This is THE Celtic story of 2016

“Dear Friends
“Celtic FC Foundation’s Annual Christmas Appeal reflects the very heart of the Club’s charitable and humble beginnings. It proudly follows in the footsteps of Brother Walfrid, providing comfort to those who need it most.”

So starts the letter from Celtic FC Foundation Head of Fundraising, Jane Maguire, as she confirmed this year’s Christmas appeal raised an incredible £220,000.

What are the consequences of this?

373 families in Glasgow, Coatbridge, Bellshill and Girvan, facing poverty and hardship, received significant help.

50 pensioners in the north and east of the city received a Christmas voucher, while kids in the same area received gifts through PEEK (Possibilities for Each and Every Kid).

130 clients of The Simon Community were given a Christmas lunch.

Children living with long-term health conditions at the Glasgow Children’s Hospital received what on some occasions will be their most significant Christmas gift.

Glasgow East Women’s Aid received a Christmas meal and gifts for families at the refuge.

Vulnerable refugees received support through the Scottish Refugee Council.

Glasgow City Mission’s Foodbank received support; they work with an average of 60 households per week.

Loaves & Fishes and Spirit Aid received Christmas hampers and toys for their work with homeless families.

The Wayside Club, Glasgow’s 365 day venue for the homeless received help in providing hot food for the very needy.

The Foundation and Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing (more on them later) split the cost of a £10,800 van to allow The Invisibles to carry out their important work.

Parkhead Salvation Army’s work was supported again this year.

St Roch’s Foundation’s meals for the homeless and pensioners between Christmas and New Year will be supported.

Glasgow Night Shelter, who provide food and a safe place for homeless refugees, some of societies more marginalised, were helped.

The Elpis Centre’s work for vulnerable young women was aided.

400 kids received a Christmas Party at Celtic Park.

Oban’s Hope Kitchen’s work to provide food and shelter has been funded.

The People’s Kitchen, Newcastle, who aid the homeless and vulnerable was helped – recognition, perhaps, of the incredible work the Tyneside No.1 Celtic Supporters Club do for the Foundation.

Children in Poverty Inverclyde received clothing, books and toys, as well as a trip to Santa’s Grotto, in consultation with another great club, the Greenock CSC.

Grampian Women’s Aid, Moray Firth Radio’s Cash for Kids, St John the Evangelist’s work (Cumnock), North Ayrshire Women’s Aid, Fife Gingerbread, the Eric Liddle Centre (Edinburgh) were all helped in their work.

Women’s Aid in Dublin, Belfast and Lisburn were each aided.

The Foundation are funding the Northern Ireland Hospice’ Teenage Weekends project for 2017.

Kids at the school in Whitechapel, London, where Bro Walfrid taught, were taken to a pantomime.
London and the South East’s needy were helped through various projects:
Cardinal Hume Centre
Neighbours of Poplar
Hillingdon Cherubs (neonatal work)
Readi-Bank Foodbank
Camden New Journal Appeal
Wimbledon Children’s Hospital – in connection with the Wimbledon CSC
The Brett Foundation
London North West Healthcare Charitable Fund
Our Barn (life skills, aged 16-25)
RNLI Ramsgate
Pilgrims Hospice
SVP Society Broadstairs

Kent Air Ambulance
Kent Foster Care Association
Happy Days Children’s Charity
Big Issue Foundation

The Foundation were asked to pass on gifts received, some of which went to Sean’s Trust – setup by our friend Linda Croker, who lost her husband and CQN’er St John Doyle, three years ago.

What did you do to achieve this?

Founding Fathers’ Fast, raised £1500 on one day.
Celtic Sleep Out – and incredible £80k.
Ghirls for Good, £22k

Bucket Collection, £13k

And nearly half the total was raised by direct donations – like the kind of things we do here throughout the year.

There is a part of this story which is seldom told.  People from the Foundation turned up at the door of some of these families this month with envelopes containing cash.  The reaction was often beyond gratitude or relief.  Many tears of joy are shed as feelings of helplessness find an anchor to cling to.

If you are cold and find warmth, hungry and are fed.  If you cannot provide for your children then receive shelter, toys and hope, you know the value of that £220,000.

This is THE Celtic story of 2016.

