Those moving on in the summer

1021

I’ve always cautioned against judging a player who has been out for an extended period but being hooked at halftime last night looks like an ominous sign for Derk Boerrigter, who sparkled for 30 minutes on his debut against Ross County earlier in the season but has come nowhere close to that form since.

Injuries stopped him in his tracks that day against County, and several times since, but whatever the reason, we’ve not seen anything like what the player is capable of, and at 27, he is likely to be looking for first team action elsewhere next season.

After last night’s game Neil Lennon spoke of the possibility of signing and losing players over the summer transfer window, which starts in three weeks.  Buying well is crucial, and Celtic didn’t do that last summer, but getting those ‘no longer in the manager’s plans’ off the books as early as possible is also important.

Last August we offloaded Lassad, probably by parting with a bundle of cash in the process.  This is not a precedent Celtic will have been keen to set, but it’s better to have the decks cleared than have an unproductive player linger around for a year.

Anyone starting less than a third of the games he is available for selection should be looking for pastures new, especially with new arrivals expected this summer.

Our best right back since Danny McGrain, why on earth would you want him to leave?

  2. Id be shocked if we have big FF between the sticks next season, if he makes the plane to brazil Lawell will be on the phone to get the sell.. There will be half a dozen english teams interested.

Big virgil i hope will stick around and due to our champions league performances this season it might put big teams off and any major bids.. Just hope he isnt happy to settle for someone like palace, sunderland ,newcastle , villa who could all be doing with the big man.

Taxi for – derk, amido, kayal ,mcgeouch and steven moyochenko

Return taxi (loan) for – denny johnstone, george, atajic,

  3. I would hazard a guess that none of the players currently out on loan will return and be in the first team squad next season. They will be sold, if there are any takers, or sent out on loan again.

  6. For me a back up left back for Izzy should be high up on NFLs shopping list. Young Robertson at DU has perfomed consistenly well this season and would benefit under Danny McG.

I would also like to see Stuart Armstrong a forward thinking midfielder in the hoops another who has had a very good season.

Both of these guys are at the right age to make the step up.

The summer transfer window will be interesting and I hope Lennon is around to see it and several more summer transfer windows through, but it is extremely frustrating when the league is comfortably in the bag to see first team bench warmers that we know are not good enough get a chance ahead of some promising youngsters. We know what Kayal can do and I think most would get rid. Boerrigter is a waste of time and it was futile to give him a final chance last night- its just not happening. Pick a youngsters name out a hat and lets see what he’s got, fitness and hunger will be guaranteed to be two of the advantages he has over Derck.

Pukki will be a useful squad man and I was actually glad to see Balde given a chance as at least he is young and has shown glimpses of ability, but I wonder if Crystal Palace still want him?!

Anyone silly enough to read my posts a couple of days ago will know I think Pukki is a very clever footballer with a lot of potential.

I thought he was our best player last night by some distance. I hope to see a lot more of him next season in a Celtic shirt.

This fulla can be a start for us.

  11. Catman

Robertson would be better staying at DU for another season or two, as would Gauld. Only their first full season in top division football.

Armstrong is ready for a move, been in the DU team for 4 seasons and improving in every one of them. Should be a definite signing.

  12. mullet and co 2 on

Amido Balde seems not to get it personally because he tries hard but he is quite patently not Celtic class. A total waste of money. Money that, if the fee was true, would have been better spent on Johnny Russell.

Who was responsible for signing him? Presumably the lassie Costa had something to do with it. She would be better sticking to opening more coffee shops if that’s the case.

Presumably we will sign yet another expensive foreign experiment this season before Stevie May or even bringing Tony Watt back. Are Tony’s attitude problems any worse than the issues that Stokes or Griffiths bring?

Letting Samaras go to save a couple of hundred thousand is a big big mistake unless there is someone better coming in to replace him.

Big FF did the business the year before so that would be enough alon with england call up for move to the rich and powerful.

Virgil will miss out on holland squad and only has 1 year champions league experiance .. Where we did poorly.

These are reasons i think we have more chance of keeping the dutchman. I hope we keep both.

I think we should have enough funds in kitty for lenny to get 6m.. Plus selling kayal, derk, balde and releasing sammi plus another 1 or 2 should see lennon with a budget 8-10m . Cant see it happening thou.

  15. …”we’ve not seen anything like what the player is capable of”…

    ___________________________________________________

We’ve not seen enough of him to know what he’s capable of.

He seems to have spent most of his career at Ajax on the treatment table and has remarkably repeated the trick at Celtic.

But I’m sure it’s all coincidental.

  16. Just posted in the St Johnstone match thread my thoughts about the players. Will paste it below again.

IMHO I would like to see NL work harder on the squad rotation aspect of his managerial skillset to give Bhoys like Pukki in particular more of a chance…. and again.. drop Kayal the Headless Chicken PLEASE :)

    ——————————————————————

    ——————————————————————

Hi Bhoys and Ghirls! Haven’t posted here for years.. being a lurker. Feel to share my thoughts today on the fringe players who played yesterday.

Beram kayal is absolutely useless. Never recovered since McCulloch took him out.. Like something died in him.. his bravery. Defensive weakness and being a step behind led to first goal and a penalty conceded.. attacking he is too greedy.. shoots or try to create space for himself to shoot when he should pass (and has a truly terrible shot.. less than 1/10 on target at my count)…. get shot of him.. I have no clue why he played 90 mins while proven Matthews was taken off at 45 mins.

