, it pays for Odsonne and his pals.  I doubt a single club in Europe will offer refunds – and if I’m being brutally honest with you, the only money I want to see leaving the club is for a new manager and players.

I suspect the Trust feel the same, which is no doubt why they proposed a share issue.  It is a question worth asking – and it keeps wider share ownership on the agenda.  I can also imagine the next shareholders meeting if shares were issued on a voluntary basis!  Anyway, if you can afford it, buy shares, own a piece of Celtic (that will forever unlikely be diluted to compensate for poor value from the season ticket).

The Scottish Government is the recipient of an angry letter from Newco on social distancing measures, or the lack thereof.  “When you swim with the sharks”, springs to mind.  They are a social and health risk to the country.  Put them back in their box at the first opportunity, Celtic.  It was correct the club Tweeted last night that they are not half of anything, in reference to their bus supplier’s “half of the Old Firm” comment.  A whole lot more clarity on this and related matters would be appreciated.  If the bus suppliers gets away with dragging our name into social unrest elsewhere, what damage could the sanitaryware company do?  A line has been crossed.  There will be no end to it Celtic – unless you put an end to it……

Going to watch 2nd half of PSG v Barca.

Or if recent CL history is anything to go by, you could almost start calling it “doing a Barca”. 🤣

  4. For years now the way that police all over the world have handled situations like at the weekend in Glasgow by not making arrests unless necessary and then by intelligence and cctv arrest all people breaking the law of the land.

A bit like Capitol Hill-in fact the exact same.

Why no arrests or intention of arrests from the SG or the Police?

Fair play to Glasow City Council and STV who have been the only ones to slam the Klan.

Imagine Brown or Griffiths or Bolingoli had acted like the Sevco players in the last few days.

We ARE treated different in 2021.

  5. I agree Laxalt, been watching alot of civil liberties US films recently and it reminded me of today, here in Scotland. Even if the Black community achieved a victory (and by that I simply mean attaining basic Human Rights) their victories and celebrations were always temperred by a sore loser supremacist- whether it was a cop, council official, Senator they tended to remind them they were still second class citizens in their eyes by some demeaning or pedantic act of suppression.

We (not just our supporters but the club itself) I feel almost have be apologetic in victory and often have to much more careful in fear of arrest, scrutiny or degrading abuse.

I know it’s “only” football but, because of changes and improvements to Equality Law Uk wide and stricter employment law and perhaps more Catholics from Irish decent or simply less masons practising and progressing to some areas of the judiciary-football is all they have left to project their feelings of supremacy. It’s the vessel the establishments use to passive aggressively attack our values, identity and culture heritage. IMO.

  6. Tell thum we’re no’ playin’…………….

and when anyone asks why, tell them……………………

  7. I would add, feel very fortunate not to be in the same position as those African Americans in their plight. They had (perhaps still have) and incredible fight against persecution, i just feel comparisons can be drawn without being to the same scale, clearly.

An T – amusing memories of Juve trouncing Oldco.

At that time I worked in a very large office building in Glasgow which was close to a well known bookmakers outlet.

Day of the game their published fixed odds coupon (single match bets accepted) had Juve at EVEN MONEY to win the tie.

(Oldco announced earlier that day that their first choice goalie was out and Billy Thomson would be in goal).

    The office emptied.

    The bookies “enjoyed” record footfall

    …. and lost a packet.

Footnote to the story – one ex colleague put

high double figures on Juve to win 0-3.

I can imagine his joy when Ravanelli put them 3 nil up in the 88th minute.

I can only imagine his despair when Marocchi made it four.

    Children – it’s a mug’s game. Avoid it !

  9. £100m in losses to win the Scottish league to stop a record nobody outside ‘Glasgow’ could GAF about.

Celtic will bring in an eye-watering £70m in transfer fees this summer.

We will appoint appoint a top notch manager/coach ( I think it will be Stevie Clarke) and he will have £40m in transfer fees and, more importantly, £400k per week in wages, to build a team- a dream job for most managers.

The Sevys should start saving up to stop our next 10 in a row.

  10. Did Juve not play as close as you could get to a 424 formation?

Enjoyable nights, 4-0 and 4-1 grasshoppers pumped them too in that group i think…

  11. Remember when the offensive behavior at football act was brought in Sheriffs often concluded that supporters comments were not in breach of the law, but, in fact, it appeared simply that the Police officers were offended. Mad.

  14. SFtBs @ 5:33 PM,

I understand that continuing to buy yhe trading rights to the O** F*** name might be just a defensive move but Dharma Bam @ 1:16 pm asked the most interesting question

If the dead club had lost their rights to this term because they’re dead then why did we re-sell the rights to the new club/Clumpany to resurrect that? Why did we not keep sole ownership?

