Think what you will of Celtic, Gladback won’t fancy it

284

Playing away domestically after a Champions League away game is statistically the time you are most likely to drop points, so Manchester City’s defeat at Tottenham was unsurprising.  The manner of Barcelona’s defeat at Celta de Vigo, 4-3 after being 3-0 down at halftime, was distinctly out of character, but showed signs of their exertions in Germany on Wednesday.

Borussia Monchengladback’s 4-0 defeat at Schalke, who were bottom of the Bundesliga having lost all previous five games, was the shock of German football this week.  Gladback have one game before coming to Celtic Park, home to Hamburg, who took over Schalke’s mantle at the bottom of the table, with one point from six games this season.

Borussia are the only team from Celtic’s Champions League group who will be rattled by their weekend reversal; Barcelona and Manchester City will take the defeat in their stride.  It’s unlikely they will drop points to Hamburg on 15th October.  Their defeat to Barcelona was the first competitive game at home they’ve failed to win since January, while it’s been straight away defeats this season for Hamburg, but as we know, playing bottom of the league is a no-win scenario for a Champions League team.

There will be a hangover from that 4-0 defeat, one which will be allowed to fester for a fortnight.  Think what you will of Celtic, but the prospect of travelling to Glasgow in two weeks will not be relished in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Before heading off for the Great Scottish Run yesterday I read through the donations to the Celtic Foundation.  There’s nothing more effective than putting the wind at your back than knowing a lot of people put whatever they could afford into supporting the Foundation’s cause.

It was a brilliant day.  The green competitors’ t-shirts with the Foundation’s Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty written across the back were storming through the streets of Glasgow in force.  Well done to all.

Thanks to everyone who supported all of us.  The MyDonation’s page hasn’t closed, yet, but this will be the last call, honestly!

Thanks also the lady who while out pushing a go-chair with her child in town yesterday, took off my shoe and bent back my toe.  Over and above the call of duty – but it was that kind of day.

“If OBFA is repealed what examples of strict liability are there that arent covered under existing laws?

Im confused about what kind of crimes OBFA “covered” that we are talking about?

or are you saying that precisely because of strict liability it wont be repealed?”

Maggie, I think the strict liability ruling is being used as a threat. The message is that the Police and the creators of this legislation want to either bring football under their rule or persuade the football authorities to do their dirty work voluntarily. A club threatened with strict liability laws being proposed might be wiling to settle for supporting the existing OBaF legislation or , at least, reduce the level of their opposition if they know that what lies around the corner is gonna be worse still.

However UEFA are not fond of politicians interfering with football regulations so they would be opposed to Holyrood led sanctions on section or ground closure, or docking of points for misdemeanours. But SNP Government might like to see the SFA or SPFL adopt these proposed measures and UEFA don’t mind national associations taking draconian measures (however bigoted or biased the national association may be).

I suspect that we might win the battle to repeal the OBaF Act but the signs are that the SNP government is not going to back off this defeat quietly and is going to bring forward strict liability measures or persuade the SFA/SPFL to adopt Strict Liability as the price to be paid.

I know that I will be considered to have a bias in these views but I think such determination to not lose face or power is one of the classic signs of an insecure view of ourselves. Not being able to admit mistakes is one of the Scottish Cringe signs, because mistakes are the kind of thing that Westminster, and Westminster only, does.

Still, one fight at a time- Let’s win the OBaF Act repeal first because it is not yet a done deal.

You`re obviously a fair man who is uncomfortable with the kind of gossip that often surrounds the departure of a personality .Particularly one who seemed as likeable as Ronny.

I`m afraid sentiment was a secondary consideration for me , but let`s not rake over the coals except that lessons must be learned .

You may well be right about Broony , however , as captain , he has the right to have an opinion and express it.

It would probably have been kinder not to.

Nevertheless , Broony spoke for me when he describes his frustration about the last two seasons.

Watched Spurs beat City yesterday and couldn’t help thinking we would have won easily on Wednesday if Wanyama had played in Nirs Position.

Really. Why don’t we sign Wanyama, oh yes he would cost 30M and he wanted to leave.

I also recall us conceding many a goal from central positions when Wanyama was playing, Huns at Ibrox, 3 against ST Mirren at Hampden. You are showing your naivety with the above statement.

Funny that none of the goals we conceded on Wednesday was from Nirs position or any fault of Nirs.

Don’t let that get in the way of some good old fashioned Bitton bashing.

Also the position Brendan thought most needed strengthening was attacking midfielder, again we ignore that, doesn’t fit.

Sorry Fanatic just thought I’d bring a bit of balance to your Bitton bashing.

Sid, I’m with you on this one. None of the goals can be attributed to Bitton’s defensive lapses; over and above that, he played the telling passes to Rogic and Tierney to set up the 2nd and 3rd goals.

I’m hopeful that his family will not push him away from Celtic. Time will tell.

  15. Prediction…….

All this p#sh about – the ACT ????

Yeez can go to as many meetings, peddle as many petitions as yeez like.

Bottom line is – If yeez urny being harassed by the ACT then, yeez will be harassed by another ACT and, Celtic PLC-Hierarchy will lend they’re support of the ACT – on your behalf – so that ‘they’ will be seen to be on the ‘right’ side of the law and, all of you will be on the wrong side of the law – maybe there are some elements to, justify your being on the wrong side of the law ????

