Thistle, EU ruling, Belfast cyclists

127

We put an inordinate amount of goals past Partick Thistle in the League Cup in October, but Thistle responded well to that reversal, losing only once (by a single goal to Aberdeen) since.  They are a better team than John Guidetti made them look.

As for Celtic, this is another opportunity to build on good recent performances.  The speed and accuracy we passed against both Salzburg (despite the result) and Hearts was perceivably better than in previous games, but there is still work to do.  Salzburg were better, Hearts imploded, but Thistle will defend deep and made life difficult.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the ticket competition yesterday, and who donated £1 or more to the Mary’s Meals school kitchen appeal.  Thanks also to Magners for making it possible.

Congratulations to the Youths who won 1-6 at Murray Park last night.  No doubt about it, that’s going to hurt.

Thanks to the reader who emailed a copy of the European Commission ruling from June 2002 on multiple ownership of football clubs.  Then owners of shares in (then) Rangers, ENIC, took Uefa to the EC Competition Commissioner, Mario Monti (whatever happened to him?), ruled that the Uefa prohibition on multiple ownership was legal and necessary to avoid clubs being “tempted to rig matches”, and to “ensure that sporting competitions are fair and honest”.

Anyone wanting to clip Mike Ashley’s wings could do worse than involve Uefa sooner.

Supposedly 2 of our 3 targets. Fans be back in droves with that news.

Id say our 3rd target armstrong will be our main signing.

Was at the game and saw no vandalism, the abuse and attempted thuggery from hearts fans

closet to the away end was tolerated for the whole match, even when they charged at the police and stewards continually, think this woman is just another orange bigot, just like Salmond,

What a bunch of fannies the Snp are burning the report into changes in the devolution settlement, that cow Sturgeon seemed to think that even if the no vote won they would just be handed enough power to make it almost independence,as only around 30% of the eligible voters voted yes, I doubt that there is much demand for any change, tge only change i would like is a change in the voting system to first past the post

SO PROUD TO HAVE VOTED NO , FECK THE SNP

  4. I honestly don’t see the problem with Anne Budge’s statement. There was balance in it and it was aimed primarily at promoting a more family-friendly atmosphere at Tynecastle.

In my opinion this wasn’t about finger pointing, however it does make for uncomfortable reading from our point of view.

  5. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

Tend to agree. Hearts fans as individuals can be OK. Get them together though and they are as rabid as the Huns.

Disappointed by the statement though. Fair play to Budge. She is going to be heralded as the saviour of Scottish football. I believe Hearts fans broke almost 100 seats at Easter Road earlier this season and caused damage to toilets etc. I hope Hibs are as happy to share this information as Budge was.

  6. the long wait is over on

Is it just me or does anyone else think p67 is hinting , not for the first time, that someone should be complaining to UEFA about Mike Ashley’s dual involvement.

Presumably the club won’t. Is it open to fans to complain?

    Spill the beans Paul.

Is that whit yer hintin’ at..?

I suggest we stop the mibbery and whataboutery.

As I see it, Ann Budges’ comments will be truthful. She appears to be genuine.

Unfortunately we have the louts in our support. The Buckfast yobs who thrive on misbehaviour.

Iv heard good reports so would be happy myself.. cant see how other 2 will improve squad thou.

We have henderson biton and mcgregor as 3 young bhoys coming through.

Id like to see armstrong along with a more experienced or proven player aswel instead of 2 more squad fillers.

  10. Any word from the 6th floor of we make the rules up as we go along CO Hampden park on the Charlie Telfer .

No doubting we have some fans who let us down at times as most clubs do, as has been pointed out its the biased reporting and twisting of Budges statement by the bbc ,though I was sadly expecting it.

  11. I’ve no problem with Anne’s statement. If some Celtic fans vandalised seats and left graffiti, they should be ashamed of themselves. I won’t excuse their behaviour, but it is important to stress that this is common across the UK.

I don’t think sorting it out behind closed doors will fix the problem. Justafan’s approach sounds good:

    – agreed reporting programme supported by all clubs

    – all pictures, before and after, of vandalised areas should be published

    – clear reporting of number of supporters in an area, the number of stewards, number of police and cctv coverage etc.

It’s probably already the case, but I think it’s right that the offending team should pay the bill – I’d also argue that the vandal, if proven clearly guilty, should refund their club.

The game will be much better if we can stamp this out, but it’ll only happen if we do it publicly. And EVERY team gets the same fair representation.

