I’ve always cautioned against judging a player who has been out for an extended period but being hooked at halftime last night looks like an ominous sign for Derk Boerrigter, who sparkled for 30 minutes on his debut against Ross County earlier in the season but has come nowhere close to that form since.
Injuries stopped him in his tracks that day against County, and several times since, but whatever the reason, we’ve not seen anything like what the player is capable of, and at 27, he is likely to be looking for first team action elsewhere next season.
After last night’s game Neil Lennon spoke of the possibility of signing and losing players over the summer transfer window, which starts in three weeks. Buying well is crucial, and Celtic didn’t do that last summer, but getting those ‘no longer in the manager’s plans’ off the books as early as possible is also important.
Last August we offloaded Lassad, probably by parting with a bundle of cash in the process. This is not a precedent Celtic will have been keen to set, but it’s better to have the decks cleared than have an unproductive player linger around for a year.
Anyone starting less than a third of the games he is available for selection should be looking for pastures new, especially with new arrivals expected this summer.

NL has to be decisive and ruthless on who is leaving.Having guys sit around on very good money ,but not making a contribution is a total waste of resources. Also guys deemed as “mistakes” have to go.More quality, less quantity.
When everyone last season was touting that we buy any one of 6 Dundee United players, I expressed the view that Armstrong looked the best of the bunch but I worried whether he could add flair to his game, otherwise he would not displace Brown or Ledley from our midfield. Well, this year, he has kicked on yet again. Whenever I see United, he puts in a shift and is making telling runs and passes now to add to his proven athleticism. I do not see many players elsewhere who are at the level of even our youngsters, far less our first team but Armstrong has convinced me.
I see Mackay-Stevens as a talented inconsistent lightweight, Stevie May as a Tommy Coyne/ Gerry Creaney level player i.e. he won’t improve us and the best that Aberdeen have just now (aside from Barry Robson) is Peter Pawlett and he won’t get away with his diving with us. Andrew Robertson may be good cover but Izzy still has secure possession of the LB jersey, but we have no imminent LB successes in our Development squad so we do need cover.
If we can persuade someone to take Boerigter, even on loan, we could free up for Armstrong, Snodgrass and Robertson. With Samaras and, possibly, Kayal plus 3 or 4 of the development squad loanees departing we should have room for both Snodgrass and Armstrong. It’s a squad game nowadays.
Tommy Doc once said of a injury prone player. ” He wd get injured on Q o S”

67heaven- Seemingly Samaras was offered less than he is on just now.HH

Not that I want this to sound like a police B-movie, but….what’s your source?

I think we should only sign fit players.

Unfortunately both Mcgeouch and Atajic were quickly reduced to the status of subs for Coventry and Shrewsbury. Fleck is a more frequent selection than Dylan and Atajic did nothing with a desperate team.
Paul George has not broken into the Accies team but has been injured and unavailable for much of his spell. Young Findlay has had games for Morton, unfortunately though, they were shipping 10 while he played. Young Chalmers seems to have been picked as a CB with Falkirk rather than LB. I cannot see anyone other than Calum McGregor (and, in the early part of his loan, Tony Watt) having grabbed their loan chance with both hands. Calum deserves a chance back here but further loans might test him even further.

I think Efe is a potential replacement for Victor in the holding role. If we could get a CB to play with VVD then Efe can step up into the midfield and be used as cover like Wanyama was at CB. Scott Brown showed again last night his best position his RM and we should keep him there.

Oh the irony…
The follow followers are up in arms about the redevelopment at Celtic Park. Especially the Celtic crest. ” it’s not fair using Protestant tax payers money for a Celtic crest”.
They are urging their fellow followers to write to their MP and demand an explanation.
Taxpayers money eh! Ain’t it comforting that they are so concerned about tax….and no even a riddy:-)
Tiny Tim @ 13;59,
I remember that.
While it is correct to say that signing a Footballer always has risk attached. Those risks can be minimized.
Many players, like this season, had failed to cut it at Celtic Park. We were loosing established first team players including two of our best performers, Wanyama and Hooper.
We were going into the qualifiers way short.
In that situation from my perspective you should take minimum risk when signing players.
Due to injury, fitness or form, none of those players except VVW helped our Champion League Campaign.

Kinda early for the drink D….. -:)
I have to laugh. Every year the same thing happens.
“we need to get rid of the deadwood” becomes the cry.
Well it strikes me we keep adding to it every year! And why? Because thats our strategy. Buy in cheap and pray that one or two make it.