Big Amido still has potential.. but there is absolutely no point humping long balls up to a target man if he is gonna just hand the ball to the opposition with his first touch or even after he has controlled it. That aspect of his game was dire. Still I think he can become something. I suspect that being from Africa he hasn’t played/trained as long as some of the other young men. I would like to see him one more year.

Boerrigter is quick.. direct.. but sucks with his head and is weak.. afraid of physical contact it seems.. not for us or Scottish fitba. Also seems lazy off the ball.

Pukki is my fave.. a really strong little man with great balance, sharp mind, creativity, great passing, shooting.. a wee terrier and warrior he is.. would love to see more from him.

Zaluska solid as usual, didn’t do much wrong and was not at fault for our goals conceded. Technically sound.

Actually I predicted an NL tactical disaster yesterday, but he seems to be learning from past mistakes of playing many fringe players at one time. At least this time he used the quality on the bench. The introduction of Commons and Brown for the 2nd half was a great move although I would rather have seen Kayal off instead of Matthews (unless Matthews was struggling physically? injury?) So imo NL seems to be maturing and learning from his past erors.. Can’t ask for more than that!

Have to say. St Johnstone’s 3rd goal was an absolute peach and they deserve al credit. O’Halloran starting great from the throwin, creating space for Hasselbaink by cutting inside before splaying it back out for him to reach the line where he holds it up wonderfully, cuts it back to Wotherspoon who fires in a wonderful cross to the waiting O’Halloran to finish with his head. Great team goal an absolute joy to watch.

  17. Tony Watt will definitely not be sold in the summer.

Rather, he will be told to find himself another club which, in football parlance, is the sack.

I am hoping that if big Fraser gets named in the England squad then he will stay on at Celtic. If he does we will have a settled back five, a fair collection of midfielders, though one which Snodgrass would definitely improve, and a group of forwards half of whom are basically trialists one season on. Last night Norwich got relegated so Gary Hooper’s strategy, instead of giving him a chance of playing in Brazil, will give him the opportunity of plying his trade, once again, in the Championship. It’s a great league, and he will do well, but he will never get a call up from there. I would settle for two or three players, one central defender, Snodgrass plus one goalscorer to add to Griffiths and Stokes. I think (or is it double-think) that talk of Hoops coming back is a lot of flannel, boardroom-speak for the deluded masses. I could be wrong there, I’ve been deluded before.

  21. Pukki is one to keep, a lot of people slagging him off, he’ll never score 20/30 goals a season but thats not his role, he does most of his work of the ball creating the spaces for others!

Balde is an option only use din desperate situations, get the ball up to him to hold on to it or knock it down for someone like stokes/Griffiths. However he cost far too much.

Derk id agree is useless, shame really as was excited to get a direct winger who gets at the opposition!

Not sure on who we’ll sign, but Snodgrass seems a good option and a Hooper return? but then why have Tony Watt back and have Holmbert! Will stunt their growth in my opinion.

    Kayal the same.

Tony watt should be given a real chance in the team not bit part, hes always lively and works very hard for the ball. he’d score plenty of goals.

Anybody saying get rid of Lustig should simply be ignored!

I would like Celtic to keep both as well. I don’t see us selling the two of them. Fraser will make the World Cup squad, but is unlikely to play. Should bump the price up a bit more though if some English teams come in for him.

Hopefully we can get rid of the deadwood. Not always easy though if players refuse to leave. I’ll be sorry to see Sammi go. I hope he gets a good deal elsewhere.

I think Celtic were stung big time if they paid the reported 3 mill for Boerrigter. They will problems moving this guy on imo!!

  25. McDowellcelt god bless wee oscar on

Lustig, Van Dijk and big Fraser are the 3 players who will be attracting the big bids this summer! If we can keep these 3 we are laughing although i think we will be lucky to keep 1 of them.

With Lustigs contract talks ongoing any serious bid we get for him will be accepted as we have matthews and fisher at right back. Hopefully we keep Lustig as he is top notch and doesnt look out of place at the top level in champions league.

As for the other two i think Forster is a certainty to leave in August after world cup. He has given us good service and club wont stand in his way when EPL clubs come calling. Any bids over 12 million for virgil will be accepted aswel. He has strolled through SPL all year. Lenny is hopefully picking his brain telling him to give us 1 more year then he can move on to a better league.

*careful there LB, in an effort to make the WC squad Hoops left, any other season and he may have stayed. As for Misser, he just didn’t suit our style of play i.e. parking the bus and huge punts up the park where he could utilise his speed. He didnae want to leave and his first goal against us on his return to CP he gave a GIRUY to Peter Lawell.

  28. pabloh_AKA_NEIL LENNON on

I must admit, I’m a big Lustig fan. The thing is, we have two quality right backs in lustig & Matthews. The problem is that more often than not, both of them are injured.

Like most on here I’m yet to be convinced there is a player in any of – Pukki, Baldi, Boerrigter or Watt.

I’m a bit frustrated we seem to be wasting money on these type of 2m pound unproven attackers. Throw the likes of Bangura and Rasmussen into that list. Who scouts these players? Fair play to our scouting system for defenders and midfielders, but why the problem up front.

I’ve been saying for years…why not spend 4 or 5 million on a proven quality striker. We are spending double that trying to unearth a gem.
