This level of subjugation requires a cooperative loser

230

If in the 90s, you predicted Celtic would win 12 titles in 13 years by 2024, they would walk away from you.  Back then, I took Deapthroat’s advice and followed the money, I knew that David Murray’s leveraged success would ‘crash and burn’ [quote: my brother Kevin, every 20 minutes from 1992-1998], but never in my wildest’ did I expect the domination to be so utterly complete.  You would be forgiven for thinking this level of subjugation requires a cooperative loser.

It. Is. All. About. The Money.  You and I have to live within our means; under normal circumstances, it comes naturally, we don’t buy luxuries if we can’t pay the fuel bill.  For reasons that we could explore further, some men (it’s always men), think that advocating for the spend of imprudently large amounts of money on football players is a test of their [fragile]manhood.  Why can’t they just buy the blue pills instead of compensating through all this drama?

19 years ago, while Celtic were on their way to losing a league, I wrote that we were in the early years of a Generation of Domination, which started in 2000.  There was a bit of pushback from the hard of thinking, but it was so obvious – Celtic were living within their means, Rangers were driving off a cliff.  There was no other plausible future.

In 2024, you don’t need a crystal ball to know the future of Scottish football.  We all know how it is going to play out, including the Newco board and fans.  But they are all too scared to face up to the reality and do the hard penance – a decade-or-so rebuilding from the ground up, to give their son’s son’s a chance of success.

And for the really hard of thinking, this doesn’t mean we will win every league/cup/game and Celtic will not compensate for whatever you are missing, we will just become and remain the most successful football club in the world.  Which is alright, I suppose.

Enjoy these Celtic years!

Fittingly Celtic go head first into the new CL format,

    1. Teams go into the usual 4 pots, but we’re not drawn in groups this time.

    2. We will be drawn to play two teams from each pot. For each pot, we will play one team at home, and one away. So, we’ll play 8 games against 8 different teams.

    3. You can only play a maximum of 2 teams from one country.

    4. Teams go in one big league.

After 8 games, the top 8 teams get a bye for the knock-out round. The bottom 8 are oot.

The next 16 teams have a play-off to see who joins the knock-out teams.

A big change for the knockouts is that it’s no longer an open draw, and it’s going to have a tennis-like seeding system. For example, the teams who finish 1st and 2nd in the group stages will be in opposite halves of the draw and can’t meet until the final.

So, if we finish 20th in the league, we’ll play either the 13th or 14th team in the play-off (middle-bottom), then either the 3rd or 4th team in the knockout round.

There were many doubts during the season. A quick look back at comments during and after certain games will clarify that.

From my own perspective i did express some apprehension after certain games , especially about entertainment. However I never doubted Brendan, I have always stated that he is by far the best fit for the job.

Yes of course there were many doubts during the season, but like you I never doubted that Brendan was the best man for the job. I was gobsmacked when I first learned that he was returning – I never dreamed he’d come back after Ange’s great success and the well-broadcast verbal abuse he had suffered.

Seemed to me that for most of this season he has been operating with one hand tied behind his back due to injuries and other well known handicaps – but that team at Kilimarnock was a Brendan team, playing the Brendan way. When he has the raw material he alwaysdelivers – that’s always been our experience during his time with us.

Central defence in our two earlier defeats at Rugby Park this season – Lagerbielke & Nawrocki – Scales & Phillips…nuff said.

TIMBHOY163- all about opinions, some want the main stand rebuilt, too expensive IMO, to Almores Cafe……personally I am in the main stand, the kiosks and toilets need an overhaul, we should be putting pressure on Glasgow City Council, to have a mini village to the left hand side of the main stand as you walk up The Celtic Way,bars, food outlets,TVs to watch whatever game is on at that time, all indoors.Ive seen the one at Man City which was obviously part of the stadium planning, and it’s excellent, something on a smaller scale maybe, public transport is a joke around CP….it depends how much we want to spend

Reading a few of these posts about some auld yins giving up season tickets reminds me of the night of the Lazio game, walking up the steps to go down (eh?) in 416 after the game and there was an old boy in a bunnet sitting about 8/10 rows back, just sitting there. I gave him a wee slap on the shoulder on my way by, saying “you all right, auld yin!”

Ach son, he said, I miss my pals.

  17. *SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2023-24*

*RESULTS FROM GAME #48 KILMARNOCK 0 CELTIC 5 (IDAH, MAEDA, FORREST, O’RILEY(2))*

    Good evening, friends.

I know that after Saturday’s Derby win, we were 1/2500 to win the league but that still didn’t stop the pre-match nerves kicking in for this old man. Subconsciously, the fear of losing again against Kilmarnock and then knowing that we would still have to win our final game brought an extra edge to our midweek fixture. Fortunately, the nerves were blown away very quickly as we took a 2-goal lead within the opening 12 minutes. Adam Idah had already looked impressive before he opened the scoring in the 5th minute and when Maeda made it 2, we just knew that the title was ours. Fine link up from Idah and Maeda saw the ball laid on a plate for Forrest to make it 3 on the 35th minute. 3 very similar goals and the type of moves that wee Kyogo has been crying out for all season – hit the byline, cut it across on the deck, tap it in! Just a pity for him he was on the bench and denied a first half hat trick!

