Throw your tat in the sea! Cost of that penalty miss

284

I couldn’t watch.  Instead, I caught up on Ozark.  Later, convinced things were not working out as expected, I called it a night and was brushing my teeth when the first text arrived, “Beautiful”.  Did it mean what I hoped it did?

All the downstairs lights were out but within seconds there was a loud and determined hammering on the front door.  I knew what news that house-shaking noise heralded, someone was here to share a moment.  And what a moment.  What was at stake last night was nothing short of bragging rights for the rest of your life.  The. Rest. Of. Your. Life!

An avalanche of red, white and blue tat was a mouse click away from being launched last night.  An ocean of novelty items, neckties, mugs, watches and so many clothing lines, forever claiming the year 2022, were about to flood online shopping baskets and would forever catch your eye on the streets of Glasgow and towns thousands of miles away.

Throw them all in the sea!  Nobody wants them.

An entire industry was stopped in its tracks when Eintracht Frankfurt completed that most German of achievements and won the penalty shootout in Seville.  Had Newco won, their players would be celebrated for the remainder of their lives – and at their passing.  You would never escape references to this game, it would follow you without end.

In reaching the final, Newco’s achievement, just 10 years after the liquidation of Oldco, was impressive.  Well done to a manager and squad that surely reached a peak even their dads would never have through possible.  To lose 5-4 on penalties, is especially cruel.  Fans who endured so much and have yet to see their team lift a trophy in person (do we count the Petrofac Cup win over Peterhead?), were denied a lifelong affirmative memory.  They know that was their chance, it will never come again.

The cost of Aaron Ramsey’s penalty miss excluding commercial and broadcast revenues?  €4m additional prize money for the winners and a minimum of €5.2m for participating in the Uefa Super Cup game.  Automatic Champions League qualification would bring in revenue, some of which will displace income from group stage games in either the Europa or Conference Leagues, one of which Newco will qualify for.  This will be in the region of €15m to €20m.

If Newco successfully earn one of the two Champions League non-champion group stage places, the damage is limited to €9.2m, if they fail to reach the CL group stage, the cost will be in the €25m – €30m region.  Aaron should have practised more.

Ramsay’s penalty also saved Celtic from having to share (for the time being) Scotland’s CL TV pool money – so a budget spreadsheet at Celtic Park received an extra £3m last night.  Which is nice.

The £100m losses gambled on getting a Champions League breakthrough almost paid off last night.  But it didn’t, which is how gambling works!

  1. I remember the outpouring of empathy we received in 2003 as Jimmy Calderwood waltzed in to Ipox saying Dunfermline were there for the party, I can remember big Sutton seething at the helping hands administered by the Matchfixers, we held our heads high. GIRFUT

Spot on Paul! Last night’s was no ordinary game, the consequences of a hun victory would have lasted a lifetime. DVDs, 12 page pull-outs, demands for statues, knighthoods and on and on and on…

    Thank you Eintracht

  3. Anybody know when the draw is for the champions league group stages ?

Ach, it’s a rhetorical question… will worry about that later in the summer or if it’s even in the early autumn

  7. We can relax this summer. Those CL qualifiers are a perilous task. Goldson is gone, Kent, Morelos and Aribo on the last year of their contracts means big players need moved on this summer. They’re up against it.

Haha😂🤣😂 great save with the legs😂🤣

  9. I posted a week or so ago that if they won then players would be keen to stay with guaranteed CL group games. It would also have been a pull for new players – that’s certainly gone for the time being.

You have posted several times about your suspicions regarding the physiques of the Rangers players. I wholeheartedly agree with you. I’ve been saying the same to my family and mates for over a year.

When I look at the change in physique of the likes of Tavernier, Goldson, Jack, Kent, Kamara from what they looked like a couple of seasons ago, I find it difficult to believe that the transformation came about solely due to weightlifting and exercise. The rage you often see on McGregor’s face too when a forward comes too close too him when challenging for a ball also makes me wonder. It reminds me of the behaviour of Maradona at the World Cup he was expelled from.

unashamed repost from last thread this morning.

THE LONG WAIT IS OVER on 19TH MAY 2022 7:23 AM

    On their fans.

The numbers seemed lower than expected.

They don’t seem to have caused any trouble (mercifully).

The ones in the stadium seemed unusually subdued.

    Why?

One reason might be that their real hardcore of fans are , it seems, anti vaxx and will not have been allowed into Spain.

  12. NOTTHEBUS on 19TH MAY 2022 12:17 PM

How poor were the fans, before during and after the game

    ____

Hardly heard them during the game and the did little to affect the Eintracht penalty kick takers.