Why don’t you go out and educated those you claim to thick about it? RES12 hasn’t caught fire for one reason or another. Just cause it hasnt doesn’t mean that the folk that don’t care or know about it are thick.

Some may see the whole thing as trying to save the Church Hall that burnt down 4 years ago…..others may leave it to the PLC to make the right judgement….others may just want a better bus park……no rights, wrong or thickness.

  7. Incidentally, if the Board are so keen to keep the Support in its place, it was jolly nice of them to allow the inimitable Bertie Auld onto the field at half-time on Saturday (?) to enthusiastically proclaim that the fans ARE the Club.

Fantastic effort by the Celtic Foundation, and I note that there are a few that feel Celtic are taking some of the credit for this.

As i understand it, the staff that work for the Foundation are directly employed and paid for by Celtic and this is a significant six figure sum.

  11. Hot smoked the board love all those empty platitudes. The fans are the club but don’t even think about criticising the board of the fans are “criminally racist”. And if the fans point out corruption let’s ignore them, dismiss the, and string them along.

But let’s pay lip service to them.

But at the same time pass all our details to the cops and lie to us about it.

Great news, players, staff, supporters – take a bow.

Because of the huge figure raised it might even make mainstream news here in Sevconia

The Orwellian lie propagated by the SFA and SMSM that RFC (1872) played in Europe and somehow survived a liquidation event is at the heart of many issues in our game, and cannot go away until its fully addressed

  14. A simply magnificent effort form all those involved in the Celtic Foundation. These are very difficult times for too many people and it is impossible not to feel both deep sorrow and enjoy at the image of someone receiving an envelope that lets them provide for their family.

I, like many others on here I am sure, was born into a family with very little and we know what our parents endured on our behalves. I am deeply grateful to my parents for what they did and to the Celtic Foundation for supporting people like my parents when they are most in need.

I am genuinely in tears right now and wish my mum and dad where here right now so I could give them a hug.

Thanks you to Foundation for reminding me what’s important, where I came from and who helped me get to where I am today.

    Hail Hail

  15. The Battered Bunnet on

The marvellous sum of £220,000 raised during the Christmas is a relatively small part of the Foundation’s total income, which is around £1.5M each year (highest £1.8M in 2013).

The income derives from donations, legacies and staff ‘in kind’ support from Celtic. This allows the Foundation to undertake a wide range of both voluntary and programmed services. This latter aspect supports local programmes across the UK both financially – contributing to the costs – and professionally, making the Foundation’s staff and wider resources available to projects.

It’s a significant undertaking, impacting on the lives of those in greatest need, and making a significant contribution to communities up and down the country.

For those minded to slag off the plc as either not doing enough, or taking too much out of the club themselves, it ought to be borne in mind that in 2015, Celtic provided more charitable support, and in a more impactful way, than in all the years preceding Fergus combined.

And as Weeminger notes, none of it (or at best, little of it) would happen without the commitment of the current leadership or the enhanced status and reach of Celtic FC.

In the spirit of Christmas charity, I have a heid biler available free of charge for those in need. Let me know.

It is with great sadness I have come on the blog today to offer my deepest sympathies to Doc and all his family

Rest in Peace Malcolm Doherty ( Auld Doc) and May Perpetual Light shine upon you

Auld Doc sadly passed away last night

A founding member of the Bannockburn Celtic bus in 1973/4, and main man running our supporters club for many years

Doc, here’s a memory from 1979 – Auld Doc being my mentor and looking after me on our trip to Ipswich (Alan Hunter testimonial) – he arranges the cleaning of Ipswich Town centre as the fans leave, then at the half time power failure he issues all us young rebels with a beret as the band entertained us :-)

Thanks for some fantastic times following Celtic with you Auld Doc

Also please pray for Paddybhoy1888 and his family as he buries his young sister to date thoughts and prayers with all your sisters family Paddybhoy

    Hail Hail

  17. I have a personal thanks to the Celtic Foundation when they gave my own 15 minutes of fame 3 or 4 years ago. It was the last time I ran a 10K, the annual Glasgow one and I decided to raise sponsor money for the Foundation. On the day before the race started I noticed their tent and went over for a wee look. The girl said there were maybe 20 or 25 runners also raising funds that day and told me to pass on the word, if I spotted any of them, to pop into the tent after completing the race for some goodies.

