This is just the next step for The Celtic Triangle

493

You win five-in-a-row and go 24 points clear but it’s not until you propose to build an architecturally pleasing hotel and museum that the penny begins to drop with some that you are, in fact, an exceptionally well run football club.

I loved reading how we are interpreted on the other side of the city in yesterday’s CQN Magazine article, Simply Depressed:

“Commercially trolling us now. Light years ahead in income plans.

“It’s a source of revenue (and a fantastic bit of PR)….. It can pull an entire local community together and actually create new followers.

“If we ever get our act together, it will take years if at all to get anywhere near them financially, we can slaughter Lhiewell (sic.) all we want, but the bottom line is he is delivering for them.

“It’s a good initiative, having a hotel allows you to have certain events that were not previously possible. Media and corporate sponsorship will increase, new hospitality packages will be created, money from concerts will increase, supporters will hire function rooms and stay the nights more often.

“Just feel we are getting left behind commercially and will be seen as the poor football relation in Glasgow…this one highlights the growing gap between us and them it’s depressing.”

Pulling this together has taken years. Internal voices have dampened expectations during this period, a few times over the years I’ve heard: “There’s a long way to go, remember “floating pitches and super-casinos”” – a valuable lesson, thanks, Sir David. Celtic didn’t want to break ranks on this until the necessary money and commercial partnerships were lined up.

Don’t think this will see The Celtic Triangle finished, either, this is just the next step. The club have learned lessons from every noteworthy stadium of every sport in the world. European club football facilities miles behind where top US sports are at present.

We’re not there yet, but we’re on the road, and this is one journey that’s very enjoyable.

I cannot see that there are any moral issues around Celtic’s management of tax liabilities and to say “It strikes me that for many of you morals only apply to someone else – i.e. those attached to other clubs, using EBTs etc. but not to Celtic. “Giving away” tax” is disingenuous even for you.

Celtic have not been involved in any form of tax evasion (to my knowledge) and when the use of an EBT was evident they sought advice and made the appropriate changes and restitution.

Celtic’s accountants legally use the current taxation laws to benefit the business (therefore the Club) and, it would appear, pay all taxes due.

As for the transparency, Celtic have already stated (on more than one occasion) that all profits will be re-invested in the Club. Unless they publish their forthcoming business plans (and give others the jump on them), what else do you want them to say?

Put (over)simply, tax is charged on profit.

    Profit=income-costs.

Money invested on infrastructure, plant, etc is a cost. As such,it is deducted from our income like all other costs such as wages, consumables.

Dunno why NEGANON has his knickers in a twist over it,he knows the above to be true.

I take it we will all go on our way rejoicing should the Big Tax Case be decided in THEIR legal favour.

Problem with tax is that there should be no legal means of avoidance, evasion or just plain dodging.

QUONNO there are tax regulations that individuals and companies use to maximise profit and income whilst reducing tax liabilities. Nothing in that is illegal. I have no issue with that.

If th Government change existing or create new tax legislation then tax management will also change. I have no issue with that either.

Abusing legislation to illegally evade tax is another matter. Rangers (IL) did that. I have an issue with that.

  17. Evening all

Just on to say that after Next Wednesday I shall be taking a break from contributing to CQN until Easter Sunday. I cannot imagine I will be missed in the way that Aw Naw and Kitalba (and others) are missed and recognise that I am hardly one of the most exhilerating of contributors to the blog . In recent months my most significant contribitions have been to be compared to Ally McCoist by the Cardinal Ximenez of the Bush (BPOI) and to incur the wrath of the esteemed Green Man after I was a bit grumpy with him.

I am really enjoying this season and yet I have not enjoyed quite a lot on here in recent months. The spats of a fortnight ago really p**sed me off and at times whilst I am impressed with the knowledge on display here some of the contributors can be a bit , well , overbearing and at times condescending especially on political matters. I cannot even begin to bear the thought of how this place will be should the Supreme Court rule against HMRC.

I am though goung to try something more positive during my Lenten Abstinence than just giving up CQN – I am intending to read all of the New Testament. I am familiar with much of it but I have not read it in its entirety. I have taken my faith for granted in recent years and it is I feel it is time to revitalise it and can think of no better means of reconnecting than by going to the source. And as someone who is fairly well read it is a disgraceful omission from my list of books read. I do not quite know where this will lead but I am looking forward to it- and as one who has read all 7 volumes of Remembrance of Lost Time on the bus too and from work 2 years ago I am sure I can get away with reading it as I make my way too and from that place I earn my crust.

I shall though be on quite a lot before Ash Wednesday- I will try not to get red carded.

Jim, you are good till the First Sunday of Lent – when Lent actually begins. The days between Ash Wednesday and the First Sunday are preparatory days so your Lenten Fast or Abstinence can be delayed till then.

It gives you one more game to debate next weekend.

In a similar vein, the Lenten Fast or Abstinence doesn’t have to be applied on a Sunday as that is a day of Worship and as such isn’t strictly Lent. That would give you clearance for the huns game!

QUONNO, correct me if I am wrong, but I get the impression that your disquiet is with the actual taxation legislation and how it benefits and permits people and companies who can reduce their tax liability. That, IMHO, is another issue.

  24. For Neganon to come on here and criticise the morals of Celtic FC for deliberately using available cash reserves to finance capital expenditure projects, instead of simply letting it fall subject to increased taxation, merely betrays an agenda that stinks of criticising for the sake of it.

When a company reaches a position where the directors are faced with an abundance of cash in the bank as a result of excessive profits, and thereby a potential increased tax liability, it is normal for that company to say, now let’s look at spending money on some of the things we have only been able to talk about and wish for before now.

Celtic is no different. They have talked for some time about developing the stadium footprint, especially the idea of the museum. Now they can say, should we use the extra cash we have now to finance that project, or should we let it lie and face an increased tax liability.

It’s not a question of doing the right thing by the UK taxpayer, as Neganon so risibly asserts. Only a fool would believe that, or someone to entrenched in a hateful agenda that he can’t see the wood for the trees. Or as in Neganon’s case, both.

    There is no over simplification.

We employed an assistant manager as our manager after NL resigned and it took Celtic PlC 5 days to react to that publicly. NL in my opinion obviously didn’t like the plan.

And with foresight at the time many supporters including me did not think Ronny was capable of taking us to the next level. Basically because he was not employed to do so nor did he have the experience to do so. In the circumstance I have him my support as Celtic manager as it was IMO not his fault he was employed. But Pster the downsizing bonus collectors. Not a mistake of Peters but part of his plan to just do enough and keep collecting his bonus.

I don’t need all the facts confirmed. I will never be in a position to know all the facts. I have my view and my perception. Others will have theirs. That is their perogative. But like me their views and perceptions are also born without all the facts.

A fact though. Ronny was interviewed for the position of assistant manager to NL. Confirmed by NL. He was then employed as manager. That should never have happened and should never again happen at our club!