We will probably face some embarrassing moments, but I think we would respond in a positive way.

  12. Has mrs budge released similar statements after other games this season?, or maybe there has been no offensive singing, or arrests. Hard to believe. Not making excuses for our dafties, but any trouble from our side seems to be highlighted and takes over the front pages for days.

Manna from heaven for the msm.

    Batten down the hatches! Incoming!

  13. Perhaps it’s time that Celtic were more vocal about the damage done to our stadium over the years. Then again….we often wait for them to say something and often we are disappointed.

can you post what she said about the previous weeks visitors .please.

    ========================

We have no influence over what the previous weeks visitors have done, we do have influence and responsibility over and to ourselves. We can play whataboutery or grow up and look at the message as a whole.

Part of that whole is family attendance. My son has commented he could not take his young daughter to a match because of the language at games. Now that is hard to eradicate as a bad pass brings out our worst feelings of annoyance, but he has a point.

Football should not be a series of wars of attrition for adult males only, it should be a family event , priced to attract families. I’m not surprised it has taken a woman to make this point, they tend to be the more peaceful of the two genders.

  15. Anne Budge said, about a week ago, that the clubs in Scotland should think of the bigger picture rather than look at themselves for the good of Scottish football. At the time a I thought it was a veil comment ,of the need to increase the number of teams in the SFPL,if that is what it is called nowadays. In other words Hibernian ,Sevco and themselves would be manipulated into the top league.

This statement today by her,is to say Celtic are getting too big for their boots.Scottish football must put the boot into Celtic at every opportunity. The game is on.

This is in no way condones idiot behaviour.

From now on Celtic should publish all incidents and damage caused by away supporters.

  16. Craigellachie10 on

Why do people think that going to a football match gives them licence to vandalise others property. They wouldn’t do it at a rock concert for example.

And let’s leave any wharaboutery to others. If there is damage we condemn, pay up and take the money out of the football budget. These ‘fans’ are then damaging their clubs footballing prospects.

    ======================

Agreed. I thought justafan was spot on. I compare it to making drinking and driving socially unacceptable and that was done over a period of time by highlighting the behaviour and its consequences.

Forget the media using it to have a go at Celtic, they would rather football stayed in the dark ages.

It is not behaviour peculiar to Celtic supporters and Budge had a go at Hearts fans in her statement too. It is a football and society problem and should be tackled as such by making it as unthinkable as drink driving has become for the vast majority of driving citizens.

Pardon? Where does she say that? I cannot see it.

  20. I was at Tynecastle and didn’t see a single seat broken or act of vandalism. Doesn’t mean there were none, but not as widespread as that article makes it sound.

Also, the statament that “children were terrified/had to be removed part way through the game/were traumatised” is frankly ridiculous. What were they traumatisd by during the game? Singing? Shouting? From a different part of the ground? I could see one young boy in the home section closest to us happily wandering up and down the stairs on his own during the game with no apparent parental supervision. He certainly didn’t look traumatised.

  21. overseasbhoy (not Mexico)

Half the home fans would have been whistling along and swaying from side to side with the away fans bile instead of writing complaints to ann budge last week

Having been to few a conventions over there my understanding of NATIMS is a reference to our friends in the former colonies

*correct NATIMS is an acronym for North American Tims and that includes Canada and Mexico………Incidentally if my memory serves me well the NAFCSC was formed by 2 former Chateau Lait residents who now live in the Great White North.

  23. Dear Ann,

Thank you for creating this talking point. CQN has been so quiet in the last few days due to the absence of a fresh controversy. It has certainly tided us over until tomorrow when we will be talking about Celtic trouncing Thistle in the Glasgow derby.

  26. I wouldn’t pay anywhere near £2 million, for any opposition player in Scottish football.

  27. If our support is that bad,Bhoycott all away games.Let these clubs sink in their own mire..

  28. This sanitisation of football…. how far are we going to take it?

How far do you want to take it? How much power do you want to add to FoCUS post OBB? Football banning orders for swearing, that’s the answer is it?

No swearing at football? How would we enforce that, can’t even be done on here….

There are the offended, the easily offended and the want to be offended and that leaves the vast majority who want to watch good football in an authentic football atmosphere.

Or are we to introduce pantomine clap cards as cue and piped cheering and stadia bleepers when song is sung about can you hear the ******* sing, whilst we all sit numbed passionless numpties grinning like numbed passionless numpties just in case the tele camera pans onto us?