I’m not at all sure why Celtic supporters don’t Get It!!

Rangers have just won their 55th title and still Celtic fans are in denial. Crazy!!

Now, the Old Firm trade mark…

Sometime back it was registered by Celtic and Rangers who each have a 50/50 share in it.

When Rangers went into administration Celtic didn’t have any rights to get Rangers share of this joint venture – why would they?

All Rangers i/p* was transfered to the Newco. I believe Mr Ashcroft had control of this as collateral at one time.

When the Scottish FA, The SPL, The SFL and the Scottish Football Clubs agreed to an elaborate plan to conjoin Oldco Rangers and Newco Rangers to ensure their was continuity of The Rangers Football Club the continuity of the old firm was also secured.

The Rangers Football Club have as much legal right to their half of the old firm trade mark as Celtic period.

Also there’s this myth by Celtic supporters that oldco was “Rangers Football Club” and newco is “”The” Rangers Football Club.”

    Watch my lips…

Rangers have always, always been “The Rangers Football Club”

And anyway, if Rangers ceased to exist there wouldn’t be any old firm anyway.

Celtic and Rangers are obviously the two halves of the old firm. And Celtic were party to the agreements to ensure Rangers were resurrected and the old firm continued.

Why is it so difficult to understand.

    *I/p – Intellect Property

  16. Seems the police don’t want the Derby games to go ahead, and the clubs cant guarantee fans won’t turn up.

  17. Bada – so we are now drawn in – only one club should have been held responsible after the weekend – now it will be ‘old firm fans’

  18. Jinky – correct………….

The perfect result for scoddland- it blames us while deflecting blame from hundom.

You can guarantee Shortie will do their piece to camera oootside Celtic Park giving the impression it’s a Celtica problem.

  19. Martim1980 –

If I remember rightly, back then Juve played a really flexible 4-4-2/diamond/4-3-3 system. Usual back 4, with a more defensive right back (Porrini) and flying left back (Torricell) and two CBs (Ferrara and someone else – thinking a South American or Eastern European hard so and so who got sent off a few times).

Midfield was Deschamps and Paulo Sousa in holding/deep lying playmaker roles. On the left was Del Piero who would drift up front or into the 10 position and Conte was on the right and would tuck in to tighten up the midfield when Del Piero floated. Vialli and Ravanelli up front (looking back they weren’t an obviously natural partnership as quite similar).

Outside of Celtic, that was the team I loved to watch – had a bit of everything: solid at the back; good passing team; bit of excitement and flair…

  20. Spidey great analysis, I stand corrected. They were a great side to watch.

They appeared a lot fitter than other teams, were there not rumours though they had, allegedly had experimented in “enhancements”.

Wouldn’t be like Juve to seek an unfair advantage…😉

  21. The Game should NOT go ahead…..and Celtic Board should tell Scotgov and polis to call off both remaining Sevco games even to giving them the meaningless points….. If we don’t We again will be portrayed as “ones as bad as the other”.

…Remember the Shame Game where we did nothing wrong but we’re hauled in front of the SFA as the other half…..we should have told them then to shove it …and should do that now…They are the problem….have nothing to do with them their support and these games …let the Glasgow Polis deal with them and protect the Celtic Way and stadium ….

  22. Martim1980 – yeah there were definite rumours around “vitamins and supplements” and obviously they’re not the most honest of clubs. On the pitch they were great though – really should have won more than 1 CL back then!

  23. Martim1980 – also I don’t think you were wrong – I remember they’re “chase the game” move was to bring a winger (DiLivio maybe) on for Conte so it would have been close to a 4-2-4 at times

  24. Spidey, their defensive midfielders and their intelligence made that possible to attack with less risk.

Although Dortmund and Lambert showed them eventually.

Celtic had as much right to acquire old co’s interest in the trade mark as new co did.

Celtic could have approach the administrator, or liquidator, not sure which was involved, to acquire old co’s interest in the trade mark. That would have given Celtic total control. I wonder if them made that approach?

There is no such legal entity as ‘The Rangers Football Club’. The last time there was an unincorporated association running a football club at Ibrox Victoria was on the throne.

I’ve no idea how much we’ll bring in from transfer fees but even if your figure is bang on the money, there is no way our new manager will be spending £40m – not in the current climate.

  28. Martim1980 – yeah, Deschamps and Sousa were amazing at what they did! They sold Sousa to Dortmund that summer (Zidane replaced him) who, with Lambert, promptly won it again. Sousa was a lovely player, the Pirlo/Xavi of his day!