  13. Tony Ralston has scored double the amount of goals that Ryan Kent has this season …..

  14. Ziggy

    The fan participation was terrible.

Nerves / big game fans / corporates / too drunk or dehydrated ? All of the above. Either way they were poor. Totally uninspired by the team though.

  15. TOSB @ 12.31

    Thanks for the response.

I think there might be two elements involved.

    1) Bigger lung capacity / asthma diagnoses / TUEs / stuff like that.

    2) Gym bunny training regime — the size of them / look as if they are wearing a superhero bodysuit.

Too many — sorry most now look like your average full time egg chaser.

Something is in play with a gym based dimension to their training regime.

Again the question about drug testing regimes in football needs to be discussed.

As for AMcG and his swimming in caffeine look — I think that he is an outlier — not sure if he has been on the Calpol / Benylin / Fisherman’s Friends recently.

Late 1970’s drug enhanced performance in football — seemingly big in Italy amongst other places — not all players were given PEDs all the time.

GK’s and forwards were taken off the various programmes — PED’s affected their timing / bit jumpy.

Late 70’s and PEDs were all the rage — even seemingly made it onto the Lions tour in 83.

Back-up player was thought to be taking something and was overlooked for the tests.

    Paid a huge price though.

TFOD2.1 Gym Bunny training regime — out in the open.

They got very lippy about SW — ex sheep — putting 4kg of muscle in 6 weeks last season.

For a guy of his size that is international body building result.

Looking back you have the issue of their wee winger on 2006/08 taking a turn after putting in a huge shift against us to the point he was waving wee SM about like a flag when they both chased a loose ball.

And then there is the tale of Gullane Sands.

  16. GFTB

Very end of August for the CL draw. 3 months away.

    Frankfurt

    Chelsea

    Sporting

    Or similar for me.

  17. Saying on Bears Den,which up until a couple of weeks ago had been renamed”Champions Den”, but that has again been changed to “Jimmy Bells Kitroom”.Bet it smells like it,anyway, saying that the lack of noise was down to the My Gers rip off,and the real hooligans did not get tickets, only the more affluent that put more money in.

Confusing for me,but they know about it,and are raging.

Cheers … it was more for the “visitors” that will be reading :-)

Childish … but makes me smile

Hope all is going well after your recent hospital stuff

Take care and hope you enjoyed this title as much as the many others you’ve witnessed

  19. AP and his mental training regime — the Liz McColgan strategy.

By the looks of some of the players everybody has lost at least half a stone with his high intensity stuff.

For me too much too quickly but hopefully we will reap the benefit next season.

Compare and contrast with the Monsters of the Midway look over in Govan is stark.

  20. An old joke springs to mind for some reason:

What did Mickey Mouse get for Christmas?

    A John Greig watch! 🐭

  21. Splendid viewing on BT Sport last night where wee Rory almost roared himself hoarse, beside Dalek Rae and Alistair Absholuuutley but the clearly hungover horde couldn’t lift their favourites over the line despite some Hugh Dallas refereeing and more bizarre VAR. Celtic paid Hamilton for his pandemic commentaries, what a waste of time and money that was?.

What a kick in the balls, a boot in the head turned out to be and the bloodied Eintracht captain barely recovered despite miraculously staying on the pitch. It had to be a slip for Sevco’s goal, but not decisive tonight Josephine, a victory over 90 minutes was predictably precluded with no rancid return in Govan. Celtic’s new Columbian favourite legend Rafael Santos Borre dinked a wee Larsson, and the tea was masking.

Delicious irony that five penalties to Rainjurz was one too many and Annan Ramsey reduced Tav Pen to tears. They counted them all out (100,000) and we counted them all back in ( 45,000 ) another world record for Sevco.

    MOM Von Trapp

  22. On another note, three ex-Celts (Harper, Morgan, Klimala) scored for NY Red Bulls 3-3 draw with Chicago last night.

  23. Actually

    Frankfurt

    Atalanta

    Sporting

Would seriously give us a punchers chance !

Also PSV or Marseilles will be very tough qualifiers for that lot to negotiate in round 3. Although knowing their luck they will get Galloise or Sturm Graz.

If you look at the side effects of over use of say asthma inhalers can’t remember the drug name.

They include high blood pressure- look back at the mcgregor’s flushed face for the past 2 years- funnily wasn’t there in the heat of Seville……

Also aggressive abnormal behaviour again mcgregor consistently., also moreles for that behaviour, and finally weight gain….moreles all day long.
