This guy was the real deal

I had to smile at Simon Donnelly’s comparison of Henrik Larsson to Kenny Dalglish. Until Henrik came along, The New Dalglish was the reference point for any great prospect. And a few not-so-great ones.

Simon himself was one prominent recipient of this title. Back in 1994 Lou Macari’s Celtic were as bad as we’d been since the 50s when the teenage Donnelly burst onto the scene with five goals in the final 12 league games of the season. He was famously hailed as the new Dalglish, a comparison which was shown to be absurd during the barren season which followed.

When Henrik pitched up in Glasgow in 1997 all those comparisons must have crystallised for Simon. This guy was the real deal.

Although some starts shone brighter than others, both of them played their part in the historic title win in 1998. Celtic fans will never know a time like that again. When Simon, Henrik and friends gather for the Foundation game in May, more than a few of us will recall that titanic season.

On the subject of memorable league title wins…….

To true. My boss is an English guy and even he was glad to read that the bill to withdraw right of permanent residency to EU citizens after Brexit had been defeated. The arrogance of it, going into complex negotiations on your country’s financial future and you threaten the citizens of the very economic bloc you wish to trade freely with.

Suppose they should be grateful that “England” is prepared to sell them all those Japanese and Korean cars they build.

Video ref seems to be working well in the France-Spain game. Hasn’t added half an hour to the game time as predicted by some!

Mind you I’m sure the SFA could have found one that would have – ahem – “missed” the Meekings handball!

The English have zero regard for no other country, never mind ireland, than England.

They still say “England” when they mean Britain or UK. the “little Englander” mentality still waives the rules when it comes to “Johnny Foreigner”

    ===========================================================================

Disappointing that you feel able to generalise about the English in such an uncomplimentary way.

England is a multicultural country .

    Millions have come.

Millions more are trying to enter.

    Why would that be ?

  6. Great use of technology in France v Spain.

Second goal by Spain deemed offside by linesman. Is he Scottish?

Ref chats on mic to video room and correctly gives the goal.

The SFA have announced that they will rush to implement by 2100 or earlier if the rangers three win the SPL.

I got into the habit of listening to BBC Radio during the day over the last year or so ( self employed so I like having the old radio going in the background)

Some of the discussions about Brexit are interesting, plenty of decent sensible people who can see it for the nonsense it is,but also plenty of old retired wing commander types ( and their less articulate batmen/butler types) who basically say things like “they need us more than we need them etc”

Anyhow my wife says its the ole West Brit in me coming out that has me tuning in to “Mainland” radio

  9. Unbelievable that this Spanish team haven’t won the last couple of major tournaments, they play football that is head and shoulders above any other world team.

  10. 38 seconds for that correct decision to be made, even quicker.

Took less than a minute from the goal being scored for ref to officially signal offside, and award free-kick, having consulted the video ref.

Quicker than dealing with opposition players’ appeals in many cases, and worth those seconds to get the right decision.

With the amount of time wasted by cheats and divers, the time is nothing, you need the right decision, not a quick decision. The SFA will have a statement ready in the morning, saying it will be too expensive, Stuart Dougal being dusted down as we speak.HH

  12. In other news, was talking to my wee sis, not Dena as she is my big sis but wee compared to me if you get my drift, and it seems her son entered the Celtic mother’s day competition describing his “mother and son” experience at Celtic Park and won two tickets to the Kilmarnock game. Now the fun begins trying to get there, busses are full, the ferry and flight prices are outrageous but she is determined to get there.

Way back in the mists of time I was doing an Open University history course and one of the first things our tutor pointed out was the continual use of “England” in place of “Britain” in historical documents like memoirs, newspapers and movies.

One example is the movie “The man who never was” about Operation Mincemeat. The leading character tells the grieving family of the corpse they need that he would be doing England a great service, the father replies “my son was a proud Scotsman”

Tell you what, you stop telling lies about Ireland and the Irish and I will stop telling the truth about England.