So off I went, ran the race and from memory I managed a fairly decent time of around 42 or 43 minutes. Got my finishers medal and headed back over to the Foundation tent. The wee lassie said I was the first of the ‘foundation’ runners home and asked permission to take a photo to put onto Twitter. No problem I said and then headed home.

By the time I got home I had more than 30 emails, texts, etc from folk congratulating me on winning the Glasgow 10K! This was due to the fact that the girl simply posted my photo with the slightly misleading caption ‘First Runner Home in the Glasgow 10K!’

So well done on an absolutely outstanding sum raised this year.

    Back to workin’…..

  18. The £200,000 plus donation is a fantastic effort. Just think how much better it could have been if the club had been given rightful access to the CL instead of the cheats. The club might have been able to donate even more to charity from the CL money.

If the board refuse to pursue Res 12 (and this seems increasingly the case) then it confirms that the club has become nothing more than the green half of the Old Firm/Glasgow Derby brand. This is turns means that those who financially support the club are by default, also supporters of this tainted brand. Some will deny this as supporting the team/club is a drug/way of life to them but deep down we all know it to be true.

  22. To raise so much money and to help so many worthy causes is something the whole Celtic family can be justly proud of. Well done to all concerned.

It seems to me that no matter what Celtic do it will never be enough for some. Without Celtic there would be no Celtic Foundation. Do people look at, for instance, BBC children in need and say “it’s all well and good raising so much money from donations but the bbc is a very rich organisation it could fund all those projects without asking for others to donate.”. No they do not, people say “well done for all the hard work you put in” yet when it comes to Celtic they are castigated by the permanently affronted Brigade.

The Celtic Board are in no way perfect, see Hamiltontim, but they are not the devil incarnate either.

I hope everyone has a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

    ==========================

True about the recipients ( I once made a similar comment after a right dirty joke was told in a work Comic Relief fund raising day) but I think there is a danger here from split ethics between Foundation and PLC of which I think I have become a victim, that in turn has affected my charitable contribution.

My fear is that if we lose that ethical connection between Foundation and PLC we will no longer be the Celtic I signed up to supporting financially as well as emotionally.

Its a long story but this CQN Article

    http://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/a-very-personal-celtic/

with the very apt title A Very Personal Celtic (because the relationship each of us has with Celtic is personal) and the background to that at

    http://celticunderground.net/the-overseas-season-book-scheme-not-just-an-emotional-commitment/ sets the scene.

Now the charitable contribution was the creation and purchase an Overseas Season Ticket, the genesis and reason for which can be read at the links.

However this season I have not renewed my OST because I am convinced, as a result of the uncovering work of Res12, that the UEFA licence granted to Rangers in 2011 was done so improperly.

It was either as a result of a fraudulent statement by RFC or extreme negligence bordering on if not actual complicity on the part of the SFA in 2011 and disingenuousness/;duplicity on their part since to cover up.

This is where its not the journalist (so to speak) that risks being lazy but the readers because if anyone reads the background at the links provided, then they really should read what E Tims are saying at links I’ll post next, but with a caution.

If you do read it and think the narrative (not any conclusions but the narrative itself) sets out a case to be answered and conclude that so far the PLC are not addressing it , then you will face the moral dilemma I faced, as in how can I contribute to allowing others to watch a game I believe to be dishonest, never mind paying for the privilege myself?

Perhaps my mistake was in thinking back in 2012 that I was signing up to be part of something different in a world that appears to have abandoned ethics and am suffering the disillusion and disappointment at finding out that even at Celtic with its proclaimed ethos, that when the financial rubber hits the ethical road the latter is a goner, but as I said supporting Celtic is a personal relationship.

I’ll still watch and want us to sweep the Board every time but I wont be kidding myself that Celtic could be a force for ethical change in a world badly in need of such, unless of course they prove me wrong.

So far the PLC side have been found wanting in my eyes and that really really disappoints me because of the knock on effect on my type of support. I don’t expect everyone to feel the same because our relationship with Celtic is based on many factors.

As my old man used to say “You are too trusting son, so never expect anything and you will never be disappointed”

But I was never one to listen and as I hoped not to be disappointed I’ve been ready to take the chance and trust because when you do and are not disappointed the world (or your perception of it) changes for the better.