Au contraire (that’s French) the children are encouraged to demonstrate independent thinking, just not in the sense that you mean.
You should try it some time :-)

I remember you getting slated for questioning the fitness record of Boeriggter and Mouyokolo because I was abused at the same time and it was even suggested that I was a Hun
Correct ….atrocious waste of resources
Good job getting £5m for Hooper in the last year of his contract ….dreadful job wasting that and more in Boeriggter, Mouyokolo , Balde and Pukki
Agree with SFTB re Armstrong. Best prospect in the SPFL. Bring him in.
Disagree with Livibhoy on Efe. The fella’s never a midfielder.
‘SallaboutopinionsCSC
Efe’s scary moments have grown more frequent as the season has gone on which is a worry; maybe he just needs a wee break.

A policy that probably allows us to break even in the transfer market overall.
Let’s say we did spend £6M on a striker, at that price he’s probably at a level that’s attracted some interest from the so called big leagues. In that scenario, I think he’d have to play exceptionally well in the league and Europe to provide any more than break even in resale value. And a huge loss if he sees out a contract.
The business thinking behind the current policy is sound. Football wise it’s not perfect by any stretch but we are starting to see some great players in the team and half decent football to go with them.
Long term it might prove to be great, it’s a bit of a balancing act just now while we don’t necessarily have great cover in all positions.
Efe in midfield ….not sure I could watch 90 mins of that
Armstrong from DU…excellent player … Genuine left sided midfielder … Yes from me
Oh and I’d take the young LB too
McGinn fae St Mirren would be a good signing IMO,looks an improving type.
For me the ideal summer window would be:
Keep our big players.
Taxi for Mouyokolo, Kayal, Balde, Pukki, Boeriggter and all of those out on loan.
Sammi to leave
Sign Snodgrass, Armstrong, centre half to partner VVD, striker of higher quality than we have, back up left back
The player trading strategy is still good. We’ve pretty much nailed the ‘finding gems’ part but supplementing this with experience is where the implementation of the strategy has come to a crashing halt. Thinking players like Jarosik, Gravesen, Boerrigter…. am sure there are others too painful and expensive to recall. Buying from big leagues needs a tweak!
Weeminger
No more of a loss than we’ve suffered from the purchase of Murphy, Balde , Boeriggter and Pukki …not to mention the cash wasted on Miku,Lassad and Brozek
Kayal
Fair enough
Would take Watt and McGregor back
Otherwise I’m with you
I don’t think Mouyokolo was a bad decision. The fellow had a good football pedigree before a horrendous injury from which he had recovered.
We’d watched him during 2 trials, given him an extensive medical, and he was available for zip.
It was worth the punt.
The fact that he then gets an acute achilles rupture was unforeseeable and entirely unrelated to his cruciate injury.
You can claim that this proves him to be ‘injury prone’ or whatever, but the risk with Steven was his knee being unable to sustain the dynamics of high level professional football, as with John Kennedy and others previously.
Depending on his current condition and wages, I might be inclined to give him another 12 month deal.
He’ll likely trip over the beer cellar hatch if we do mind. But that’s luck.
That’s the punt.
One or two additions and we’re set.
Clear out him, him, him, him, him etc and buy him, him, him, him, him, him, him.
What a difference a day makes in the world of a fickle football fan.
Does Armstrong from Dundee United not want to stay there as they are letting him complete his degree?
I would like to see us sign the lad though. Looks a cracking player. Would take Gauld too and loan him back for a season.
Give United Balde on loan IF they want him. That Bhoy needs games. He was so off the pace of the game last night it was unreal. He needs games to get to grips with the Scottish game. It probably explains why he has scored a few when coming off the bench. He can make an impact with his power and strength when other players are tired.

It’s funny how we never get anybody on here who admits to bowing down to Regi Blinker when he went over to take a corner .
Come on you know you want to get it off your chest.
Didn’t see anything of last night’s game at all – but glad to see Pukki scoring and playing well. I think he might prove to be a useful squad player yet.

I have a friend who specialises in sport injuries. He’s very much of the belief that other injuries often occur indirectly because of initial injuries.
By this he means that frequently if a sportsperson has suffered a serious injury then there is an understandable tendency to over compensate for fear of a reccurance and consequently this puts pressure on other areas of the body, resulting in further, buy unconnected injuries.
I tend to subscribe to this view and thus we should have left SM to trip over the beer cellar hatch elsewhere.
‘Our record breaking run without conceding a goal happened whilst Lustig was out injured.”
Naebdy question this?
Dundee United are not a good football team.
I am sorry to say that, but it’s the truth.

It’s a well observed phenomenon, but I can see nothing in the clinical research papers (just searched quickly) linking the two injuries SM has suffered.