    For instance….

Yeez break the laws of – naivety…..imho.

    Ah mean,…..

WTF has ballads / songs the likes of, the Roll Of Honor, Bobby Sands, Grace etc….have to do with the team on the pitch ???? – Thee most important area of the club….imho.

Do these songs make the team play better ?

The songs are brilliant in my book.

But, do we need to sing 4, 5, 6 long-winded verses ‘all’ the time ???

Ah mean, where’s the cuteness ???

    The Celtic-Cuteness ????

Ah mean, Mr Stein was well aware like, King Kojo was that, the ‘only’ way that Celtic will strike a blow to the establishment will be when the Celtic team on the pitch, cuffs the huns team on the pitch.

Ah mean, what else matters ????

Ah mean, yeez will never win in City Hall when, yeez have a Celtic PLC-Hierarchy in control of your club who will jump into bed with the establishment so that, ‘they’ will get an easy ride off the law enforcers whilst, the very folk who have financed the PLC-Hierarchies gravy train will be lifted at 6 am having the threat of they’re futures wrecked by the PLC-Hierarchies, establishment pals as they level the arrest count.

Ah mean, the PLC-Hierarchy lead a charmed existence.

They’ve been financed by a Celtic support who’ve been gulled by a squirrel called Brendan who’ll, probably win a shooting-fish-in-a-barrel-treble, he might land a couple of punches on some chins in Europe but, he’ll be offski as soon an EPL team flashes they’re nickers at him and, the PLC-Hierchy will revert to type and, hit yeez with another managerial-puppet like Ronny.

So, it’s simple….yeez will ‘never’ win in City Hall until, Celtic FC is controlled by a rebellious board of Celtic supporters who don’t / won’t jump into bed with the establishment,

Until then,….yeez can FACen dream on.

And on and on and on and on……..

    …off-oot….

  16. I managed to read the words attributed to Scott Brown re Ronny and I cannot see what the fuss is about.

At this time last year both Scott and Leigh were giving ringing endorsements to the press about life under Ronny, including praise of the training. Sure, just over a year ago, the bold and forthright Chris Sutton was changing his tune to one of admiration, before swinging with the pack once more when the dressing room unrest became evident again.

Why should I not believe that Scott is only making the same noises he made towards Ronny as a positive talking club captain? The real test of his (and the squad’s) feelings will come when we hit a period of adversity. Will Leigh react like Kris did if he does not replace Moussa regularly? Will Liam H and Ryan C complain about a lack of opportunities? Will Paddy Roberts complain about being replaced by a cowardly, non-back-tracking waste of a jersey with no end product? Not, while we are winning, they won’t.

Mussolini’s nephew made the quote about “Victory has 100 fathers. No-one wants to recognise failure.” (based on a much older Roman quote)

Well, pro football is like that. Everything is rosy while you are being picked and the team is winning. Lose the first factor and you get a few grumbles that can be dismissed as sour grapes. Lose the 2nd factor, however, and the complaints sound legitimate to fans ears because they chime with their own views.

It is slowly becoming a Celtic myth (just like the Willo window myth) that we were terrible under Ronny; we were not. We had a pretty good turn around in season 1 while we had VVD and Jason- robbed of a treble and in Europe after Xmas- success by any Celtic standards- especially for a first season manager. We DID had a dreadful 2nd year without them but it was not 2 years of constant failure.

We will only be able to see how poor RD is as a coach/manager when he has had time to work beyond Celtic for a few years. We will only know how good Brendan is going to be when he has had similar time to put his FULL mark on this club.

The early signs are very very promising but we should be a wee bit more careful in rushing to judgement.

Look at previous Celtic write-offs- Scott Brown, Fraser Forster, James Forrest, Jozo Simunovic and Tom Rogic. They were the favoured scapegoats of several CQN rs but they have not been subject to much criticism these last two months.

Will that last if there are 2 or 3 adverse European results or if we fail to secure a win at Hampden vs the Zombies? That’s all it takes for fans and players to start feeling there’s something wrong after all.

  18. About a month ago, Celtic announced that the club had been served with a charge from UEFA for the supporters’ display of an “illicit flag” during the game v Hapoel Be’er Sheva at Celtic Park.

The statement went on to say that the club would be making no further comment “at this time” and restricted the statement to a confirmation of the charge. I commented then that it was unusual for the club not to attempt to mitigate the offence by publicly condemning the offenders in advance of the UEFA hearing.

Now, here we are a month later, and a week after the punishment was handed down, and Celtic have yet to utter a single word against the Celtic Park Palestine protest.

    good post, cautionary tale indeed

The signs are very good under BR and Scott Brown’s comments merely underline that there probably was dressing room unrest under RD, who stayed way too faithful to Scott playing him whilst injured.

Motivational or coaching skills whatever it is, just about everyone could be said to be playing better than they where this time last year, and the three main BR signings have all hit the ground running.

Stuart Armstrong and James Forrest no longer fill the problem position because Scott Sinclair plays the role with the proper attritbutes, and Christie, MacGregor and Henderson are all champing at the bit for a game.

Both full backs Mikel and KT are playing out of their skin, Sviatchenko is a rock, and Simunovic looks ready to to rotate with Toure? One lone gunman up front, and yet who could pick between Dembele and Griffiths?
