Three again outshines four at the back

303

Celtic were at their scintillating best as they hit St Johnstone with a treble of goals in the opening 26 minutes; the home team were fortunate the score was as low as three when Leigh Griffiths volleyed Greg Taylor’s cross into the net.

The link-play between Odsonne Edouard and Griffiths, as well as the crossing from Taylor and James Forrest set the tone.  The silky pitch encouraged Callum McGregor and Olivier Ntcham to display their range of passing, but for me, the formation is the most consistent predictor of Celtic’s performance.  When we play three at the back we play better than when we have a back four.

On Saturday we play on the bumpiest acre of Lanarkshire, so Neil has my sympathies in having to decide how to approach that game, but I would make last night’s formation the default from now on.

  1. Unlucky with my 4-0 bet last night.Had a wee look at the Huns site to see what their performance was like last night.”Pathetic performance, pathetic weather, pathetic atmosphere”.

“Pulled my hood up and did not watch last 20 mins.Just wanted this rubbish to end”

Maybe a wee punt on Don’s taking a draw on Saturday.

  2. 3 at the back is working great. But we need a working formation for when it isn’t or for when it is exposing our backline. Or a variation on th three

The real key for me is having enough bodies in midfield to win and keep the ball. The rest follows

  3. Lenny impressed with Jozo. His performances, and willingness to play ,when he should not have.He will be going nowhere. And IMHO,rightly so.

Funny how MJ,has not been branded “Injury prone”yet.

  4. 3 did outshine 4 last night, but the conditions did also deterioate. The personnel changed as did the shape. I also think that when playing 2 strikers we need to score the first goal. I think that 2 strikers should be used at celtic park as the 60000 fans and better conditions give us an advantage,

  5. A lot of criticism is the fact we are not trying to strengthen squad.. never mind team.. We have persistently injured players who we need to replace/cover NOW!. Left wing 2 winger who have been injured more that fit this season.. Same at CH Jozo/Bitton.. and also RB El HAtem and Frimpong now injured with no time given for his return this season. NL always says hewill miss next week or so. Said it 10 weeks ago for El Hatem (our best buy of the year)

  6. Huns are signing Georgi Hagi’s son.

Failed at Fiorentina and failed at Genk.

Did show promise at u21 level.

  7. Even a couple of loans of experienced players who can go straight into the team.. better than nothing.. However we should be buying for next season

Why do you think the squad is so bad? 15 wins out of 16 domestic games. 10 domestic trophies won in a row. Top of the league. Won the Europa League group with 2 games to spare.

    2 signings so far.

I keep saying this, but if somebody believes the likes of Simunovic, Elhamed, Bitton, Johnston etc. are not capable of covering for our first choice player then they should advocate to get rid of them.

Our squad is absolutely huge. How many wingers do you need?

  9. Some of the criticism on here last night after the game was hysterical. The formation suits the players better, and look as if they enjoy it,2 up front is a must for me in domestic football, Ntcham and McGregor move the ball quicker, with more forward passes available. Stick with Taylor at LB now,he was outstanding last night.

  10. Based on his appearances last season, I was really looking forward to MJ being a star for us this season but, apart from fleeting glimpses, it’s not happening. You get the feeling when he comes on, he is desperate to impress, perhaps he’s trying to hard.

Despite Neil telling him to FO last night, he obviously rates the lad highly or he wouldn’t have given him the new bumper contract. Can’t see him being allowed to go out on loan but a few weeks away from the spotlight and in the gym would do him the world of good. Needs to remember it’s a team game – look how unselfish Patryk was on when he came on for 10 mins. A blistering run into the box and although a shot looked on, he cut it back looking for a player in a better position.

  11. I keep saying this, but if somebody believes the likes of Simunovic, Elhamed, Bitton, Johnston etc.

…. I am more capable as they are INJURED!!!!!!!!!

Wonder if the long queue around the block in May will be for renewals or cancellations. Sincerely hope the former.

  14. Injuries are part of football, we have several players who have been effected worse than others. Hopefully they will all return soon and will all be ready to play in the hoops. That said I would like another centreback in if going with the 3 centrebacks.

I would prefer we always played a system that allowed us to have a bank of 3 in the middle of the park. Any one of 352, 433 or 4312 ensures we get as much firepower and legpower on to the field at any one time as we can.

A Romanian colleague says hes the average reflection of Romanian football today. Overhyped by his dad and pals. Scottish football will be too physical for him also.

    We’ll see.

    Yeah.

The guys never done it outside of Romania or Under 21s football. Failed in Italy & Belgium.

But he is still only 21 and has shown flashes of real talent. If it really is just a 6 month loan then it will be a lot of pressure on the young lad.

He might be up to it though.

He won’t be a world beater but he was purchased for quite big money in the summer and is probably a step up on Stewart, Murphy, Barker, Jones etc.

  21. Huns have an option to buy on Hagi

Pretty good deal then. Give him a look over for 6 months and then see if they want him full-time.

  22. I agree the back 3 deserves a run Paul. Problem is, we don’t have enough central defenders who are consistently fit to be able to deploy it on a regular basis. Going into the game on Sunday we have 2 fit senior central defenders. I would also argue that even if fit, Jozo isn’t mobile enough to get away against playing in a back 3 against better opposition. I find it difficult to understand that the transfer window is closing and we haven’t addressed this.

That finish by leighbhoy was world class.

    Ye can’t teach that.

The guy is 30 goals a season.

I’m glad the club supported him, but that’s who we are, expected nothing less.

Whether we win the league or not, I would imagine that nearly all Celtic fans will renew, providing they can afford it.

That is what supporters do. 😁

  26. Hagi signed by Genk for £4m,couldn’t make it…….The Scotsman has him at £8m already, they just can’t help themselves….

  27. We need a new CH for 3 at the back.

Jozo cannot be relied upon, Bitton is a converted CH and El Hamed a converted RB. Both injured.

If Ajer doesn’t make it for Sunday we are playing Scott Brown there again?

  28. Seems we are all doomed then with the arrival of the new Weah….
