Those moving on in the summer

1021

I’ve always cautioned against judging a player who has been out for an extended period but being hooked at halftime last night looks like an ominous sign for Derk Boerrigter, who sparkled for 30 minutes on his debut against Ross County earlier in the season but has come nowhere close to that form since.

Injuries stopped him in his tracks that day against County, and several times since, but whatever the reason, we’ve not seen anything like what the player is capable of, and at 27, he is likely to be looking for first team action elsewhere next season.

After last night’s game Neil Lennon spoke of the possibility of signing and losing players over the summer transfer window, which starts in three weeks.  Buying well is crucial, and Celtic didn’t do that last summer, but getting those ‘no longer in the manager’s plans’ off the books as early as possible is also important.

Last August we offloaded Lassad, probably by parting with a bundle of cash in the process.  This is not a precedent Celtic will have been keen to set, but it’s better to have the decks cleared than have an unproductive player linger around for a year.

Anyone starting less than a third of the games he is available for selection should be looking for pastures new, especially with new arrivals expected this summer.

  2. THM, great wee night watching The Celtic with yourself, Tooting Tim and the Lhads in the Wimbledon CSC. and will definitely be in touch when I’m down next, Neil had a grand night and is now an honourary Tim, still has no idea about football, but he does have a better understanding about why I go on so much about Celtic and CQN.

He thought it was amazing I would meet up with people I had never met, he was worried it might be dangerous;-)

Like I say, he knows better now.

  3. Afternoon, interesting chat on ins and outs we would like to see before we start our quest of 4 in a row , Euro glory and maybe a cup final next year (Please Neil).

Over the last few years we have made some good punts and some not very good punts on overseas players spending a few quid in the process. I think its time we started trusting the bhoys coming through at Lennoxtown, otherwise what’s the point or are we only developing players who are only good enough for the rest of Scottish football.

We have the following young players most of who have come through Lennoxtown who I would rather see filing the bench and covering for injury and suspension rather than sign another batch of overseas projects. If we are going to spend money then they must be a straight into the first team signing.

So let’s give some of these guys a chance:

We just tend to accept the gossip that suits our own agenda.

    So true.

Which might explain your tacit acceptance 24 hours ago of the post on CQN claiming that someone who was a guest in the directors box heard every one of the Celtic board express their desire for Rangers to be back in the top flight.

I must admit, I’m a big Lustig fan. The thing is, we have two quality right backs in lustig & Matthews. The problem is that more often than not, both of them are injured.

Like most on here I’m yet to be convinced there is a player in any of – Pukki, Baldi, Boerrigter or Watt.

I’m a bit frustrated we seem to be wasting money on these type of 2m pound unproven attackers. Throw the likes of Bangura and Rasmussen into that list. Who scouts these players? Fair play to our scouting system for defenders and midfielders, but why the problem up front.

I’ve been saying for years…why not spend 4 or 5 million on a proven quality striker. We are spending double that trying to unearth a gem.

    Hail hail

    ————————————————————

Any thoughts on who at £4-5M we could look at? I’m thinking that there are many clubs that can afford that and can pay better wages than us. I’m not sure that spending that extra £2M would provide a significantly better player?

Many thanks for the birthday wishes for TT junior. It’s actually tomorrow but, for various reasons, we are celebrating tonight.

On players moving on, IMO Boerrigter is lazy and should go. Pukki has class and needs more time to come to terms with the lack of space and time in the final third against SPFL teams. I like Balde’s attitude but not convinced he will make it.

Efe is an athlete rather than a football player. A good squad player rather than a must-start.

Looking forward to trophy Sunday. Lunch over, back to work.

  7. There will be no offers for Lustig as he hasn’t proved himself on return from surgery.

I also doubt there will be serious offers for VVD and FF.

Bottom line… Nae body important to us will be going anywhere.

  8. Just like to clear up the aul full-back debate…

Tom Boyd is the best full-back since Danny McGrain

Telfer was the best full-back since Tom Boyd

Lustig is now the best full-back since Tom Boyd

I would hazard a guess that none of the players currently out on loan will return and be in the first team squad next season. They will be sold, if there are any takers, or sent out on loan again.

*fully concur with you there Kayal, a couple of the lads we have sent out can play CB/LB and due to the WC that’s areas we will need for the qualifying rounds, so doesn’t give much hope for those on loan. Biggest disappointment for me is young Dylan and not TW, we paid good money for him to the deid team.

No. It’s more because I doubt The Great Desmondo would have anyone on the Board who disagreed with him on such a central issue.

“Rangers is a great football club, it has a great history and it’s unfortunate that they have been relegated,” said the Irish businessman.

“We would certainly like to contest with them every week – we believe we’ve got a better team and a better management structure.

“Rangers is a fantastic football club, it is one of the greatest football clubs in Great Britain, we’ve got to acknowledge that.”

Ive have to strongly disagree with you on Efe not being a footballer . He is extra skillfull on the ball , a great passer and a good reader of the game. I will agree that his concentration can be suspect on occasion. But even that aspect of his game has improved greatly. He is now one of the most important players in the team and he is heading to Brazil to play in the World cup.

I would say both go hand in hand, watts attitude to training seemed to be the problem.

Stokes and griffiths problems seem to be they act like they would if they werent pro footballers.

Stokes likes his rebel songs.. Must be the first celtic player to do so.. Surprisingly.

We take a punt on every player we sign. That’s our place in the world.

….and of course we do. Some posters are saying we shouldn’t take risks when signing players. We do. And we should, though we would all want better results than those we got last summer.

Second, some suggest that bigbadpeterlawell will sell players against Neil’s wishes. He will. And he should.

There is not much doubt that FF is as good a goalie as we have seen in a long time. However, once a player f his value gets to having 2 years left in his contract – and tells us he isn’t signing another one, then that sale has to happen at a time and price that best suits Celtic.

  20. Lustic is not only a great full-back but he can also plat at centre-half . The other thing Ive noticed is that he is the only organiser and a shouter in the defense . Something completly lacking with Virgil ,Ambrose and Izzy and some extent Forster who are the quietest defenders Ive ever seen .Maybe they do telepathy.

  21. One player I am looking forward to coming back is Callum McGregor.

Leading ‘scorer, from midfield, with 13 goals for a struggling League One side.

Will he be given à chance ‘tho?

    I have my doubts.

there are not a lot of teams looking to sign players who cant get a game or make an impact in a second rate league

we might be saddled with these guys or at best send them away on loan

I believe we do take this into consideration. It’s a risk that sometimes works out – John Hartson being an obvious example. However, your point still has merit. The greater risk would be reflected in the structure of the deal – if we are playing our cards wisely. A few have mentioned Derk Boerigter in this regard. I can’t imagine Celtic paying cash upfront for a player with an injury record such as he had when we signed him. As ernie pointed out earlier, we are working with incomplete information (at best) and we tend to select the information that suits our view.