We continued our fine play throughout the 2nd half with the top form of Player Of The Year (in waiting) Matt O’Riley being rewarded with 2 fine goals. This puts him level with Kyogo as our top scorer for this season. I’ll add the goalscorers table at the bottom.

The scenes at the final whistle were joyous with every single player living (and loving) the moment and lapping up the adulation cascading down from the stand, despite the Killie DJ doing his best with several plays of Paper Roses.

A really memorable league season for all sorts of reasons, good and bad but ultimately a really hard won title has, for the 12th time in 13 years, gone the way of the good guys. We are in a very good place in our attempt to win The Double.

We have now played 48 competitive games. We have managed 36 wins, 7 draws and 8 defeats, scoring 111 goals and conceding 48. We are 6 points clear with 1 league game left and have become CHAMPIONS AGAIN for the 54th time, eclipsing Rangers’ (RIP) haul of 53½.

In terms of the 3 domestic trophies played for in Scotland the totals are now: R2ngers 3, Rangers(RIP) 113½, Celtic 116. With, of course, this season’s Scottish Cup still up for grabs.

My thanks to the 60 who voted this week. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

    Hart: 0

    Johnston: 4

    Carter-Vickers: 11

    Scales: 2

    Taylor: 0

    McGregor*: 16

    Hatate: 5

    O’Riley*: 55

    Forrest: 19

    Idah*: 54

    Maeda: 13

    Kuhn: 0

    Kyogo: 0

    Palma: 0

    Iwata: 0

    Bernardo: 0

For those that check these things, the 1 missing vote was suggested as going to Brendan Rodgers.

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Kilmarnock are –

    O’Riley – 5 points

    Idah – 4 points

    Forrest – 3 points

    McGregor – 2 points

    Maeda – 1 point

The overall positions after 48 games played are as follows –

    100 points – O’Riley

    86 points – Scales

    68 points – McGregor

    63 points – Carter-Vickers

    42 points – Hart and Johnston, A.

    39 points – Kyogo

    32 points – Maeda

    28 points – Palma

    25 points – Yang

    15 points – Hatate

    18 – Kyogo and O’Riley

    10 – Maeda

    9 – Palma

    8 – Idah

    7 – Forrest and Turnbull

    5 – Oh

    4 – Bernardo

3 – Hatate, Kuhn and Taylor

  19. Interesting lead, this millennium has certainly seen Celtic dominate Scottish football, hard work in the nineties by teal Celtic fholk made that solid foundation.

Of course from next season we get a chance to start making our mark where it really counts – in Europe.

The new format UCL gives elite Club’s outside the big leagues a real opportunity for ambition and growth.

Celtic FC are in a great position to take advantage of this, mid table mediocrity in the UCL is great place to be.

Thanks to all the twenty first Century contributors to that, including the financially prudent and quadruple treble architect.

Like the last twenty seasons have been a boon for mid table English Clubs in the EPL, Celtic have a real opportunity to get a real foot up in the footballing food chain.

Celtic aren’t only an elite Club, they are also a unique Club and our character can put us back on the stage where big Jock put us, a stage where we belong…

Looking forward to next season 🎶is enough to make your heart GO-OH-OH-OH!🎵

Was on the fence about signing Adam Idah before last night.

I now think we should pursue him. Still young and Brendan clearly thinks he can get even more from him.

One caveat – Any bid we make should reflect the TRUE value Norwich put on him.

Given they’ve sent Adam out on loan while Ashley Barnes is their first choice centre forward?

There is a date mistake re our first treble. It was in 1907 that we did this where the poster’s exemplar 15 year old would have been merely 34 years old and would have had a fighting chance of being alive to see that first treble. An average age of dying of 43 then would have meant that many did not live to be 34 though, even if they had survived to age 15.

Maley did 3 consecutive titles for the last time in 1917 and we did not achieve it again until 1968, a gap of 49 years as the poster stated.

I don’t see any disputation that Jock and Willie surpassed trebles and got 6iar and 9iar respectively but he was referring to being grateful for a three year period of league title wins and the vast number of Celts who never got to see such a thing because their lives could be nasty, brutish and short due to the grinding effects of poverty.

And though poverty has not gone away, a Scottish male average life expectancy is now over 76 years. Nevertheless we have been provided with a feast of domestic achievement denied to most previous generations. That is the main point.

Many of the original spectators , including Willie Maley lived to see our first treble- none to see our 2nd treble but we have 21st century children have seen us do 9iar preceded by an earlier treble and now, a subsequent treble.

We are blessed by domestic success and we are, I feel, not sufficiently appreciative of how rare this is.

  28. garygillespieshamstring on

I think Adam Idah is a striker of the type preferred by Brendan Rodgers.
